SPE Annual General Meeting and Technical Luncheon – What’s ‘bugging’ your production?

Abstract:

Microorganisms play a very important, often unseen, role in the oilfield. They exist in almost any environment imaginable, from potable drinking water to produced water, reservoir to refinery. The presence of microorganisms can be both positive and negative, however, the focus is almost exclusively on the negative impact microorganisms play in the oilfield and the associated costs. This presentation will introduce the audience to microorganisms, the environments they exist in, the impacts they have and the mitigation strategies available to control them in the oilfield.

Presenter: Douglas Bennet

Douglas Bennet is the Manager of Microbiology in South East Asia for Intertek. With a degree in Environmental Biology from the University of Aberdeen and over 10 years’ experience in oilfield microbiology, primarily focusing on field work and consultancy projects across several regions including; Australia, New Zealand, UK Continental Shelf North Sea, North Africa, Middle-East, USA and Asia. Douglas is based in the Intertek Exploration and Production Centre of Excellence in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He actively participates in events for the Society of Petroleum Engineers and NACE, and has presented several papers including recent publications at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) 2016 and NACE East Asia and Pacific Area Conference 2016.
