Smart Geo-structure Interaction and System Modelling of Subsea Facilities

Abstract:

The system performance of subsea facilities is highly affected by its interaction with the seabed. By better understanding the system and identification of the key drivers in the design process, the performance can be optimized and in turn lead to better and more cost-effective foundation solutions. This presentation outlines the geotechnical interaction with subsea systems and how uncertainty in soil properties and modelling of the system response influences outcomes. For the cases of subsea structure foundations and on-seabed pipelines, the presentation outlines how (i) modelling of the geo-structure interaction, and (ii) the use of probabilistic methods to assess uncertainty can lead to optimal outcomes and better-informed decisions. Examples of smart foundation solutions for better system performance are also given.

Bio:

Øyvind Torgersrud has been working with the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) for 6 years, currently employed at the Perth office in Australia. He graduated from the aNorwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in 2010 with a M.Sc in Structural Engineering supplemented with subjects in geotechnical engineering and soil structure interaction (SSI). He works on both consulting and research projects on geotechnical design, complex finite element analyses (FEA), SSI and geotechnical earthquake engineering, both for offshore and onshore projects, located in Norway, Australia and South East Asia.
