Abstract:

As decommissioning and long-term maintenance of petroleum facilities becomes a more common activity in Australia, operators and tier-1 service providers are having to address and manage NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials) in the residues and wastes more often.

Understanding NORM exists/may exist in your facility is one thing, understanding how to tackle this issue can be another.  Building on the presentation from last August that discussed NORM and the regulatory environment around NORM, this presentation looks at being proactive in the approach to managing NORM in offshore decommissioning, rather than reacting when the NORM is encountered.

This presentation presents some examples of how (and why) a reactive approach has had a deleterious effect on projects, what a proactive/ strategic approach looks like, how this might be implemented offshore and the timelines around a staged approach.  Finally we will discuss the importance of early stakeholder engagement and education when considering NORM.

Anthony is the Managing Director and Technical Lead for Radiation Professionals – a service company providing consulting and site services in radioactive source management.

With a degree in Physics, Anthony began his professional career teaching Applied Physics at Curtin University, went on to work as an instrumentation scientist at the Gemini observatory in Chile and later started a company providing research and development in instrumentation, targeted at both the medical and resources industries.

Radiation Professionals was then created to address an identified gap in the provision of professional services to the mining and petroleum industries, specifically with respect to radiation safety and management.

Anthony, as the Technical Lead in Radiation Professionals, has gone on to develop management and training systems for discrete sources and more topically, for the monitoring, management and ultimate disposal of NORM.  Working with industry and governments alike, Radiation Professionals implement and deliver NORM management approaches in the exploration, mining and petroleum arena.
