About the Presentation
The petroleum processing industry is well equipped and experienced in minimizing risk from major accident events associated with releases of hydrocarbons. CO2 is a different fluid and, when released, behaves differently to a hydrocarbon gas, such as methane.
Like hydrocarbon releases, a CO2 release can affect people caught in the dispersing cloud and may pose fatality risk (depending on CO2 concentrations and exposure durations). Nevertheless, safety risks associated with CO2 projects can be reduced to levels comparable to (or lower than) that of well-designed hydrocarbon facilities by understanding the hazards associated with CO2 and adhering to inherently safer design principles and risk-based approach.
This presentation will look at how CO2 release behaviour is different from hydrocarbon gas behaviour, the hazards CO2 release poses to nearby populations, and potential ways to minimise the risk. The current state of CO2 release modelling tools, and the uncertainties/challenges that exist, will also be discussed, along with ways to overcome them
About the Speaker
Dr Marina Karyagina is a Principal Safety and Risk Engineer from Advisian/Worley. Marina has been working in the area of technical safety and risk on offshore and pipeline projects for more than 20 years. Recently, she has been involved in a project related to CO2 transport via subsea pipeline and offshore re-injection.
