SPE WA YP Presents – Personal Branding and Team Dynamic Workshop

November 26, 2015 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

$25.00 – $35.00

SPE WA YP Presents – Personal Branding and Team Dynamic Workshop

As a young professional, it is easy to focus our attention on the technical aspects of our jobs and roles. However, something that is not always properly nurtured is the non-technical aspect. We will often find ourselves working within multi-disciplinary teams or handling multiple stakeholders and their varied expectations. Technical skills may get your foot in the door but your work ethic, attitude, communications skills and emotional intelligence are what will open most of the doors to come. The Society of Petroleum Engineers Young Professionals are pleased to present the inaugural Soft Skills Workshop, which will provide you with the necessary tools to develop and maximise the impact of your own soft skills now and throughout your career. The event will consist of two key presentations by Kylie Van Der Sar, Senior Commercial Manager for Shell Australia Pty Ltd and Arvind Chetty, Business Development Director for the Asia Pacific Region for SPIE Oil and Gas Services and will conclude with a sundowner with food and beverages provided.

Speaker and topics

Speaker 1 – Kylie Van Der Sar – Personal Branding

It was a somewhat strange fascination with large, industrial machinery and non-Newtonian fluids that pulled Kylie into studying engineering to begin with. After completing degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Commerce, Kylie started as a Project Engineer at Shell’s Newport Terminal outside of Melbourne. The next ten years saw Kylie move to the Netherlands, specialising as a Process Engineer and working offshore in the North Sea as well designing facilities for oil and gas projects from Nigeria to Russia. In 2006, Kylie undertook an MBA at the IMD Business School in Lausanne, Switzerland which was the catalyst for a change in career direction. Kylie currently works as a Senior Commercial Manager developing, negotiating and operationalising asset commercial agreements that contribute to the development and implementation of Shell’s strategy in Australia and the region. The role allows Kylie to utilize the diverse range of skills that she’s built up over her career and importantly to her also allows her to spend significant time investing in and developing others in her teams. Besides her commercial work, Kylie is also an active member and role model in the Shell Women’s Network  and has led mentoring circles within Shell for women and graduates. On the home front, she’s married and is the mother of two active young boys, aged 7 and 9. Balancing work and life is an important aspect of her life and she does this with a firm belief that nothing is more important than family.

Speaker 2 – Arvind Chetty – Why Some Teams Just Seem To Work

With an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Arvind started in the energy industry in 1982 working for SCANA Corporation in the USA as a Powerplant Engineer. In 1984 he joined Schlumberger as a Wireline Engineer with a career spread over 14 years in China, Dubai, India, Indonesia and Australia in various technical roles.  He switched to a Business Development role in 1998 with Varco followed in 2003 by Upstream Petroleum and AGR Field Operations as Global VP – Sales and Marketing. From December 2011 to April 2014 he led the Business Development effort in the Asia Pacific region across all Oceaneering product lines. Since May 2014, he has been charged with growing the Asset Management, Competency Development, Asset Integrity, Engineering and Expertise business lines of SPIE Oil and Gas Services in the region including their wholly owned subsidiary, SPIE Plexal.

Arvind is involved in the oil and gas community as Vice-Chairman of Subsea Energy Australia and the Mentoring Chair of the SPE-WA. He has mentored both graduates and students in different engineering disciplines while also supporting EWB with their annual workshops. Arvind is an MBTI certified trainer and conducts Leadership and High Performance Team workshops.
