SPE WA is pleased to announce the third SPE WA Facilities Group Technical Event for 2021, ‘Harnessing rigs and innovation to reduce Field Development & Decommissioning Costs,” lead by Darren O’Leary, GM Field Development, from ICON Engineering.
About the Presentation
A perfect storm of low oil & gas prices, plus decommissioning and decarbonisation pressures, is forcing our industry to identify and adopt a wide range of innovative lower cost Field Development and Decommissioning solutions. One of these is to extend the utility of Drilling Rigs already mobilised to drill and P&A offshore wells.
The utilisation of the full capability of offshore Drilling Rigs beyond development drilling and P&A, including facilities installation and removal, often allows operators to eliminate cranes barges/subsea construction vessel entirely.
Installation of Wellhead Platforms with the Jack-Up Rigs already mobilised to drill the wells is a proven method of delivering significant cost savings. The same advantages occur in decommissioning. In deeper water, the Installation of subsea facilities, including flowlines with the Semi-sub drill rig, has also proven to deliver significant cost savings and possibilities existing in decommissioning in parallel with well P&A.
The word “innovation” is derived from the Latin verb “innovare” to introduce something new. In our industry, this is a difficult process. Using a rig instead of traditional installation vessels requires a change in mindset. One of the keys is to have very early collaboration between an Operator’s Drilling and Project Facilities Departments.
This presentation will outline the evolution of this approach, lessons from ICON’s journey and the continuous pursuit of identifying, developing & implementing future innovations that will lower Development & Decommissioning costs.
About the Speaker – Darren O’Leary
Darren O’Leary is GM Field Development with ICON Engineering. He graduated in 1990 with a BEng and 2013 with an MBA from the University of Western Australia.
Darren has over 30 years of experience in the oil & gas business. Developing and delivering offshore and subsea projects. He has extensive knowledge of engineering, construction, installation and decommissioning. He has worked in technical and management roles, for operators and contractors, across a wide range of project and offshore locations, including Australia, NZ, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, PNG, China, India, Qatar, USA, Brazil, Nigeria, UK, and Norway.
