SPE WA March ’18 Technical Luncheon – Drilling fluid research

Look no further as SPE WA presents an opportunity to learn about the latest academic research into drilling fluid systems!
Drilling fluids have critical roles in the success of drilling operation, and drilling fluid rheology is critical for hole cleaning and fluid loss control. In the Drilling Mechanics Group of Curtin University, a preventative (CTrolTM) and a remedial (CTrolXTM) drilling fluid system have been developed for the new emerging RoXplorer® drilling technology established in Deep Exploration Technology CRC.
In this presentation, we show the results of rheological studies performed to formulate CTrolTM and CTrolXTM using the synergies between various drilling fluid additives. The results of field trials of these systems as a part of RoXplorer® rig deployment in South Australia and Victoria will be presented.
Speaker – Dr Masood Mostofi (Curtin University)
Dr Masood Mostofi is a researcher at Curtin University, and the leader of the Drilling Mechanics Group.
Dr Mostofi has Bachelor, Masters and PhD in Drilling engineering, and has been working in various drilling research projects for the last decade. He supervises a research team consisting of researchers, PhD, Master and Undergraduate students conducting research on different aspects of drilling and drilling fluid using a state of the art lab facility.
His research interest is applied research in drilling with a particular focus on drilling performance optimisation via the design and selection of tools, the implementation of best drilling practices and real-time drilling data interpretation and automation.
