SUMMARY:APAC Gaia Talk India’s Renewable Energy Journey: Policy Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:SPE APAC Gaia Talk – India’s Renewable Energy Journey: Policy Perspectives\nThis is an online  SPE Gaia Talk:  The link to register for free is here:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_10PLxZACQEel-Unr8D6klA\n\n\nThe Talk\nIndia has made remarkable progress in renewable energy (RE) development\, emerging as a global leader. The country now ranks fourth worldwide in overall installed renewable capacity\, third in solar\, and fourth in wind power. \nThe rapid expansion of RE capacity began around 2014\, marking a major shift in India’s energy landscape. Since then\, the nation has tripled its installed renewable capacity\, driven by ambitious targets\, policy reforms\, and strong private sector participation. Early growth was supported by direct subsidies\, but subsequent progress has relied on market-enabling measures such as demand aggregation\, payment security mechanisms\, and waivers of inter-state transmission charges. These initiatives reduced risks\, improved project bankability\, and attracted large-scale domestic and foreign investment. \nIndia’s long-term vision is clear: to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity by 2030\, in line with its commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2070. With about 236 GW of non-fossil capacity already in place\, India has made significant strides. Yet\, doubling this capacity within the next few years presents major challenges—particularly in land acquisition\, environmental sustainability\, and transmission infrastructure. Developing modern grids\, energy storage\, and flexible generation will be critical to integrating variable renewable energy while maintaining system reliability. \nAttention is now turning to new frontiers of clean energy. The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to position India as a global hub for producing and exporting green hydrogen\, helping decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like steel and fertilisers. Similarly\, offshore wind is being prioritized\, with Gujarat and Tamil Nadu identified as key development zones. These emerging technologies are expected to complement solar and onshore wind\, deepening India’s low-carbon transition. \nThis Gaia talk will review India’s renewable energy journey\, highlighting the policy frameworks that enabled its growth and the strategies needed for the next phase. It will explore lessons from India’s experience and outline policy priorities—including innovation\, investment\, and coordination—to ensure continued progress toward a clean\, resilient\, and inclusive energy future \nThe Presenter\nMr Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi was a civil servant in India for more than thirty-five years before his retirement in October 2022. During his lengthy career he held positions in a diverse range of areas. His work in the erstwhile Planning Commission from 2004 to 2008\, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) from 2008 to 2014\, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at Washington DC from 2014 to 2017 inter-alia pertained to design and implementation of economic policies. \n

SUMMARY:Degradation and lifetime prediction of polymers in subsea and offshore infrastructures
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA GAIA and Facility Seminar\n  \nSPE WA GAIA and SPE WA Facilities are jointly hosting a seminar at the new Pulse Technology Hub on the 19th August\, 5.30pm start. \nThe Talk\nOffshore infrastructure depends heavily on synthetic polymers and plastics due to their durability and resistance to corrosion and other environmental stimuli. However\, their degradation in deep marine environments remains poorly understood\, making lifespan predictions uncertain. This talk will focus on pertinent literature on the degradation of plastics and synthetic polymers in marine environments to gain insight into the fate of these materials when left in subsea conditions. We will discuss the important depth-dependent physicochemical parameters and how to account for them in predicting the lifespan of synthetic plastics and the possible formation of plastic debris. \nAs subsea infrastructures reach the end of their service life\, managing the plastic components becomes crucial for environmental and regulatory stakeholders. Therefore\, through a case study\, we will highlight the disconnect between lab tests\, models\, and real-world performance\, concluding with a forward-looking strategy to enhance service life and improve degradation predictions. \nThe Speaker\nDr Ibukun Oluwoye is a Research Fellow at the Curtin University Corrosion Centre and has a passion for solving real-world challenges in materials science and environmental sustainability. His research explores what happens to polymers and composites in harsh subsea environments\, helping industries make smarter decisions about offshore decommissioning. Ibukun has also developed recycling pathways and innovative approaches to reduce environmental impacts from legacy infrastructure. During a fellowship in Japan\, he worked on tackling plastic pollution by creating affordable membrane technologies for microplastic removal in water systems. He’s driven by the idea of blending science and practical solutions to create a more sustainable future.  He has a PhD in Engineering from Murdoch University

SUMMARY:Corrosion in CCS: Lessons Learned and the Road Ahead
DESCRIPTION:  \nPresentation: Corrosion in CCS: Lessons Learned and the Road Ahead\nCarbon Capture and Storage (CCS) plays a vital role in the global effort to reduce CO₂ emissions. While pure\, dry CO₂ is generally non-corrosive\, real-world CO₂ streams often contain impurities that can significantly accelerate corrosion and jeopardize the integrity of transport and storage infrastructure. This seminar will explore current knowledge surrounding corrosion and material degradation in CCS systems. Despite growing research in this area\, several critical gaps remain—particularly inconsistencies in reported findings\, limitations in experimental setups\, and uncertainties about long-term performance—which undermine the reliability of predictions and system design. To address these challenges\, this seminar will present a research initiative focused on investigating the in-situ chemical interactions of impurities in CO₂ streams and their impact across the CCS value chain. \nPresenter: Professor Thunyaluk (Kod) Pojtanabuntoeng\nProfessor Thunyaluk (Kod) Pojtanabuntoeng is the Woodside and Chevron Chair in Materials and Corrosion Engineering at Curtin University. She holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Ohio University and an MSc in Petroleum Technology from Chulalongkorn University. Her research focuses on corrosion in oil and gas systems\, including CO2 corrosion\, Top-of-the-Line corrosion (TLC)\, and corrosion under insulation (CUI). Since joining Curtin in 2012\, she has led industry-funded projects addressing practical corrosion challenges and is an active member of the Australasian Corrosion Association. She advocates for collaboration between academia and industry in corrosion science and engineering. \n

DESCRIPTION:Important Notice: Due to a scheduling conflict\, the event date has been rescheduled from October 2nd to October 28th. If you are unable to attend on the new date\, please reach out to Dean Finlayson for a refund. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.\n  \nSpeaker (SLB):  Gaojing (Melody) Cao\nGaojing (Melody) Cao is the Head of Product Asset Performance Management and Digital Twin and was the surface facilities technical authority with SLB in London. She has 25 years of leadership experience in delivering large-scale\, onshore\, and offshore oil and gas projects and petrochemical projects. \nShe has managed projects through all phases from concept development to start-up. She has also managed assets in the operations & maintenance phase including major turnaround management. \nShe holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Xi’an Jiao Tong University\, an MBA degree from Manchester Business School\, and a PMP credential from Project Management Institute. \nPresentation -The Forgotten Member in Early Field Development Planning\nThe field development and asset management life cycle comprises 7 stages: explore\, appraise\, select\, define\, execute\, operate\, and abandon. Frequently companies prioritize reserve or resource-related subsurface activities such as seismic\, volumetrics\, and reservoir engineering\, but put little thought into surface facilities at the early stage of the field development life cycle. Subsequently\, the surface facilities become the bottleneck or even a showstopper to unlocking the full potential of the reservoir and realization of the optimal value of the asset. \nThis presentation focuses on the critical role surface facilities play in field development and asset management. It covers the major surface facility activities involved in field development\, the complexity of these activities\, and how surface facilities impact the whole asset value realization. Examples demonstrate the consequences when facilities are overlooked. Finally\, it discusses developments in building sustainable facilities in the oil and gas industry. \n \nSpeaker (Kongsberg Digital):  Siddharth SETIA  \nAs General Manager  APAC – Digital Energy\, Sid leads Business Growth and Strategy in APAC prioritizing on Australia\, New-Zealand\, India & Japan. Sid joined Kongsberg Digital earlier this year after having spent 15+ years with fortune 500 Japanese Trading conglomerate Sumitomo\, where he led a variety of roles in Supply Chain\, Field  Operations\, Strategic Account Head  and Digital Transformation along with regional BD Advisor for new technology investments division. Sid is a Mechanical Engineer Graduate (India) with a Post-Grad in Petroleum Engineering from Curtin University\, Australia. \nPresentation -Digital Asset & Physical Twin: A Dialog on Digitally Born Future Fit Asset\nWhat if you’re tasked to build a Facility of Future?\, that is truly future proof. What does it really mean? \n\nInstalling any and every IT\, OT\, Tech tool available to Ops mankind?\n\nOr \n\nDesigning a facility on tech enabled framework that can adopt OT/IT infra dynamically? to meet?\n\nWhat path genuinely delivers operational excellence along with sustainable long-term value? \nIn the context of constructing assets in remote locations\, such as LNG facilities\, managing operations with limited personnel and high logistical costs presents substantial technical challenges. The geographical isolation and associated expenses necessitate rigorous efficiency in workflows and effective shift transitions. Employing a digital twin—a virtual replica of the physical asset—offers a sophisticated solution to these challenges\, particularly during the project phase. \nA digital twin integrates real-time data and advanced simulation capabilities to address common pain points experienced by operators and EPC (Engineering\, Procurement\, and Construction) contractors. These issues often include costly design modifications\, data integrity problems\, safety risks\, quality control inconsistencies\, budget overruns\, and suboptimal resource allocation. \nThe implementation of a digital twin provides several technical benefits: \n\nOptimized Facility Design: Facilitates a ‘digital by design’ paradigm\, incorporating analytics-driven design to minimize instrumentation\, model corrosion\, and embed performance architecture. This reduces CAPEX and OPEX\, ensuring operational efficiency and adaptability from the design phase.\nEnhanced Data Access: Delivers a centralized\, cloud-based data repository for real-time monitoring and management. This enables high-resolution data quality control\, accurate contextualization\, and seamless updates throughout the project lifecycle.\nAdvanced Safety Management: Utilizes simulation capabilities to model construction processes\, assess risk scenarios\, and optimize safety protocols. This includes virtual testing of start-up logic and equipment performance\, as well as emissions estimation and reporting.\nCost Efficiency: Enables remote operations and virtual site inspections\, reducing the need for physical site presence and thereby cutting associated costs. The digital environment supports remote training and site orientation\, expediting project timelines.\nImproved Resource Allocation: Provides a platform for enhanced coordination and tracking of construction activities and resource utilization\, ensuring optimal alignment between on-site and remote teams.\nRefined Quality Control: Leverages machine learning and artificial intelligence to transition from reactive to predictive maintenance\, facilitating automated quality control and reducing rework costs.\n\nAdopting a digital twin approach enhances decision-making\, risk mitigation\, and project execution\, thereby significantly improving asset performance and sustainability throughout its lifecycle. This technical approach fosters a culture of innovation and efficiency\, setting a new standard for asset management in remote and challenging environments. \n  \nImportant Notice: Due to a scheduling conflict\, the event date has been rescheduled from October 2nd to October 28th. If you are unable to attend on the new date\, please reach out to Dean Finlayson for a refund. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. \n  \nOnline Teams Meeting Link:\nJoin the meeting online here on 28th of October 2024 from 16:45 hours (AWST)

SUMMARY:Revamping Gas Facilities for a Greener Future: Transforming Brownfields into CCS Hubs – The Kent Way
DESCRIPTION:Brownfield modifications to convert existing gas production facilities for CCS operations \nSpeaker: \nChristopher Jones has 13 years of experience in process engineering and currently is a Principal Process Engineer at Kent PLC. He underwent an accelerated Honours (First Class) program at university in chemical engineering and completed an internship in Germany. Chris has been exposed to a wide breadth of industry projects allowing him to apply unique design approaches when tackling challenges in traditional oil and gas and emerging new energy industries. \n  \nAbstract: \nIn recent years\, traditional oil and gas operators have found novel means of extending the life of their assets and deferring onerous decommissioning costs by converting their facilities from gas production into carbon dioxide (CO2) injection. While the task of designing for CO2 may sound simple\, CO2 injection works in counter-intuitive ways\, with previously established heuristics derived from years of experience in gas condensate systems being quickly challenged as potentially dangerous. The world of designing CO2 systems is back-to-front compared with hydrocarbons; it isn’t simply a case of a change in flow direction. \nSome of the design challenges explored in this presentation include: large density variability in CO2 systems where a small change in the ambient temperature can significantly impact the pressure of a shut-in system; optimal pressure ratings of the vents and drains systems and how previous safety margins may be unsafe; pipeline hydraulic modelling focussed on new areas outside of the traditional suite of analysis\, such as assurance of the supercritical phase; understanding liquid water dropout; and what to modify in an existing gas-condensate production system. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Repurposing networks for Hydrogen
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nThis presentation is an overview for repurposing and the potential blockers with respect to current code compliance based on Wood case studies of international code requirements and recent repurposing study work.  \nBased on rudimental calculations\, comparing both energy Natural Gas (NG) and H2 carriers\, repurposed pipelines can be capable of achieving circa 80-90% of the energy flow rate if design pressure can be maintained\, or 50-60% if the design pressure is de-rated. If other operational restrictions are considered\, such as flow velocity it can potentially have additional knock-on effect on the achievable flowrate and consequently to energy ratio.  \nThe feasibility of pipeline repurposing for hydrogen service is critical to the energy transition. Careful consideration of code requirements\, and further research and development currently ongoing is required in order to remove over-conservatisms in design to maximise the achievable energy flow rate when repurposing to hydrogen service. \nPresented by\n\nCallum Peace\nCallum is a chartered engineer working 15+ years in onshore and offshore from concept to detailed design\, procurement and installation. He has executed numerous H2\, H2 Blending and H2 vector studies. Additionally\, Callum leads Wood’s H2/CCUS pipeline R&D team. \n  \nAbout the Event\n\nPrice: \n\nSPE Member $10\nNon-Member $15\n\nBring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nAdd your friend’s name to the field “Additional Guest Name” on the checkout page. \nDate:             Wednesday 9th of August 2023 \nLocation:      Flux Basement\, 191 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime: \n\n4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration and Networking\n5:00 pm – 5:45 pm Presentation and Q&A Session\n5:45 pm – 6:45 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles

SUMMARY:Solving the challenges of oil-free high-pressure hydrogen compression
DESCRIPTION:Hydrogen compressors are used for transport and storage of hydrogen for various applications\, including power to X\, feedstock for ammonia synthesis\, and nowadays mobility. In the context of mobility\, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) require compressed hydrogen to power their fuel cells and generate electricity to drive the vehicle’s electric motor. \nHydrogen supply for FCV’s is stored at high pressure at fueling stations\, typically around 550 bar (8\,000 psi)\, before dispensing it into the FCV’s on-board fuel tank. \nThis represents a big technical challenge\, in terms of compression\, since high pressure H2 used for fuel cells must be absolutely oil-free\, so compressors need to be able to reach very high pressures\, for a very light gas\, without using any lubricating fluid. \nSIAD Macchine Impianti exploited its long experience in hydrogen compression\, in order to develop innovative solutions to reliably face such a challenge. \n  \nAbout the Speakers\nClaudio Sangaletti is serving as Business Director of ASU and LNG units at SIAD Macchine Impianti S.p.A. with more than twenty years of experience in the field of contracting\, design and construction of cryogenic plants. He is also General Manager of SIAD Engineering (Hangzhou) Co.\, Ltd and SIAD Engineering Trading (Shanghai) Co.\, Ltd. Claudio uses his skills and experience to ensure the continuous growing and success of the ASU and LNG division worldwide. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering\, with a specialization in Automation and Robotic Science from Politecnico of Milan. He holds a Master in Contracting\, Engineering and Management of Mega Projects from School of Business of Politecnico of Milan. \nGianluigi De Mitri graduated with a M.Sc. in Management Engineering from the University of Bergamo\, Italy. He then studied Lean Startup and Business Model Innovation at the Berlin School of Economics and Law\, Germany. Gianluigi joined SIAD Macchine Impianti in 2015\, where he manages strategic marketing and business development initiatives on a global scale\, especially within the decarbonisation technologies and hydrogen economy industry. \nAbout the Event\nPrice: \n\nSPE Member $10\nNon-Member $15\n\nBring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nAdd your friend’s name to the field “Additional Guest Name” on the checkout page. \nDate:              Wednesday\, 22nd of February 2023 \nLocation:      Flux Basement\, 191 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime: \n4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration and Networking\n5:00 pm – 5:45 pm Presentation and Q&A Session\n5:45 pm – 6:45 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles

We might not even get halfway. We must radically rethink the way we design\, build\, and work together. \n“From Ambition to Reality 2: Measuring change in the race to net zero” is the next instalment of Worley and Princeton University’s Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment’s ground-breaking series. Our first paper showed that achieving net zero is technically feasible\, but there’s an immense infrastructure delivery challenge to get there.  This paper builds on the five key shifts in infrastructure delivery and explores how to convert this thinking into action in the critical period through to 2030.  It outlines 15 leading indicators of change that will enable industry and governments to evaluate\, adjust\, and correct infrastructure delivery practices to meet the challenge of scale and speed that mid-century net zero demands.  We also discuss the initial results of the Net Zero Australia project being undertaken by the University of Queensland and Melbourne. \nSo how do we untangle the threads of the net-zero transition to weave a new delivery paradigm? Explore how a framework for measurement against the paradigm shifts is required for accelerated delivery. \nhttps://www.worley.com/our-thinking/from-ambition-to-reality \n  \nAbout the Presenter\nClare Anderson is the Director of Sustainability Performance for Worley and is passionate about the decarbonisation of the energy\, chemical and resources industries. She stewards Worley to meet the commitments made in our Climate Change Position Statement\, embedding sustainability in the way we operate our business and deliver services to our customers. \nClare has a PhD in Chemical Engineering\, specifically relating to the adaptation of low carbon technologies. She has over two decades of project and engineering management experience and is an experienced leader of large technical teams. Her experience spans all phases of project development from concept development through to detailed design\, construction\, and operation. She also has considerable experience working in Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs). \nClare has delivered major energy infrastructure projects in Europe\, South Africa\, and Australia. SUMMARY:Designing Safe Carbon Capture Usage & Storage (CCUS) Facilities
DESCRIPTION:SPE Western Australia is pleased to present Dr Marina Karyagina\, Principal Safety and Risk Engineer at Advisian\, for the June Facilities Group Technical Evening. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe petroleum processing industry is well equipped and experienced in minimizing risk from major accident events associated with releases of hydrocarbons. CO2 is a different fluid and\, when released\, behaves differently to a hydrocarbon gas\, such as methane. \nLike hydrocarbon releases\, a CO2 release can affect people caught in the dispersing cloud and may pose fatality risk (depending on CO2 concentrations and exposure durations).  Nevertheless\, safety risks associated with CO2 projects can be reduced to levels comparable to (or lower than) that of well-designed hydrocarbon facilities by understanding the hazards associated with CO2 and adhering to inherently safer design principles and risk-based approach. \nThis presentation will look at how CO2 release behaviour is different from hydrocarbon gas behaviour\, the hazards CO2 release poses to nearby populations\, and potential ways to minimise the risk. The current state of CO2 release modelling tools\, and the uncertainties/challenges that exist\, will also be discussed\, along with ways to overcome them \n\nAbout the Speaker \nDr Marina Karyagina is a Principal Safety and Risk Engineer from Advisian/Worley. Marina has been working in the area of technical safety and risk on offshore and pipeline projects for more than 20 years. Recently\, she has been involved in a project related to CO2 transport via subsea pipeline and offshore re-injection. \n\nAbout the Event\nPrice:             SPE Member $10\nPrice:             Non-Member $15\nPrice:             Bring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nPrice:             Add your friend’s name to the field “Attendee Names” on the checkout page. \nDate:              Tuesday\, 14th of June 2022 \nLocation:      Riff Spacecubed\nLocation:      45 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime:              5:00 pm – 5:15pm SPE WA Opening\nTime:              5:15 pm – 6:00 pm Presentation\nTime:              6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles \nAs per government requirements\, proof of at minimum double vaccination is required to enter the venue.

SUMMARY:Hydrogen - The Hype and The Reality
DESCRIPTION:SPE Western Australia is pleased to announce the May Facilities Group Event led by Martin Wilkes\, Managing Director at RISC. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nWith the number of “hy” profile announcements over the past year or so\, you could be forgiven for thinking that the hydrogen economy is just around the corner and ready to go. However\, as many R&D teams know the pathway to commercialisation traverses the technology “valley of death”\, which is littered with the skeletons of failed enterprises. Whilst hydrogen clearly has the significant advantage of not releasing CO2 when combusted there are many other factors that need to be addressed before the hydrogen economy becomes a reality. \nThis talk will discuss the current status of hydrogen\, look at the pathways to a hydrogen economy and discuss what the impacts might be. \n\nAbout the Speaker \nMartin Wilkes is the Managing Director of RISC\, an independent international energy advisory company headquartered in Perth\, Western Australia. \nMartin is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Environmentalist. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and a Member of the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN). He has a Master of Engineering Degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK \nMartin has worked in the energy industry for over 30 years\, holding a range of international positions including project development\, business leadership and planning\, corporate governance\, and technical training. Since joining RISC in 2010 he has provided advice to clients on hundreds of projects\, including over 30% of the world’s LNG projects\, and several multi-billion-dollar transactions. \n\nAbout the Event\nPrice:             SPE Member $10\nPrice:             Non-Member $15\nPrice:             Bring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nPrice:             Add your friend’s name to the field “Attendee Names” on the checkout page. \nDate:              Tuesday\, 10th of May 2022 \nLocation:      Base @FLUX\nLocation:      191 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime:              4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration and Networking\nTime:              5:00 pm – 5:45 pm Presentation and Q&A Session\nTime:              5:45 pm – 6:45 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles \nAs per government requirements\, proof of at minimum double vaccination is required to enter the venue.

SUMMARY:AINDT & SPE Joint Technical Evening - To breach or not to breach? That is the question we address with FEA and advanced inspection!
DESCRIPTION:Advances in inspection and analysis software are making it more practical to proceed directly to Level 3 fitness for service to gain an in-depth knowledge of a damaged item’s integrity. \nContinuous operation of pressure piping and vessels is synonymous with increased productivity. Live pressure equipment also presents a significant\, yet manageable\, hazard to personnel. Plant design and material selection aims to minimise degradation of in-service pressure equipment\, however\, damage is inevitable in many cases. Hence there is a strong requirement to justify safe operation of damaged equipment; this is formally known as fitness for service (FFS) assessment. When damage is identified it is crucial to demonstrate not only whether the item is safe to operate but how much further degradation can be tolerated and what this means for the future of the asset. \n About Tyron Kimble\, he is an integrity engineer with Sonomatic based in Perth. Since joining Sonomatic in 2008\, Tyron has gained experience in non-intrusive inspection (NII) planning and evaluation\, statistical analysis of inspection data and integrity assessment. Field experience with NII has helped Tyron to work closely with inspection and integrity activities.

SUMMARY:Joint AINDT & SPE Facilities Group Technical Evening - Modular Robotic Technologies for Adaptive Inspection Solutions by Jeff Christopherson
DESCRIPTION:Oil and Gas assets managers are under continuous pressure to maintain a safe and profitable infrastructure in the face of ageing assets\, reduced budgets and increased safety demands. NDT technologies provide data to inform decision makers on how best to achieve their goals and further\, these technologies hold the potential to provide intelligence from areas that were never before assessable – if you could just GET them there…. but getting a new technology to the target area can present a challenge for robotics integrators. \n  \nInuktun’s Multi Mission Modular (IM3™) technology lends itself well to the challenge of deploying NDT systems into previously inaccessible\, confined or hazardous spaces. This presentation will review several case studies where robotic solutions were developed to deploy NDT technologies into these forbidding areas\, and touch upon future developments to take data collection even further. \nBy: Jeff Christopherson is Technical Sales Manager at Inuktun Services Ltd\, Nanaimo B.C. Canada. Jeff’s experience as an engineer in the film and television industry has given him an extensive knowledge of electronic\, mechanical and optical systems. This knowledge allows Jeff to fulfil his role as technical liaison between Inuktun and its clients. During his 5+years in this role\, he has been involved in the analysis of many unique customer requirements\, and in the determination of an Inuktun solution to satisfy those requirements.

SUMMARY:Facilities Group - Technical Event! - Blockchain\, Worth the Hype.
DESCRIPTION:Blockchain\, Worth the Hype. Presented by Rowan Fenn\, from Rise-X.IO \nAbout the Presentation: A blockchain provides an immutable record of transactions performed across a network without the need to rely on an intermediary. While this seems a fairly benign function\, blockchain technologies have the potential to fundamentally change the structure of the industry\, impacting traditional value chains and the complex supply chains that serve them. \nThe transactional capabilities of this group of technologies enables the coordination of loosely coupled assets\, companies and individuals in order to achieve collective goals. Effective industrial blockchains enable industry and cross industry collaboration\, resource sharing and optimization and ultimately\, industrial and supply chain automation. Productivity is the ultimate beneficiary. \nIn this session\, Rowan will provide an overview of this group of technologies\, share why he believes the hype is worth the hype\, and discuss how blockchain technology may feasibly be applied to oil and gas industry. \nAbout Rowan: Rowan Fenn is a scientist by vocation and by nature. He found curiosity to be a cure for his boredom\, but alas found no cure for his curiosity. Rowan has a keen interest in knowing and the possible both of which feed his curiosity. He is the co-founder of rise-x.io\, an industrial blockchain company developing a digital marketplace for industrial products and services. \nPrior to founding rise-x.io\, Rowan spent 10 years working with Accenture in their Energy Strategy practice. He focused on the upstream oil and gas industry where he had the privilege of working with some of the world’s largest and most admired energy companies across the hydrocarbon value chain and the asset lifecycle\, and with many different people and cultures in locations across the globe. \nOriginally from South Africa\, Rowan lives in Perth with his Wife and two (Australian) sons. He holds a B.Sc in Biochemistry and Microbiology\, a Postgraduate degree in Biotechnology\, and is a CIMA certified business accountant (Cert BA).

SUMMARY:Technical Evening - Challenges in Handling Increased Water Production in Matured Gas Condensate Facilities
DESCRIPTION:Challenges in Handling Increased Water Production in Matured Gas Condensate Facilities By Wally Georgie From Maxoil Solutions \nIt is often the case when developing gas condensate fields\, the facilities to separate and treat produced water are not fully considered in the design.  This is due to the fact that most gas condensate fields will not produce formation water until later on in the production life; condensed water will be produced throughout the production life but is at low ratio in relation to the gas production rate.  In subsea production systems where hydrate control is required continuously\, most of the condensed water is handled together with the recovery and regeneration of the hydrate inhibitor such as MEG.  In some cases\, LDHI or methanol is used instead and can provide additional challenges with the Produced Water treatment. \nIf the necessary produced water separation and treatment system is not fully developed in the initial design of the process\, handling the water can be very challenging due to lack of suitable treatment facilities as well as the difficulties in treating it in conventional PW handling facilities. Produced water treatment requirements in gas condensate facilities is different from produced water in crude oil systems.  The produced water treatment should take into account the configuration and design of the separation train of the system as it will have a major impact on the selection of the downstream facilities. \nDifferences in produced water can include low salinity\, tight/secondary emulsions\, small condensate droplets\, chemical used\, high pressure drop\, low temperatures etc.  Due to these challenges common technologies may not be effective in handling PW in gas condensate systems. \nThis presentation will address the different handling issues and the optimum approach in treating the produced water in gas condensate production facilities. \nWally has worked for over 37 years in different areas of oil and gas production facilities\, including corrosion control\, flow assurance\, fluid separation\, separator design\, gas handling and produced water both onshore and offshore.  He started his career in oil and gas services sector in 1978 based in the UK and working globally with different production issues then joined Statoil as senior staff engineer and later as technical advisor in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea till 1999. Working as part of operation team on oil and gas production facilities key focus areas included optimization\, operation trouble-shooting\, de-bottlenecking\, oil water separation\, slug handling\, process verification\, internal corrosion control\, chemical management and flow assurance and myriad other fluid and gas handling issues. He then started working in March 1999 as a consultant globally both offshore and onshore in conventional and unconventional oil and gas operation matters

SUMMARY:OGFG - Oil & Gas Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) - Comparison of Australian and Other First World Oil & Gas Industry Practices
DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines the post-treatment management of Oil & Gas NORM (predominantly Radium-26 & Radium-228 in oil producing facilities and Pb-210 in gas producing facilities) within Australia compared with other mature jurisdictions with radioactive and nuclear material handling industries. \nOil and gas radioactive waste storage in Australia is not subject to any prescriptive restrictions with regard to timeliness of disposal and as such managed on a case by case basis\, normally underpinned by the expectation that a solution will present itself in the near future. Currently\, there is no commercially or Government run intractable waste disposal facility available to industries across all state\, territory and Commonwealth jurisdictions within Australia. \nThis combination has led to the on-going ‘temporary’ storage of radioactive material pending an inexpensive\, easy and local disposal solution\, akin to that for non-hazardous waste stream. Firm plans for this type of facility are yet to appear and are not forecast for the near future. \nWhile not specifically prohibited in Australia\, ‘speculative accumulation’ is an on-going liability for the generator of the material\, members of the public or the environment in the vicinity of the stored material and the state/territory government in which it is being stored. \nComparison with other jurisdictions such as the United States (under 40 CFR 261 & 10 CFR 61) shows that the on-going storage and continual growth of material stockpiles\, is identified as a major risk for solid wastes and mixed wastes that include radioactive components and is generally not permissible. \nBy Dean Crouch\, Radiation Services Manager at Oceaneering  \nDean has provided high-level advice and consultation in occupational hygiene\, radiation safety and safety management systems to the oil&gas and mining sectors for the last 10 years. Having held roles on both sides of the regulatory fence on the subject of specialised radiation safety with industrial sealed sources and NORM waste material produced during oil& gas and mining production and decommissioning. Dean has also been lead project advisor/manager for the only two large-scale oil produced NORM disposal campaigns to leave Australia for final disposal overseas. \n

SUMMARY:OGFG - July Technical Talk - Sign of the Times: The Graduate Conundrum
DESCRIPTION:In the current challenging market one of the first areas to suffer are graduate programs and graduate recruitment. This responds to immediate needs and pressures without recognizing the future impact when growth returns\, i.e. the challenge to rebuild without breadth\, core capabilities\, Company knowledge and young talent to support the expansion. The better solution is to invest in their development now to support the future\, but how do you make them effective and keep them engaged and busy. This presentation looks at some of the issues we face with the current market and how you might develop effectively for the future. \nAbout the Presenter: \n \nEvan Boyle has lived and worked in Perth for 25 years and has been involved in many of WA’s significant Offshore Oil and Gas Developments. For the last 14 years he has worked for Technip\, and as VP Engineering\, headed its Onshore\, Offshore and Sub Sea engineering activities. He was also a member of Technip’s Executive Committee\, where his roles included Talent Management and the development of the Graduate Program. \n  \nKnowledge Transfer and development of Engineers has always been a passion of Evan’s and this effort was rewarded in 2014 when Technip’s Graduate Program was voted in the top 5 Australian Graduate Programs in the Australian Association of Graduate Employers (AAGE) survey. Evan now leads Graduate Development Solutions and is working with Companies such as ARV to improve their Graduates’ effectiveness\, capability and loyalty.

SUMMARY:Facilities Group - June Technical Talk. Performance prediction and management of a degraded mooring system.
DESCRIPTION:Performance Prediction and Management of a Degraded Mooring System. \nIn 2013 OMV commenced an inspection campaign to baseline the condition of the mooring for the FPSO Raroa in the Maari field off New Zealand. During this campaign extensive damage was discovered in a number of the mooring legs. This damage threatened the integrity of the mooring and OMVs ability to safely produce onto the asset. A partial repair was conducted in 2013 but further damaged re-occurred in an unrepaired leg over the subsequent year. A final\, complete\, repair was completed early in 2016 which corrected the issues in the mooring and positioned it to perform its duty for the remaining life of the field. Through out this period of actual damage and predicted degradation an extensive campaign of monitoring\, modeling and inspection was conducted to evaluate risk levels\, support decisions on project timing and demonstrate sufficient integrity remained to produce. This presentation outlines some of the methods and approaches used during this campaign\, discusses some of the lessons learned and gives insights into management of badly behaved moorings. \n \nBy Stuart Wales\, Principal Engineer\, AMOG Consulting PTY \nMr Stuart Wales has over 20 years experience in the offshore industry\, covering a range of sectors from subsea development and deep-water installation through to R&D. Mr Wales was a Project Manager on The West Seno Mooring Project which won AMOG an Engineering Excellence Award in 2011\, and project managed AMOGs support to OMV in managing and mitigating the degraded mooring on the Maari FPSO. He is currently an Associate Director and Principal Engineer at AMOG Consulting \nThanks to Our Venue Sponsor:

SUMMARY:SPE Facilities Group & AINDT Technical Evening - RVI Revolution. How it's reducing risk\, time & costs in our industry.
DESCRIPTION:Title: RVI REVOLUTION. How it’s reducing risk\, time & costs in our industry. \n  \nAbstract: Remote Visual Inspection (RVI) has evolved from a ‘nice to have’ to an industry expectation. In fact\, it’s such a focus in some areas for RVI that a benchmark target of 2020 is the date set for confined space entry elimination on some Oil & Gas Facilities. RVI has been evolving in highly technical and specialized industries such as aviation and nuclear for decades\, proving its benefits through quality\, risk-reducing inspection programs and ultimately cost saving. Now\, this technology is exploding in our industry bringing the same benefits; a few success stories will show how to overcome the major RVI challenges in today’s facilities. The goal of how to enter\, how to acquire\, and increasingly more important\, how to get there safely. \n  \n \nAbout Jason: he worked for more than 20 years domestically and internationally on installations\, commissioning\, and start-up managing multi-disciplined activities involving the use of technology. He previously held roles within Woodside\, Alcoa\, and Chevron. And projects in Australia\, Singapore\, Thailand\, Kuwait\, Ghana\, and Dubai\, in 2014 Jason launched Nexxis with a vision of bringing state-of-the-art equipment combined with technical know-how into Australia and New Zealand. \nThanks to Our Venue Sponsor:

SUMMARY:Facilities Group Technical Evening - Optimising Pipeline Inspection Frequency With a Simple Probabilistic Method
DESCRIPTION:Optimising Pipeline Inspection Frequency With a Simple Probabilistic Method by Rex Hubbard from Atteris. \nThe integration of historical flow assurance assessments and corrosion engineering enabled an ageing flowline’s past corrosion condition to be estimated\, however the resulting deterministic estimate of pit depths would have required a near-term inline inspection campaign. A simplified probabilistic estimate of historical and future corrosion pitting depths provided an improved understanding of the likelihood of failure and allowed an optimised inline inspection frequency. \nAbout Our Presenter \n \nRex Hubbard is a chemical engineer with 25 years engineering experience principally in process engineering\, flow assurance\, subsea systems design and subsea project management.  Since 2014 Rex has been a Business Stream Leader with Atteris Pty Ltd\, a subsea and pipeline engineering consultancy. In this role he has\, amongst other things\, managed a number of concept studies\, pipeline repair plan revisions\, the development of unconventional pipeline repair methods and performed integrated flow assurance & internal corrosion assessments of late-life subsea assets. Rex is currently a Committee Member of the SUT’s Perth Branch. \nThanks to Our Venue Sponsor:

SUMMARY:OGFG - March Technical Talk - The Digital Oilfield\, Process Visualisation and Automated Surveillance – Getting Value From Your Data
DESCRIPTION:The Digital Oilfield\, Process Visualisation and Automated Surveillance – Getting Value From Your Data. by Henry Gordon-Wright \nThe oil and gas industry has led the world in the development and utilisation of “big data”.  Beginning with seismic data in the 1960s\, the industry now generates and processes petabytes of data every day.  Whilst dealing with terabytes of seismic data is now commonplace\, the industry is only just beginning to realise the value that can be generated by fully exploiting the hundreds of simulations and tens of thousands of sensors that make up a large modern field development. \n\nIn this presentation\, we will look at the benefits and barriers to both developing and maximising the value of the digital oilfield. We’ll look at some examples of how process dashboards and visualisation have helped operators to understand their process on a more intuitive level and how leveraging the data in process historians can improve process efficiency\, minimise downtime and reduce maintenance interventions.  Finally\, we’ll look at how integrating process data with simulation packages can allow operators to quickly evaluate operational scenarios for process optimisation\, forward planning and debottlenecking. \n  \nAbout Henry Gordon-Wright \nAfter graduating with a Masters in Aerospace Engineering Henry briefly worked as an analyst in the financial services industry before joining Frazer-Nash engineering consultancy.  Whilst at Frazer-Nash Henry worked on a wide range of projects covering marine hydrodynamics\, advanced CFD modelling\, human injury and blast simulation and root cause analysis for the nuclear\, defence\, marine\, and oil and gas industries.  Henry also represented the company on the MoD Weapons Effects Modelling working group and the Energy Institute Subsea AVIFF (Avoidance of Vibration Induced Fatigue Failure) working group.  After moving to Perth to join Xodus Group in 2013\, Henry’s work has focussed on flow assurance and process engineering for operators in Perth and the Middle East. \n
