SUMMARY:Is Mercury Contaminating your Natural Gas? Improved Accuracy in Downhole Analysis; A Case Study from Sand Face to Production Stream
DESCRIPTION:Organised by Main Technical Program\nNatural gas is a critical part of the world’s energy supply and plays an important role in the transition to lower carbon energy sources. Industry’s ability to process natural gas safely and efficiently will continue to rely on an accurate understanding of feed gas composition and contaminants\, particularly in enabling future developments via existing infrastructure. \nMercury is toxic to organisms and highly volatile. Produced from hydrocarbon basins globally\, the inaccurate measurement of mercury concentrations can potentially impact aspects of health\, process safety\, environment\, operations\, waste disposal\, and project decommissioning. Trace mercury concentrations in the hydrocarbon stream can potentially introduce liquid metal embrittlement hazards to industrial equipment\, including cryogenic heat exchangers used to refrigerate gas into LNG. Worldwide\, significant project cost overruns and processing incidents have resulted from uncertainty around mercury concentrations in hydrocarbon streams. \nSuccessful mercury management ideally begins early in a project’s lifecycle with development decisions informed by accurate measurement of mercury concentrations from reservoirs. Historically\, this has been problematic as mercury contamination and scavenging often results in large range of uncertainty in sampled gas. \nThe results and recommendations from a multi-company collaborative study to reduce mercury uncertainty in gas will be shared with industry. New downhole sampling and analysis techniques will be highlighted\, along with insights from a case study of the Julimar Field in Western Australia. The recommendations\, procedures and operational best practices discussed will be applicable across the industry\, and beneficial to any party considering the impact of mercury in the development and processing of natural gas resources. \nSpeaker Janelle Lawer\nWheatstone Technical Lead for Woodside\nJanelle Lawer is an energy industry professional with 20 years of working with supermajor and mid-size exploration and production companies in Australia and the USA. SUMMARY:SPE WA and PESA Joint Technical Evening Meeting - 50th Anniversary of Awakening the Giants
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our March Technical Evening Meeting as a joint event in collaboration with the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia (PESA). \nAbout the Presentation – Celebrating 50+ Years of Northwest Shelf Mega Gas Discoveries\nPresented by Don Poynton & Andrew Thompson \nThis year marks the 60th anniversary of Woodside’s first exploration permit on the North West Shelf. At some 337\,000 square kilometres and encompassing an area greater than the size of the British Isles and about half the size of Texas\, the permit was possibly the largest offshore oil and gas concession ever granted and well beyond Woodside’s ability to operate. \nImmediately after being awarded the permit in June 1963\, two of Woodside’s Directors set off overseas in a quest to find a farminee with offshore operating experience.  British company\, Burmah Oil Limited\, having done its own research in the region\, quickly agreed to take a one-third interest in the permit and the operatorship of the joint venture\, which soon after included Shell\, and slightly later BP and Standard Oil of California’s subsidiary Calasiastic joined the joint venture. \nBetween 1964 and 1976 Burmah Oil\, through its Australian subsidiary\, BOC of Australia Limited\, often referred to as BOCAL\, was responsible for all offshore exploration and appraisal activities on the North West Shelf. This included approximately 80\,000 km of seismic acquisition and the drilling of 58 wells\, of which 8 were appraisals and 50 wildcats with 13 that could be classified as discoveries. \nIn 1971\, the joint venture made four giant gas-condensate discoveries\, at\, Scott Reef\, North Rankin\, Goodwyn and Angel.  In 2021\, to mark the 50th anniversary of these discoveries\, Woodside helped ex-Burmah staff fund the making of four videos which captured the history behind two of these discoveries- Scott Reef and North Rankin. These videos include interviews with many of the people involved and footage which had been lost for many years or in some cases had never been shown publicly before (excuses in advance for the quality!). \nStudents (read below)!!! \nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical events. Please fill out an application form\, explaining why you are interested in attending the SPE WA technical events. Successful applicants will be notified via email. Note that applications will only be accepted up to one week prior to the event. \nFree tickets available for Students. Please apply through your Student Chapter. \nEvent Run Sheet (Catering – Drinks and Food will be provided) \n\nRegistration open from 4:45 pm\nNetworking drinks & food from 5:15 pm\nTechnical presentation introduction starting at 5:45 pm\n\nCost: \nSPE Members:                                $30.00 \nNon-members:                                 $50.00 \nBookings close 12 noon 8th March for venue and catering purposes.

SUMMARY:Solving the challenges of oil-free high-pressure hydrogen compression
DESCRIPTION:Hydrogen compressors are used for transport and storage of hydrogen for various applications\, including power to X\, feedstock for ammonia synthesis\, and nowadays mobility. In the context of mobility\, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) require compressed hydrogen to power their fuel cells and generate electricity to drive the vehicle’s electric motor. \nHydrogen supply for FCV’s is stored at high pressure at fueling stations\, typically around 550 bar (8\,000 psi)\, before dispensing it into the FCV’s on-board fuel tank. \nThis represents a big technical challenge\, in terms of compression\, since high pressure H2 used for fuel cells must be absolutely oil-free\, so compressors need to be able to reach very high pressures\, for a very light gas\, without using any lubricating fluid. \nSIAD Macchine Impianti exploited its long experience in hydrogen compression\, in order to develop innovative solutions to reliably face such a challenge. \n  \nAbout the Speakers\nClaudio Sangaletti is serving as Business Director of ASU and LNG units at SIAD Macchine Impianti S.p.A. with more than twenty years of experience in the field of contracting\, design and construction of cryogenic plants. He is also General Manager of SIAD Engineering (Hangzhou) Co.\, Ltd and SIAD Engineering Trading (Shanghai) Co.\, Ltd. Claudio uses his skills and experience to ensure the continuous growing and success of the ASU and LNG division worldwide. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering\, with a specialization in Automation and Robotic Science from Politecnico of Milan. He holds a Master in Contracting\, Engineering and Management of Mega Projects from School of Business of Politecnico of Milan. \nGianluigi De Mitri graduated with a M.Sc. in Management Engineering from the University of Bergamo\, Italy. He then studied Lean Startup and Business Model Innovation at the Berlin School of Economics and Law\, Germany. Gianluigi joined SIAD Macchine Impianti in 2015\, where he manages strategic marketing and business development initiatives on a global scale\, especially within the decarbonisation technologies and hydrogen economy industry. \nAbout the Event\nPrice: \n\nSPE Member $10\nNon-Member $15\n\nBring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nAdd your friend’s name to the field “Additional Guest Name” on the checkout page. \nDate:              Wednesday\, 22nd of February 2023 \nLocation:      Flux Basement\, 191 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime: \n4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration and Networking\n5:00 pm – 5:45 pm Presentation and Q&A Session\n5:45 pm – 6:45 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles

SUMMARY:SPE Distinguished Lecturer Technical Evening Meeting - The Role of CCS and Hydrogen in the Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our Feb 2023  SPE Distinguished Lecturer Technical Evening Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nContrary to popular belief\, the ongoing energy transition from a high to low carbon economy requires more than harnessing renewable energies.  Currently\, only 11% of global energy consumption come from renewable energy while 85% come from fossil fuels.  The current pace of installing renewable power plants is inadequate for nations to achieve net-zero by the second half of the century.  Achieving net-zero will require each country to decarbonize all three major energy consumptions sectors: power\, transport and industry. \nThere are essentially five ways to achieve this.  They are renewable energy\, carbon capture and storage (CCS)\, hydrogen\, nuclear energy and reducing energy demand.  How each country will utilize these ways to go through the energy transition will depend on its specific energy mix and the need to balance energy security\, affordability\, and sustainability. \nThis seminar will show how CCS and hydrogen are key to achieving net-zero in all three energy consumption sectors. Furthermore\, there is enough storage capacity in oil and gas fields\, and saline aquifers in the world to store two centuries of anthropgenic carbon dioxide emission. We will present several case studies of large-scale CCS demonstration projects in Europe and Asia and discuss what is needed to take CCS to the next level of implementation. \nAbout the Speaker – Hon Chung Lau\nProf. Lau worked for Shell’s upstream business for 35 years where he had held positions in R&D\, field development planning\, technical assurance\, training\, project management and technical leadership. From 2016-2021\, he was a professor of practice at the National University of Singaspore (NUS) and senior scientific advisor at Singapore’s Agency of Science\, Technology and Research (A*STAR). At NUS\, he taught and conducted research on unconventional and renewable energy resources.  In 2021\, Prof. Lau founded Low Carbon Energies\, a consulting firm focusing on the energy transition. \nHe holds BSc and PhD in chemical engineering from Caltech and Princeton\, respectively\, and is a registered professional engineer in Texas.  He is also an adjunct professor at the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at Rice University. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $40 <Until the 11 Feb 2023>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $60 <Until the 11 Feb 2023>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Wednesday\, 15 Feb 2023 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             16:45 am – 17:00 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             17:00 pm – 17:10 pm SPE WA Opening Marks.\nTime:             17:10 pm – 17:45 pm Presentation.\nTime:             17:45 pm – 18:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             18:00 pm – 19:30 pm Closing with Networking drinks & Nibbles. \nFree Tickets Available for SPE Student Chapter Members\nSPE WA\, in conjunction with our sponsors\, is kindly sponsoring SPE Student Chapter Members to attend the monthly technical events. SUMMARY:Non-Intrusive Well and Reservoir Surveillance Solutions using Chemical Tracers for Improved Reservoir Management
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the first Technical Evening Meeting of 2023. \nAbout the Presentation\nTracer technology offers a powerful means for conducting production and reservoir surveillance\, which is both operationally simple to deploy\, cost-effective and can measure flow properties less than one metre to ten’s of kilometres between wells. Surveillance using tracer solutions truly provide continuous multi-scale monitoring from a well to a reservoir scale.  It utilizes flow through porous media and pipe flow in wells as the telemetry method to transport the signals to the sampling point. Therefore\, tracer technology is a viable alternative as the permanent monitoring technology of choice for well surveillance in today’s field developments\, and it is a risk-free solution from both planning and deployment perspectives. \nIn terms of reservoir surveillance\, inter well tracers not only provide an understanding of the preferential flow paths between injectors and production wells on a field wide scale\, they also provide a method of understanding reservoir connectivity\, verifying suspected flow barriers\, characterizing flood patterns\, estimating residual oil saturations between wells and analyzing the effects of volumetric sweep efficiency. More recently\, interwell tracers have been used to monitor leakage from CO2 storage reservoirs and used in carbon accounting practices. Inflow tracing is designed to evaluate near wellbore flow performance such as verifying clean up\, identifying the location of water/gas breakthrough over time and quantifying flow. \nThe co-implementation of both tracer technologies in the early stage of waterflood or EOR development offers unique ability to monitor wells/reservoir\, eliminating the need for expensive and time-consuming wireline interventions and overcome any wellsite logistics challenges.  An increased adoption of integrating inter well and inflow tracer interpretation can reduce uncertainty in history matching well/reservoir models and thus improve reservoir management strategies using assisted history matching tools or optimisers based on results obtained from the tracer signal responses. \nThis presentation will discuss tracer project conceptualization\, design\, analysis workflow and implementation of combining inflow and interwell tracers. \nAbout the Speaker – Edmund Leung\nEdmund Leung is currently the Senior Technology Advisor with RESMAN\, based in Perth\, Australia since June 2022. He was previously Vice President for Well Technology leading the RESMAN flow-related interpretation and R&D team\, based in Trondheim in Norway. \nHe earned an Honors degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of New South Wales in Sydney\, Australia\, graduating in 1995. SUMMARY:SPE Distinguished Lecturer Webinar - Rigs as Reefs: Re-imagining Our Energy Past as our Eco-Friendly Future
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA is proud to present the details of the November SPE Distinguished Lecturer Webinar. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nIncreasingly\, the world’s offshore oil and gas platforms are transitioning into aging relics\, leftover designs from an era in hot pursuit of developing and extracting the world’s offshore oil reserves\, with little thought given to their eventual removal. However\, as the global economy has begun to shift away from traditional energy resources (i.e.\, oil and gas) towards renewables (i.e.\, wind\, wave\, and solar energy)\, the removal of many offshore structures has become inevitable\, and the technical\, economic\, and environmental implications associated with their decommissioning must now be addressed. Many of these platforms are home to some of the most productive ecosystems on the planet\, making decommissioning via complete removal and onshore disposal environmentally detrimental\, and needlessly expensive. Repurposing an object\, which was once environmentally taxing\, into something sustainable and environmentally friendly is inherently fresh\, and perhaps most critically\, timely. This lecture will shed light on how scientists\, operators and regulators are beginning to think creatively about our ocean resources\, and radically changing the way society views ocean conservation. By examining several case studies\, ranging from traditional fixed platforms to floating facilities to subsea infrastructure in the super deep sea\, this lecture will demonstrate the ecological\, social\, and economic benefits of repurposing oil and gas infrastructure as marine habitats. Ultimately\, this lecture will demonstrate to members how implementing Rigs to Reef programs globally provides not only a viable alternative to traditional decommissioning but also a replicable\, scalable and significantly more commercially viable solution which can catalyze sustainable ocean resource development. \n\nAbout the Speaker – Emily Hazelwood\nEmily is a marine conservation biologist and co-founder of Blue Latitudes\, a women-owned marine environmental consulting firm\, where she works to unite science\, policy\, and innovative technology to solve the complex ecological challenges associated with re-purposing offshore oil and gas platforms as artificial reefs through the Rigs to Reefs program. She has a B.A. in Environmental Science from Connecticut College and an M.A.S in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In 2018\, Emily was recognized on the Forbes 30 Under 30 (entrepreneurs) list for her work developing sustainable\, creative\, and cost-effective solutions for the offshore energy industry. \n\nWebinar Registration\nDate:              Tuesday\, 1st of November 2022 \nTime:              07:00 pm – 8:00 pm

SUMMARY:19th October 2022 SPE WA Technical Meeting – An Independent Perspective on CCS in the UK
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of the October 2022 Technical Evening Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nThe presentation aims to outline the rapidly evolving CCS opportunity in the UK from the perspective of an independent\, integrated consultancy working closely with government and industry. This has been a journey to promote and evaluate the national CCS resource\, repurpose high-value infrastructure assets\, licence and commercialize underground carbon storage projects against the backdrop of a mature offshore hydrocarbon basin\, acute national energy security challenges and net zero commitments. \nA chronological account of CCS in the UK is provided\, dating back to around 2006\, highlighting roadblocks encountered\, as well as the emerging industry objectives and drivers that have brought us to the present day. Insight is afforded into opportunity maturation\, the current status of projects and their regulation. The changing nature of the consultancy business and the transfer of skills between traditional oil and gas\, and increasingly towards low carbon\, in response to industry trends\, is summarised. \nThe talk draws on experience gained in the UK CCS sector\, with a focus on key technical risks and known success factors\, making use of case studies where possible. It follows the pathway toward commercialisation of several distinct types of offshore storage assets – saline aquifer and depleted gas field – highlighting pertinent considerations for both. \nIt will review workflows developed and successfully applied in the UK to screen and select offshore CCS stores\, from within existing portfolios or from strategic acreage allocated by the authorities. Finally\, it outlines the approaches taken to mature short-listed projects through detailed subsurface evaluation and multi-disciplinary integration arriving at FID ready storage site development plans and will further highlight available resources from within the public domain. \nThe presentation will appeal to the sensibilities of the petroleum engineer\, or geoscientist\, who will readily identify parallels to their own skill-set and daily work activities in oil and gas.  Workflows revealed and lessons learned might be adopted in Australia and indeed elsewhere in view of current and future CCS assets and/or projects. \nAbout the Speaker – Shaun Bambridge\nShaun Bambridge is a WA-based Senior Reservoir Engineer with Axis\, an independent consultancy headquartered in Aberdeen\, UK. He has almost two decades of international oil and gas industry experience that includes deployments for Operator\, E&P and Oilfield Service company across Australia\, Europe\, Africa and the Middle-East. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of WA and a Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College London. \nFounded in 2001\, Axis have been closely involved with CCS in the UK since 2015\, with Shaun being part of a broader multi-disciplinary team working on CCS scopes since that time. This includes CCS due diligence\, license acquisition and portfolio screening through to subsurface evaluation\, site select and storage development planning. Axis is currently involved in several commercial-scale CCS projects\, pilot planning and the UK’s first ever CCS licensing round. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $40 <Until the 11 Oct 2022>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $60 <Until the 11 Oct 2022>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Wednesday\, 19 October 2022 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             16:45 am – 17:00 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             17:00 pm – 17:10 pm SPE WA Opening Marks.\nTime:             17:10 pm – 17:45 pm Presentation.\nTime:             17:45 pm – 18:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             18:00 pm – 19:30 pm Closing with Networking drinks & Nibbles. \nFree Tickets Available for SPE Student Chapter Members\nSPE WA\, in conjunction with our sponsors\, is kindly sponsoring SPE Student Chapter Members to attend the monthly technical events. SUMMARY:From Ambition to Reality 2

We might not even get halfway. We must radically rethink the way we design\, build\, and work together. \n“From Ambition to Reality 2: Measuring change in the race to net zero” is the next instalment of Worley and Princeton University’s Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment’s ground-breaking series. Our first paper showed that achieving net zero is technically feasible\, but there’s an immense infrastructure delivery challenge to get there.  This paper builds on the five key shifts in infrastructure delivery and explores how to convert this thinking into action in the critical period through to 2030.  It outlines 15 leading indicators of change that will enable industry and governments to evaluate\, adjust\, and correct infrastructure delivery practices to meet the challenge of scale and speed that mid-century net zero demands.  We also discuss the initial results of the Net Zero Australia project being undertaken by the University of Queensland and Melbourne. \nSo how do we untangle the threads of the net-zero transition to weave a new delivery paradigm? Explore how a framework for measurement against the paradigm shifts is required for accelerated delivery. \nhttps://www.worley.com/our-thinking/from-ambition-to-reality \n  \nAbout the Presenter\nClare Anderson is the Director of Sustainability Performance for Worley and is passionate about the decarbonisation of the energy\, chemical and resources industries. SUMMARY:Methane Emissions: Our Obligation and Our Opportunity in the Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA is proud to present the details of the August 2022 SPE Distinguished Lecturer Webinar. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe world has entered an energy transition where the future role of energy sources will depend partially on their greenhouse gas footprint.  While that transition is expected to take a generation\, some changes will occur quickly.  One of the fastest ways to combat climate change is to reduce emissions of methane\, not carbon dioxide.  Methane is the main component of natural gas and a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.  The oil and gas industry handles a large quantity of methane\, and a small amount of that methane leaks to the atmosphere.  Because methane is such a potent greenhouse gas\, those emissions are small in volume but large in environmental impact: methane is the dominant source of our industry’s direct greenhouse gas emissions\, above other sources like flaring.  This lecture describes the main sources of methane emissions\, the market and political drivers to reduce methane emissions\, and the new technologies being developed to find and fix methane leaks. \n\nAbout the Speaker – Drew Pomerantz\nAndrew (Drew) E. Pomerantz is an Energy Transition Technology Advisor at Schlumberger\, based in Boston\, Massachusetts.  He focuses on new technologies that reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions from the upstream and midstream oil and gas industry\, particularly novel methods to detect fugitive methane emissions.  Drew graduated from Stanford University with a PhD in chemistry in 2005 and has co-authored 100 peer-reviewed publications and 25 granted US patents.  He founded the Boston chapter of the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA). \n\nWebinar registration:\nPlease REGISTER HERE via the SPE Distinguished Lecture link below. \n

SUMMARY:A Survival Guide for Digital Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our July SPE Distinguished Lecturer Technical Evening Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nWhen organizations everywhere are racing to embrace Digital Transformation\, it is easy to get excited about the claimed possibilities and to overlook the fundamentals.  It is also unclear what this will mean for most of us\, our organizations and employment prospects.  Hence it is reasonable to ponder and assess our readiness for these changes and the opportunities they may bring. \nDigital Transformation arguably began a long time ago.  It was in the late 1980s that just about everyone in the oil and gas industry started using computers.  These were first introduced as “productivity tools” in support of conventional work.  With the benefit of experience and technological progress\, organizations have evolved new workflows.  Today\, Information Technology projects are increasingly seen as corporate gamechangers. \nIn this lecture\, an experienced geoscientist offers his take on what Digital Transformation may mean\, and suggests how to prepare to ride the wave and succeed.  Specific topics will include the need for a reliable data inventory\, pre-requisites for the integration of multiple data sets and for the rigorous quantification of uncertainty.  All these can be implemented without disruption\, at low incremental cost and great potential value to all parties. \nThe main takeaway point is that regardless of what Digital Transformation turns out to be\, some actions should be taken now rather than later to ready the organization.  These actions all revolve around the systematic consolidation of specific data fundamentals.  In the process\, the people involved will also become better prepared and more valuable to their organization. \nAbout the Speaker – Martin Storey\nMartin Storey is an independent practising Petrophysicist with over three decades of international experience combining field operations and the acquisition\, integrated exploitation and management of well data.  He consults and delivers training programs in these areas.  He is a long-active member of the SPE and other associations including the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA) and the Professional Petroleum Data Management Association (PPDM).  He was an SPWLA Distinguished Lecturer in 2019 and 2020\, and received that society’s Distinguished Service Award in 2020. He has a BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science from Stanford University\, and an MSc in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $40 <Until the 22 July 2022>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $60 <Until the 22 July 2022>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Thursday\, 28 July 2022 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             16:45 am – 17:00 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             17:00 pm – 17:10 pm SPE WA Opening Marks.\nTime:             17:10 pm – 17:45 pm Presentation.\nTime:             17:45 pm – 18:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             18:00 pm – 19:30 pm Closing with Networking drinks & Nibbles. \nPlease notice the tickets sale is limited and be hurry to lock in your ticket. SUMMARY:Making Better Upstream Acquisitions: The Role of the Petroleum Engineer and Why its Different From the Day Job
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our June SPE Distinguished Lecturer Technical Evening Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nGlobal upstream transactions are estimated at nearly $200 bn in 2021. Production/cost forecasts and assessment of future opportunities/risks are crucial inputs to the economic evaluation of a potential acquisition. It follows that potential buyers need to conduct technical due diligence on these inputs. In times of volatile oil and gas prices\, good technical due diligence can be the difference between a good and a bad deal. \nPetroleum engineers are often called upon to join acquisition teams. With typically a few days/weeks of evaluation time\, technical due diligence requires considerable focus and a fundamentally different approach to the typical industry workflow. Yet\, there are no industry courses on this subject and a OnePetro search reveals the last paper was 30 years ago. \nThis talk highlights how a Petroleum Engineer should approach working in an upstream acquisitions team and illustrates practical methods for conducting technical due diligence. A ‘top down’ process that starts with identifying what drives value is proposed. Several case studies are presented showing how good technical due diligence has had a fundamental impact on acquisition decisions. \nThe key messages are that technical due diligence requires a very different approach from the Petroleum Engineer’s ‘day job’ and that it pays. \nAbout the Speaker – Geoff Salter\nGeoff Salter is a Partner at RISC Advisory specializing in Reservoir Engineering. He holds an MSc in Petroleum Engineering. His early industry experience was focused on field development and production operations with major operators Shell and Woodside. During his 25 years at RISC Advisory based in London or Perth\, he has led technical due diligence teams on oil and gas acquisition opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region\, Europe\, Middle East and Africa. He has travelled extensively throughout these regions\, presented at industry conferences and participated in SPE ATWs. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $40 <Until the 17 June 2022>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $60 <Until the 17 June 2022>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Tuesday\, 21 June 2022 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             16:45 am – 17:00 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             17:00 pm – 17:10 pm SPE WA Opening Marks.\nTime:             17:10 pm – 17:45 pm Presentation.\nTime:             17:45 pm – 18:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             18:00 pm – 19:30 pm Closing with Networking drinks & Nibbles. \nPlease notice the tickets sale is limited and be hurry to lock in your ticket. CO2 is a different fluid and\, when released\, behaves differently to a hydrocarbon gas\, such as methane. \nLike hydrocarbon releases\, a CO2 release can affect people caught in the dispersing cloud and may pose fatality risk (depending on CO2 concentrations and exposure durations).  Nevertheless\, safety risks associated with CO2 projects can be reduced to levels comparable to (or lower than) that of well-designed hydrocarbon facilities by understanding the hazards associated with CO2 and adhering to inherently safer design principles and risk-based approach. \nThis presentation will look at how CO2 release behaviour is different from hydrocarbon gas behaviour\, the hazards CO2 release poses to nearby populations\, and potential ways to minimise the risk. The current state of CO2 release modelling tools\, and the uncertainties/challenges that exist\, will also be discussed\, along with ways to overcome them \n\nAbout the Speaker \nDr Marina Karyagina is a Principal Safety and Risk Engineer from Advisian/Worley. Marina has been working in the area of technical safety and risk on offshore and pipeline projects for more than 20 years. Recently\, she has been involved in a project related to CO2 transport via subsea pipeline and offshore re-injection. \n\nAbout the Event\nPrice:             SPE Member $10\nPrice:             Non-Member $15\nPrice:             Bring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nPrice:             Add your friend’s name to the field “Attendee Names” on the checkout page. \nDate:              Tuesday\, 14th of June 2022 \nLocation:      Riff Spacecubed\nLocation:      45 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime:              5:00 pm – 5:15pm SPE WA Opening\nTime:              5:15 pm – 6:00 pm Presentation\nTime:              6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles \nAs per government requirements\, proof of at minimum double vaccination is required to enter the venue.

SUMMARY:Hydrogen - The Hype and The Reality
DESCRIPTION:SPE Western Australia is pleased to announce the May Facilities Group Event led by Martin Wilkes\, Managing Director at RISC. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nWith the number of “hy” profile announcements over the past year or so\, you could be forgiven for thinking that the hydrogen economy is just around the corner and ready to go. However\, as many R&D teams know the pathway to commercialisation traverses the technology “valley of death”\, which is littered with the skeletons of failed enterprises. Whilst hydrogen clearly has the significant advantage of not releasing CO2 when combusted there are many other factors that need to be addressed before the hydrogen economy becomes a reality. \nThis talk will discuss the current status of hydrogen\, look at the pathways to a hydrogen economy and discuss what the impacts might be. \n\nAbout the Speaker \nMartin Wilkes is the Managing Director of RISC\, an independent international energy advisory company headquartered in Perth\, Western Australia. \nMartin is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Environmentalist. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and a Member of the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN). He has a Master of Engineering Degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK \nMartin has worked in the energy industry for over 30 years\, holding a range of international positions including project development\, business leadership and planning\, corporate governance\, and technical training. Since joining RISC in 2010 he has provided advice to clients on hundreds of projects\, including over 30% of the world’s LNG projects\, and several multi-billion-dollar transactions. \n\nAbout the Event\nPrice:             SPE Member $10\nPrice:             Non-Member $15\nPrice:             Bring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nPrice:             Add your friend’s name to the field “Attendee Names” on the checkout page. \nDate:              Tuesday\, 10th of May 2022 \nLocation:      Base @FLUX\nLocation:      191 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime:              4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration and Networking\nTime:              5:00 pm – 5:45 pm Presentation and Q&A Session\nTime:              5:45 pm – 6:45 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles \nAs per government requirements\, proof of at minimum double vaccination is required to enter the venue.
