SUMMARY:Gaia Webinar: Indonesia Geothermal Resources & Economic Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:https://connect.spe.org/sdts/home\n  \nA free webinar hosted by SPE Western Australia.  \nPlease register here \nThe Speaker\nRachmat A Abdoellah has 32 + years’ experience in energy company and worked for Chevron IndoAsia Business Unit as Vice President of Planning and Technology in early 2000 during that time Chevron was the largest operator of Geothermal Operations in Indonesia and Philippines and produced 20% of energy needs in Indonesia from Oil and Gas and Geothermal. Rachmat transitioned to lead PT Pranata Energi Nusantara (PENConsulting)\, an Indonesian process consultant\, as Executive Director and as of June 2026 as President Director and continues to advice and support energy projects through strategic consulting services. \nHis Talk\nGlobal Capacity Baseline: Global installed geothermal capacity stands at 17.2 GW across 35 nations\, supplying continuous 24/7 carbon-free baseload energy with capacity factors exceeding 80–90%. Supply is heavily concentrated\, with the top 10 nations holding over 93% of capacity—led by the United States (~3\,950 MW) and Indonesia (2\,740 MW).\nIndonesia’s Strategic Reserve: Tectonically positioned along the Pacific Ring of Fire\, Indonesia holds an estimated 24 to 28 GW of geothermal potential (~40% of the world’s total reserves). With only ~10–11% tapped to date\, the archipelago offers massive headroom for institutional\, foreign\, and private capital.\nRegional Resource Distribution: Reserves are structured across three volcanic belts:\n• Sumatra Corridor (~9.6 GW): Largest concentration of untapped high-enthalpy greenfield reserves.\n• Java & Bali Corridor (~9.3 GW): Located directly adjacent to high-density industrial load centers.\n• Eastern Island Arcs (~5.1 GW): Critical for displacing island diesel generation and powering regional mineral processing.Market Ownership Structure: State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) anchor the market under Geothermal Working Areas (Wilayah Kerja Panas Bumi / WKP). PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) controls ~80%+ of domestic operations (~727 MW direct\, ~1\,205 MW via Joint Operation Contracts). PT PLN (Persero) serves as the national power off-taker while developing regional island WKPs.\nAcreage Acquisition Pathways: Managed via ESDM’s digital GENESIS portal\, acreage is allocated through three regulatory routes: Public WKP Auctions for surveyed blocks; PSPE Assignments (private early exploration earning a Right of First Refusal); and SOE Direct Assignments for national strategic assets.\nUpstream Financial De-Risking: Exploratory test wells cost $6M to $8M each with ~50% dry-hole risk. Indonesia mitigates this via the Geothermal Resource Risk Mitigation (GREM) facility ($650M+ World Bank/PT SMI platform converting failed wells into non-repayable grants)\, government-drilled blocks\, and 100% tax/duty exemptions.\nNext-Gen Value Expansion: To increase project returns beyond traditional state power purchase agreements (8–12% IRR)\, developers are building integrated Multi-Product Energy Hubs (targeting 14–20%+ IRR). Key revenue drivers include Green Hydrogen and Ammonia co-generation\, Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) from hot brine\, direct thermal heat utilization\, and carbon offset monetization.

SUMMARY:October 2026 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Chris Fair – SPE Distinguished Lecturer\nAbout the Presentation: \nPro-Active Reservoir & Production Engineering Surveillance is the practice of observing and analyzing historic and real-time pressure\, rate & temperature data\, understanding the performance of a well/reservoir (and how/why it may be changing)\, then managing the well to maximize the Net Present Value (NPV) and/or reserves recovery. A surveillance engineer should also actively look for ways to improve a well’s performance. \nIn Well/Reservoir Management\, there is a balance between maximizing short-term production rates and maximizing the long-term reserves recovery\, with the overall goal being to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the asset. However\, the parameters used to determine this balance are dynamic. Reservoirs and fractures can compact. Skin can accrete due to fines\, scale\, asphaltenes\, fluid changes\, or proppant movement. Drive mechanisms can change\, faults can leak\, frac hits can happen; water contacts can move. \nThe job of the surveillance engineer revolves around the tracking of how and why these parameters change\, combined with evolving strategies to maximize the asset’s NPV. The lecture will demonstrate what effective Surveillance Engineering can accomplish. It will also describe the automated tools available to surveillance engineers\, discuss the workflows of the engineering team using the automation\, and demonstrate ways to present surveillance results\, conclusions and recommendations to engineering managers and other decision makers in a clear and concise manner. \nMajor Take-Away: Automated Reservoir & Production Engineering Surveillance gives engineers more time to think about what the results mean – it’s much easier to check the results than to do the number crunching manually! Critically\, this permits engineers to get ahead of problems before they cause permanent damage and/or become prohibitively expensive to fix. \nAbout the Presenter: \nChris Fair received his BS in Chemical Engineering (1994) and his MS in Petroleum Engineering (1997) from the University of Houston. Early in his career\, he worked in both the chemical industry and the upstream oil/gas sector. These included roles in process operations\, project/design engineering\, PVT and fluid mechanics research\, well instrumentation\, MWD/LWD\, technical writing\, and process control. In 1997\, Chris joined Data Retrieval Corporation (SPIDR). In 2005\, he started Oilfield Data Services\, Inc. (ODSI)\, a firm that specializes in Reservoir Management and Production Engineering Surveillance\, a professional passion. One of his principal pastimes is singing with the Houston Symphony Chorus. \nAbout the Event \nDate: Thursday\, 8 October 2026\nLocation: Pulse Technology Hub\nAddress: 915 Hay St\, Perth WA \nTime: 4:45pm – 5:00pm Registration & Networking.\nTime: 5:00pm – 5:50pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime: 5:50pm – 6:00pm Q&A Session.\nTime: 6:00pm – 7:30 pm Networking drinks & nibbles. \nConcession tickets are available for Students\, Retirees and Unemployed. It has a shorter atmospheric lifespan than carbon dioxide\, but it is far more powerful over the near term. That makes methane emissions reductions one of the fastest levers available to slow warming. With upstream activities being responsible for 80% of oil and gas methane\, this makes them the top priority for action and for focus by Petroleum Engineers. \nAfter Yvette’s short presentation she will join an engaging “fireside” chat\,  and take questions and comments from the audience. \nYvette Manolas is a distinguished global climate authority and senior executive with over 25 years of strategic and technical leadership across energy\, industrial operations and climate policy. A proven operator of scale\, she has run oil and gas businesses with revenues in excess of $3 billion per annum and overseen assets and projects valued above $20 billion through high risk safety events\, major turnarounds\, COVID\, severe weather crises and complex project integrations.  Yvette advises the world’s preeminent climate institutions—including the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF)\, the United Nations’ International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) and MiQ Methane Certification and serves as an Executive in Residence at Deloitte. She also works with a range of global governments\, is a regular peer reviewer for the International Energy Agency (IEA)\, a Non-Executive Director of the CO2CRC and a Fellow of the UK Energy Institute. SUMMARY:Improving Safety and Integrity through Digital Visualisation
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our June 2026 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting hosted by the Facilities and Digital Group \n  \nAbout the Two Presentations \nIntegrating Metering Data into Digital Twin Architectures\nABSTRACT to follow \nPresenter:  Andrew Tran is the Technical Lead for Asia Pacific at FutureOn\, where he leads the adoption of advanced digital technologies to transform offshore energy project development. He has more than 15 years of global experience across the energy\, mining\, and process industries\, with deep expertise in digital twin systems\, integrated asset modelling\, and production optimization. Before joining FutureOn\, Andrew spent over a decade at Schlumberger as a Senior Production Optimization Engineer. In that role\, he led complex projects across Australia\, New Zealand\, and East Timor\, working on LNG cargo nomination systems\, subsea network optimization\, artificial lift design\, and dynamic reservoir–well simulations. His background spans multiple sectors\, including oil and gas\, iron ore\, smelting\, pharmaceuticals\, and downstream petroleum\, which allows him to effectively bridge technical and operational teams. Andrew has provided consulting and training throughout Asia\, Europe\, and Oceania\, and he continues to advocate for data-driven\, collaborative workflows to support the next generation of offshore energy projects. \n  \nNo Boots Required: Safer Facility Access Through Digital Visualisation\nOffshore and remote petroleum facilities are under growing pressure to cut operating costs\, enhance safety\, retain specialized expertise\, and minimize personnel travel to hazardous or isolated locations. High-resolution 3D visualization technologies\, including digital twins\, drone-captured data\, and remote inspection workflows\, provide a practical solution by creating accurate\, accessible visual representations of physical assets. These immersive platforms enable operations\, maintenance\, engineering\, and integrity teams to virtually access equipment\, structures\, and hard-to-reach locations\, significantly reducing the need for routine site visits\, vessel or helicopter transfers\, rope access\, confined-space entry\, and other high-risk activities. \nThe technology supports diverse practical applications across the facility lifecycle\, including remote familiarization\, maintenance planning\, scope validation\, shutdown preparation\, anomaly review\, asset integrity assessments\, and brownfield project planning. These use cases facilitate better collaboration between onshore and offshore teams\, resulting in reduced rework\, improved planning accuracy\, faster decision-making\, and enhanced communication between technical disciplines. By enabling virtual access to work fronts and equipment\, organizations can rethink traditional site-based workflows and transition toward more efficient operating models that maintain operational excellence while minimizing physical presence requirements. Beyond cost savings and productivity gains\, remote visualization delivers significant human benefits by supporting improved work-life balance\, reducing time away from family\, and lowering exposure to fatigue and travel-related risks. For operators managing Australian and international facilities\, these technologies represent an opportunity to create safer\, more efficient\, and more inclusive operating models. The presentation shares lessons from practical deployment of Remote Digital Visual Inspection (RDVI) approaches\, demonstrating how facilities teams can integrate these tools into broader digital transformation\, safety improvement\, and operational excellence programs. \nPresenter: Aidan Scanlon is the Strategic Account Manager at RemSense\, where he works with clients to identify opportunities\, strengthen relationships\, and support the adoption of digital asset visualisation and industrial technology solutions. With a background in mechanical engineering\, data analytics\, motorsport\, and manufacturing innovation\, Aidan brings a practical\, technically grounded perspective to solving complex operational challenges. Since joining RemSense in 2021\, he has contributed across engineering\, operations\, and digital transformation initiatives\, helping asset-intensive organisations better visualise\, understand\, and manage critical infrastructure. SUMMARY:SPE - PESA Joint Technical Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia (SPE-WA) together with Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia (PESA-WA) are proud to present the details of our May 2026 joint Technical Evening Meeting. \n\nAbout the Presentations:\nThe Bonaparte CCS Project – Mathieu Muller (INPEX)\nAs part of its Vision 2035\, INPEX is progressing carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives to support lower-carbon energy solutions. This presentation will provide an overview of INPEX’s global CCS strategy. It will also highlight the company’s efforts to decarbonise its upstream operations\, including proposed development of the Bonaparte CCS Project – an initiative aimed at providing safe\, permanent offshore CO₂ storage to support emissions reduction. \nThe Integration of Core and FMI Borehole Image Data in Understanding Reservoir Heterogeneity for CCS Studies: West Peron-1 and West Peron-2\, Bonaparte Basin – Fiona Burns (Task Fronterra)\nCore and FMI borehole image data from wells West Peron-1 and West Peron -2 provide a remarkable dataset for gaining insights into reservoir architecture and heterogeneity in the Jurassic to Cretaceous successions of the Bonaparte Basin. Such information is critical in the assessment of suitable sites for the long-term storage of CO2 in the Bonaparte Basin in terms of injectivity potential and movement of the CO2 plume (porosity\, permeability\, lateral and vertical heterogeneity). \nThis talk will focus on the Elang and Frigate formations\, which comprise exceptionally thick successions of deltaic and shallow marine sediments with highly complex depositional histories. The high-resolution FMI data\, calibrated with core\, provides precise information on lithofacies\, depositional environments and sediment-dispersal trends. The FMI data also assists in the interpretation of bedform architecture and channel-fill style. Integrated core and FMI data aids evaluation of the key controls on deposition i.e. river-\, wave & and storm\, – and tidal influences. This talk will summarise the evolution of both the Elang and Frigate formations\, highlighting the dominant controls on deposition of these formations. This approach also provides an invaluable framework in which small-scale features that can cause baffles/barriers to fluid flow can be assessed e.g. tidal clay drapes\, fluid-mud deposits\, types and degrees of bioturbation\, the presence of cemented layers and concretions. \nGeomechanical Modelling of Hydrogen Storage at the CO2CRC Otway International Test Centre – Ratih Puspitasari (SLB) with an introduction by Eric Tenthorey (Geoscience Australia) \n\nAustralia’s emerging hydrogen economy depends on the ability to safely store large quantities of hydrogen underground. As part of the national Exploring for the Future program\, this study assesses the suitability of depleted gas fields for hydrogen storage\, using the CO2CRC Otway International Test Centre as a representative site. \nWith natural gas and CO₂ storage far more extensively characterised\, these systems provide essential reference points for understanding subsurface hydrogen storage behaviour. However\, hydrogen’s distinct density\, viscosity\, compressibility\, and thermal properties mean that established injection and storage practices from these gases cannot be assumed to apply directly. To investigate these differences\, this study presents the first like‑for‑like comparison of hydrogen\, methane\, and carbon dioxide behaviour under identical reservoir conditions. A fully coupled reservoir–geomechanics–thermal model was developed for this purpose\, incorporating high‑resolution wellbore grids to quantify pressure\, temperature\, and stress evolution. \nResults show that hydrogen injection generates significantly lower thermal perturbations than methane or CO₂\, reducing the likelihood of thermally induced fault reactivation and wellbore fracturing. Simulations also demonstrate that moderated injection rates further minimise thermal and pressure impacts\, providing additional operational safeguards. The study underscores the importance of integrating flow modelling with geomechanical risk assessment and highlights how dynamic injection control strategies can enhance the safety and efficiency of future hydrogen storage projects. \n  \n\nAbout the Presenters:\nMathieu Muller is the CCS and Gas Supply Manager at INPEX Australia\, where he leads the Bonaparte CCS Subsurface team through appraisal and pre-FEED stages\, while overseeing the Gas Supply team in developing and optimising long-term gas strategies.Prior to joining INPEX in 2023\, Mathieu built a global career with Chevron\, Total Energies\, and Beicip-Franlab taking on diverse technical and leadership roles across Australia\, Indonesia\, USA\, and France. He holds advanced engineering qualifications from the Paris School of Mines and IFP School\, specialising in executive and reservoir engineering. With over 25 years of experience in the energy sector\, Mathieu has progressed from hands-on reservoir and simulation engineering to senior subsurface leadership\, contributing to projects spanning oil\, gas\, and CO₂ sequestration – from appraisal through to operations.Mathieu also served on Chevron’s Reserves Advisory Committee\, lending his expertise to ensure robust reserves and storage resource estimations\, in line with industry best practices and SEC regulatory standards. \nFiona Burns is the Perth/APAC Manager at Task Fronterra Geoscience and is the PESA WA President.  Fiona has over 30 years’ experience in the Oil and Gas industry with expertise in the ichnofabric analysis\, and the application of trace-fossil analysis to depositional modelling and high-resolution sequence stratigraphy. \nPrior to this she collaborated on various subsurface projects worldwide through her company  Firmground\, including UK North Sea\, offshore West Africa\, offshore China\, offshore Thailand\, Papua New Guinea and NZ. SUMMARY:ZEUS: Zero Emission Unconventional Station
DESCRIPTION:This is an online webinar hosted by SPE Gaia and SPE WA\n  \nplease register here:  https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/3414731c-44cd-4f9a-806b-52efbf068188@5a740cd7-5768-4d09-ae13-f706b09fa22c \n  \nThe Talk\nZEUS is a high-pressure oxyfuel power technology that turns gas streams with very high CO₂ content into dispatchable low-carbon electricity. By using advanced combustion and fully integrated CO₂ capture\, it can process untreated gas\, capture nearly all emissions\, and send the CO₂ for storage or reuse\, which makes previously stranded gas resources potentially valuable. The key appeal of ZEUS is that it offers a compact\, simplified pathway to “blue” power that could be cheaper and easier to deploy than more conventional treatment-heavy systems. While it is still early-stage at TRL 3\, the planned demonstration unit will be an important test of whether it can scale into a practical bridge technology for cleaner energy supply. \nThe Speaker\nMuhammad Aqmal Bin Ratasha is a Technology Programme Manager at PETRONAS Upstream with over 17 years of experience spanning technical operations\, project execution\, and technology commercialisation\, especially in low-carbon energy initiatives. He is recognized for bridging engineering expertise with commercial value\, helping translate complex technical ideas into practical business outcomes. He holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS\, has API certifications\, and is also deeply committed to fitness\, nutrition\, and continuous self-improvement.

SUMMARY:Key Learnings of Low Carbon Intensity Hydrogen Industry
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our April 2026 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting. \nAbout the Presentations:\nPresentation 1: An Examination of Global Government Policies to Stimulate a Low Carbon Intensity Hydrogen Industry – What Can Be Learned? \nWith the advent of Net Zero pledges by multiple large nations in recent times\, there has been a proliferation of national strategies to stimulate and establish hydrogen industries by as many as sixty nations. Hydrogen production has widely been touted as a potential pathway to reduce emissions\, gain energy independence and diversify energy supply.  Much of the recent effort has focused on constructing government policy to encourage and incubate the hydrogen industry with a view to the prospect that as production expands\, unit cost should reduce and technological hurdles should be overcome. \nThis presentation will examine the strategies of various key countries and states around the world to extract learnings that might better inform and aid in the execution of future low-carbon-intensity hydrogen industry aspirations.  By completing a literature review\, examining key hydrogen strategy documents\, studying current media articles\, and speaking to key industry analysts\, a deeper understanding has been gained of the dynamics of the global hydrogen government policy space.  Key country hydrogen strategies were examined for the USA\, the EU\, UK\, Singapore\, Japan\, China\, and Brazil.  Examinations were conducted focusing on a series of policy metrics and a scoring key was used to summarize the relative strength of each country’s hydrogen strategy. \nAmongst a series of findings on global hydrogen policies\, this research project raises a whole range of philosophical questions around the appropriate approach to technology development\, government policy paradigms on how to incentivize such efforts\, and whether any of these approaches can achieve the desired end goal. \nPresenter 1:  Peter Tippet is a freelance energy consultant and PhD candidate at UWA\, most recently qualified with a Master of Renewable and Future Energy degree from the University of Western Australia.  Prior to this\, Peter worked as a Reservoir Engineer in various roles over a period of 30 years with Chevron in Perth (Australia)\, Paris (France)\, San Ramon (California)\, and Aberdeen (Scotland)\, and for BHP in Melbourne and in Darwin (Australia)\, and Western Mining in Perth. \nPeter also holds a BSc (with First Class Hons) in Physics and an MBA (with Distinction) from Curtin University.  Peter has been a member of the SPE for 34 years. \n  \nPresentation 2:  Geologic Hydrogen Storage in the Northern Perth Basin: A Case Study of Cyclic Storage in the Depleted Yardarino Gas Field  \nThe rapid expansion of variable renewable energy (VRE) in Western Australia’s South-West Interconnected System (SWIS) is expected to increase the frequency of curtailment or “spilled” renewable electricity. Converting surplus renewable electricity into hydrogen and storing it underground offers a potential pathway to provide longduration energy storage and dispatchable power generation. A recent study evaluates the technical feasibility of underground geologic hydrogen storage (UGHS) in the northern Perth Basin using the depleted Yardarino gas field as a case study. \nA compositional reservoir simulation model of the Yardarino field\, integrating well logs\, core data\, structural mapping and production history was constructed. Subsequent to history matching\, scenarios evaluating cyclic hydrogen injection and production over a ten-year period using six-month injection and withdrawal cycles were undertaken. \nResults from these hydrogen cycling cases indicated that gravity segregation of hydrogen within the gas cap is dominant\, resulting in a localized hydrogen plume near the structural crest. After approximately three cycles\, produced gas purity exceeded 90% hydrogen and continued to improve with subsequent cycles. Diffusion and dispersion effects were found to be secondary relative to density-driven segregation during the cycling period. Vertical crestal wells provided better hydrogen recovery and purity compared with horizontal wells due to the localized hydrogen bubble development. \nThese results suggest that depleted gas reservoirs in the northern Perth Basin could provide technically viable seasonal hydrogen storage capable of supporting renewable energy integration and flexible power generation within the SWIS. \nPresenter 2:  Mitch Ellis is Technical Director and co-Founder of Ecossaus.Ltd\, raising capital to develop solution-mined cavern storage of Hydrogen\, Compressed Air and Refined Petroleum products in Australia. Over a 40-year career he worked for SANTOS\, WAPET (now Chevron)\, BHP (Melbourne & Algeria)\, Saudi Aramco (Dhahran\, Saudi Arabia)\, AWE (Sydney and Perth) and Mitsui (Perth) in technical\, commercial\, and general management roles. Mitch is presently undertaking a PhD at Curtin University. \n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $65 <Until 16 April 2026>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $80 <Until 16 April 2026>\n                       SPE Member                          $75\n                       Non-Member                          $90 \nDate:              Thursday\, 23 April 2026 \nLocation:       Pulse Technology Hub\nAddress:       915 Hay St\, Perth WA \nTime:             4:45pm – 5:00pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             5:00pm – 5:50pm Opening remarks and presentations.\nTime:             5:50pm – 6:00pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:00pm – 7:30 pm  Networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Innovation at Scale – Digital DNA in Energy Sector
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our March 2026 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting. \n  \n                       *****  Please Note Venue and Date Change  *****\nNew Venue: Pulse Technology Hub\,  915 Hay St. Perth \nNew Date: Wednesday\, 25 March 2026 \n  \nAbout the Presentations:\n  \nPresentation 1: \n Agentic AI Powered Industrial Work Surface — Have We Unlocked the Ultimate Solution? \nIn an era where industrial complexity is outpacing human bandwidth\, the emergence of agentic AI-powered industrial work surfaces marks a pivotal shift in how decisions are made across asset-intensive sectors like LNG. These platforms transcend traditional dashboards by integrating real-time data\, physics-based simulations\, and collaborative AI agents into a unified digital environment. The result? A step-change in the speed\, quality\, and precision of operational decision-making. \nRather than relying on fragmented systems and manual coordination\, teams now operate within a shared\, context-rich workspace where AI agents continuously observe\, analyse\, and recommend actions. From orchestrating workflows to simulating outcomes and enforcing compliance\, these agents act as digital collaborators—augmenting human expertise without replacing it. \nThe impact is tangible: faster response times\, reduced decision latency\, and more consistent execution across maintenance\, operations\, and planning. By embedding intelligence directly into the flow of work\, industrial work surfaces enable organizations to move from reactive firefighting to proactive optimization—without sacrificing control or transparency. \nAs industries navigate volatility\, decarbonization\, and workforce transformation\, the question is no longer whether to adopt AI\, but how to do so responsibly and effectively. There’s never been a better time to consider an Agentic AI powered industrial work surface (not just a dumb digital twin)\, that offers a compelling answer—one that aligns human judgement with machine precision to unlock a new standard of operational excellence. \nPresenter 1: \nSiddharth (Sid) SETIA is GM APAC for Kongsberg Digital\, where he spearheads Business Growth and Strategy across APAC markets including Australia\, New Zealand\, India\, and Japan. Bringing more than two decades of industry experience\, Sid joined Kongsberg Digital in early 2024\, following a distinguished 15+ year tenure with the Fortune 500 Japanese conglomerate. Beyond his role at KDI\, Sid contributes as a Board member on Society of Petroleum Engineer’s – Western Australia Chapter (SPE)\, Norwegian Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (NACC) and a Hyper-AI tech start-up focused on subsurface geology. \nSid is a Mechanical Engineer (India) and holds a post-grad in Petroleum Engineering from Curtin University\, Australia. \n  \nPresentation 2: \n Innovation at Scale:  Oil and Gas – Outside in View \nIt can be argued that Innovation was not central to survival in O&G industry. The basic playbook from Exploration to Retail was established\, decades ago; continues to exist\, and therefore the commercial sustainability was never a challenge apart from Commodity pricing &/or geo-political flux. Fundamental ‘resource demand’ was (and ignoring the noise\, it still is) not a question & Supply too was not an issue. Hence why innovate (read ‘cost’) when it’s not central but merely a plug in. \nYet\, the imperative for Innovation is still the same – ‘Power Law’\, one break through pays for all the bad bets\, making the pain worthwhile. \nWith the headwinds to the O&G sector (Climate Transition\, Political Instability\, Energy Security)\, innovation might be needed to survive and not merely differentiate. Currently\, Continuous improvement is disguised as innovation. This needs to be reflected upon and challenged. (e.g. SpaceX disrupts Space Technology\, ChatGPT disrupts Search). \nHence\, we need to devise key principles to ‘revitalise’ the innovator’s DNA which appears dormant (not absent though). What a Digital Clay map can look like today for Operators. Key questions include defining the north star and establishing the governance structure. \nIn this talk\, we will also examine current mode of R&D operations that few super majors have adopted\, and we discuss an interesting case study of the digital innovation creating a ‘Vertical Integration’ opportunity in mining\, thereby disrupting the business model. What could be the O&G take away. \nAlso\, we will try to examine temporally the key change thesis from- “what? So what? Why now? What now?” Lens pioneered by Don Valentine (Sequoia). \nPresenter 2: \nMohit Tiwary  is partnering with Major Energy organizations with global footprints\, supporting their business imperatives. \nRecent forays include transformative and consulting assignments with Business and Technology leaders including CxOs relevant to Field/facility Operations and Production. This includes bringing together innovation engagements and developing Industry first solutions together. Core Belief is that Sustainability is a function of ‘agile innovation’ at intersection of people-process-technology. \nAbove is underpinned through the Oil & Gas experience gained during the formative years in FPSO Topside Design Engineering\, Refinery Turnaround\, Maintenance Planning & Scheduling\, Major & Minor Projects management\, Process Safety and Reliability Management. He has strong exposure to various Ops & Maintenance systems and has helped in process implementation\, optimization and modernization initiatives with Australian Oil & Gas Customers. \n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $65 <Until 19 March 2026>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $80 <Until 19 March 2026>\n                       SPE Member                          $75\n                       Non-Member                          $90 \nDate:              Wednesday\, 25 March 2026 \nLocation:       Pulse Technology Hub\nAddress:       915 Hay St\, Perth WA \nTime:             4:45pm – 5:00pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             5:00pm – 5:50pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             5:50pm – 6:00pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:00pm – 7:30 pm  Networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Persistent Bias in Probabilistic Production Forecasting and Simple Methods to Overcome It
DESCRIPTION:                         *****  Distinguished Lecturer  *****\n  \nSociety of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our February 2026 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting. \n  \n                       *****  Please Note Venue Change  *****\nNew Venue: Pulse Technology Hub\,  915 Hay St. Perth \n  \nAbout the Presentation:\nUnbiased probabilistic production forecasts are a crucial component in making value-creating investment decisions\, but typical methods result in persistent\, value-destroying biases. There are quick and easy ways to make accurate\, unbiased forecasts. \nIncreased awareness of uncertainty\, combined with increasingly sophisticated tools and models for quantifying it\, is causing a shift from deterministic to probabilistic production forecasting. For these forecasts to lead to better investment decisions (e.g. assessing how much it’s worth paying to reduce uncertainty\, or incorporating flexibility to manage it)\, they need to be an accurate (unbiased) representation of the uncertainty. However\, our industry has a general history of overconfidence (ranges too narrow) and\, more damaging for value creation\, optimism (consistent over-estimation). \nA large dataset of historical probabilistic production forecasts was investigated for potential bias by comparing them with actual outcomes. They were found to be both optimistic and overconfident\, bringing into question their usefulness for decision-making and the value of the sophisticated uncertainty modeling techniques that were used to generate them. \nFortunately\, there are quick and easy methods for creating accurate probabilistic forecasts. We describe these and show that they would have produced accurate forecasts for our case study fields (they do not make use of knowing the actual outcomes!). \nFinally\, preliminary results from a similar analysis of renewables projects indicate that the same problems exist. This could significantly impact government and company investment decisions and policy development in renewable projects. \n  \nAbout the Distinguished Lecturer:\nReidar Bratvold is a Professor of Investment & Decision Analysis at the University of Stavanger\, specializing in decision analysis\, data analytics\, and behavioral challenges in decision-making. After 15 years of industry experience in technical and leadership roles\, Reidar transitioned to academia\, where he has contributed significantly to his fields of expertise. He co-authored ‘Making Good Decisions\,’ has served as an SPE Distinguished Lecturer\, and received the 2017 SPE Management & Information Award. SUMMARY:APAC Gaia Talk India’s Renewable Energy Journey: Policy Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:SPE APAC Gaia Talk – India’s Renewable Energy Journey: Policy Perspectives\nThis is an online  SPE Gaia Talk:  The link to register for free is here:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_10PLxZACQEel-Unr8D6klA\n\n\nThe Talk\nIndia has made remarkable progress in renewable energy (RE) development\, emerging as a global leader. The country now ranks fourth worldwide in overall installed renewable capacity\, third in solar\, and fourth in wind power. \nThe rapid expansion of RE capacity began around 2014\, marking a major shift in India’s energy landscape. Since then\, the nation has tripled its installed renewable capacity\, driven by ambitious targets\, policy reforms\, and strong private sector participation. Early growth was supported by direct subsidies\, but subsequent progress has relied on market-enabling measures such as demand aggregation\, payment security mechanisms\, and waivers of inter-state transmission charges. These initiatives reduced risks\, improved project bankability\, and attracted large-scale domestic and foreign investment. \nIndia’s long-term vision is clear: to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity by 2030\, in line with its commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2070. With about 236 GW of non-fossil capacity already in place\, India has made significant strides. Yet\, doubling this capacity within the next few years presents major challenges—particularly in land acquisition\, environmental sustainability\, and transmission infrastructure. Developing modern grids\, energy storage\, and flexible generation will be critical to integrating variable renewable energy while maintaining system reliability. \nAttention is now turning to new frontiers of clean energy. The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to position India as a global hub for producing and exporting green hydrogen\, helping decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like steel and fertilisers. Similarly\, offshore wind is being prioritized\, with Gujarat and Tamil Nadu identified as key development zones. These emerging technologies are expected to complement solar and onshore wind\, deepening India’s low-carbon transition. \nThis Gaia talk will review India’s renewable energy journey\, highlighting the policy frameworks that enabled its growth and the strategies needed for the next phase. It will explore lessons from India’s experience and outline policy priorities—including innovation\, investment\, and coordination—to ensure continued progress toward a clean\, resilient\, and inclusive energy future \nThe Presenter\nMr Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi was a civil servant in India for more than thirty-five years before his retirement in October 2022. During his lengthy career he held positions in a diverse range of areas. His work in the erstwhile Planning Commission from 2004 to 2008\, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) from 2008 to 2014\, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at Washington DC from 2014 to 2017 inter-alia pertained to design and implementation of economic policies. \n

SUMMARY:SPE APAC Gaia Talk - Environmental Proxies: A Critical Feature of Tracing Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:This is an online SPE APAC Gaia Talk on the 22nd September\, 1pm Perth\, KL\, 10.30am India\n  \nRegister for Free:  https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_M__Bh5v0S0COtDhErYdk6w \n\nThe Talk\nChange is a constant feature of our environment. Climate change and its related processes\, such as glacial melting and the greening of the Arctic\, are deeply interconnected with ecosystems. These ecological relationships are highly sensitive to environmental shifts\, making them valuable indicators for measuring the impact of climate change. \nFrom the Arctic to the tropics\, climate change has altered vegetation structures\, and tracking these changes helps us understand the direction and effects of global warming on ecosystems. In this scientific journey\, modelling and time-series analysis play a crucial role in predicting ecosystem dynamics. While models can be highly effective\, they also have limitations in capturing the full complexity of environmental change. Recognizing these gaps is essential\, as it allows us to refine our methods and make better-informed decisions. Understanding environmental indicators and piecing together their stories helps us adapt and respond wisely to ongoing changes. \nIn this session\, Dr Rohan Shetti will share insights from data collection and measurements that help track and interpret climate change. \nThe Speaker\nDr. Rohan Shetti is a climate scientist and entrepreneur leading a research group in Berlin and Pune\, focusing on climate change and environmental proxies. His work spans from the Arctic and temperate ecosystems to tropical forests in the Western Ghats\, with a core expertise in Landscape Ecology and Ecosystem Dynamics. \nThroughout his career\, Dr Shetti has consulted on multiple projects for the European Federation and has published in leading journals such as Nature\, Nature Communications\, Global Change Biology\, and Environmental Pollution. His PhD students\, conduct research on environmental proxies responding to global change. His team has also contributed data to the IPCC for climate forecasting. \nBeyond research\, Dr Shetti founded the Environmental Analytics course\, training students and young researchers. \n

SUMMARY:Degradation and lifetime prediction of polymers in subsea and offshore infrastructures
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA GAIA and Facility Seminar\n  \nSPE WA GAIA and SPE WA Facilities are jointly hosting a seminar at the new Pulse Technology Hub on the 19th August\, 5.30pm start. \nThe Talk\nOffshore infrastructure depends heavily on synthetic polymers and plastics due to their durability and resistance to corrosion and other environmental stimuli. However\, their degradation in deep marine environments remains poorly understood\, making lifespan predictions uncertain. This talk will focus on pertinent literature on the degradation of plastics and synthetic polymers in marine environments to gain insight into the fate of these materials when left in subsea conditions. We will discuss the important depth-dependent physicochemical parameters and how to account for them in predicting the lifespan of synthetic plastics and the possible formation of plastic debris. \nAs subsea infrastructures reach the end of their service life\, managing the plastic components becomes crucial for environmental and regulatory stakeholders. Therefore\, through a case study\, we will highlight the disconnect between lab tests\, models\, and real-world performance\, concluding with a forward-looking strategy to enhance service life and improve degradation predictions. \nThe Speaker\nDr Ibukun Oluwoye is a Research Fellow at the Curtin University Corrosion Centre and has a passion for solving real-world challenges in materials science and environmental sustainability. His research explores what happens to polymers and composites in harsh subsea environments\, helping industries make smarter decisions about offshore decommissioning. Ibukun has also developed recycling pathways and innovative approaches to reduce environmental impacts from legacy infrastructure. During a fellowship in Japan\, he worked on tackling plastic pollution by creating affordable membrane technologies for microplastic removal in water systems. He’s driven by the idea of blending science and practical solutions to create a more sustainable future.  He has a PhD in Engineering from Murdoch University

SUMMARY:SPE Gaia Masterclass - The Energy Transition in Australia – using Energy Literacy to Illuminate the Way Forward
DESCRIPTION:SPE Gaia is hosting a Masterclass on the 14th August reaching out to all SPE members worldwide\n  \nTo Register go here: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/1FJ7Sv7TSNeyLwlBFEirUA \nThe Talk\nEnergy is one of the hot button topics of the day. Our news feeds are filled with energy-related stories\, often liberally sprinkled with terms like firming\, storage\, intermittency and capacity factor\, as well as the basic terms “power” and “energy” – which sadly are often confused. Intermingled with the jargon is a plethora of units and acronyms: kW\, kWh\, PJ\, eV\, EV\, LNG\, LCOE\, BESS and FESS and hundreds more. Without delving too far into the physics\, Nick’s talk will use the Australian Energy Landscape as a case study to provide some clarity around the basic concepts of energy and power\, and will dive into some key examples to help sense check some of claims and counter claims that are made in this politically contentious field. \nThe Speaker\nNick Last is a consultant petroleum engineer specializing in the analysis of dynamic well & reservoir data. He began his career with Schlumberger in the North Sea and SE Asia\, and has subsequently delivered consulting projects for numerous operators worldwide. His interest in broader energy matters was sparked during an Australian road trip\, which by chance passed numerous wind and solar farms. Despite working for decades in the energy industry\, he realized that he didn’t really understand the nature of the power they produced\, nor how they fitted into our energy system. Since then he’s devoted considerable time to rectifying that knowledge deficit\, and has written and lectured extensively on energy related matters. Nick is a founder of Well Test Knowledge International and holds a BSc (Hons) in Physics from Imperial College\, London. \n
