SUMMARY:SPE Distinguished Lecturer Webinar - Rigs as Reefs: Re-imagining Our Energy Past as our Eco-Friendly Future
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA is proud to present the details of the November SPE Distinguished Lecturer Webinar. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nIncreasingly\, the world’s offshore oil and gas platforms are transitioning into aging relics\, leftover designs from an era in hot pursuit of developing and extracting the world’s offshore oil reserves\, with little thought given to their eventual removal. However\, as the global economy has begun to shift away from traditional energy resources (i.e.\, oil and gas) towards renewables (i.e.\, wind\, wave\, and solar energy)\, the removal of many offshore structures has become inevitable\, and the technical\, economic\, and environmental implications associated with their decommissioning must now be addressed. Many of these platforms are home to some of the most productive ecosystems on the planet\, making decommissioning via complete removal and onshore disposal environmentally detrimental\, and needlessly expensive. Repurposing an object\, which was once environmentally taxing\, into something sustainable and environmentally friendly is inherently fresh\, and perhaps most critically\, timely. This lecture will shed light on how scientists\, operators and regulators are beginning to think creatively about our ocean resources\, and radically changing the way society views ocean conservation. By examining several case studies\, ranging from traditional fixed platforms to floating facilities to subsea infrastructure in the super deep sea\, this lecture will demonstrate the ecological\, social\, and economic benefits of repurposing oil and gas infrastructure as marine habitats. Ultimately\, this lecture will demonstrate to members how implementing Rigs to Reef programs globally provides not only a viable alternative to traditional decommissioning but also a replicable\, scalable and significantly more commercially viable solution which can catalyze sustainable ocean resource development. \n\nAbout the Speaker – Emily Hazelwood\nEmily is a marine conservation biologist and co-founder of Blue Latitudes\, a women-owned marine environmental consulting firm\, where she works to unite science\, policy\, and innovative technology to solve the complex ecological challenges associated with re-purposing offshore oil and gas platforms as artificial reefs through the Rigs to Reefs program. She has a B.A. in Environmental Science from Connecticut College and an M.A.S in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In 2018\, Emily was recognized on the Forbes 30 Under 30 (entrepreneurs) list for her work developing sustainable\, creative\, and cost-effective solutions for the offshore energy industry. \n\nWebinar Registration\nDate:              Tuesday\, 1st of November 2022 \nTime:              07:00 pm – 8:00 pm

SUMMARY:19th October 2022 SPE WA Technical Meeting – An Independent Perspective on CCS in the UK
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of the October 2022 Technical Evening Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nThe presentation aims to outline the rapidly evolving CCS opportunity in the UK from the perspective of an independent\, integrated consultancy working closely with government and industry. This has been a journey to promote and evaluate the national CCS resource\, repurpose high-value infrastructure assets\, licence and commercialize underground carbon storage projects against the backdrop of a mature offshore hydrocarbon basin\, acute national energy security challenges and net zero commitments. \nA chronological account of CCS in the UK is provided\, dating back to around 2006\, highlighting roadblocks encountered\, as well as the emerging industry objectives and drivers that have brought us to the present day. Insight is afforded into opportunity maturation\, the current status of projects and their regulation. The changing nature of the consultancy business and the transfer of skills between traditional oil and gas\, and increasingly towards low carbon\, in response to industry trends\, is summarised. \nThe talk draws on experience gained in the UK CCS sector\, with a focus on key technical risks and known success factors\, making use of case studies where possible. It follows the pathway toward commercialisation of several distinct types of offshore storage assets – saline aquifer and depleted gas field – highlighting pertinent considerations for both. \nIt will review workflows developed and successfully applied in the UK to screen and select offshore CCS stores\, from within existing portfolios or from strategic acreage allocated by the authorities. Finally\, it outlines the approaches taken to mature short-listed projects through detailed subsurface evaluation and multi-disciplinary integration arriving at FID ready storage site development plans and will further highlight available resources from within the public domain. \nThe presentation will appeal to the sensibilities of the petroleum engineer\, or geoscientist\, who will readily identify parallels to their own skill-set and daily work activities in oil and gas.  Workflows revealed and lessons learned might be adopted in Australia and indeed elsewhere in view of current and future CCS assets and/or projects. \nAbout the Speaker – Shaun Bambridge\nShaun Bambridge is a WA-based Senior Reservoir Engineer with Axis\, an independent consultancy headquartered in Aberdeen\, UK. He has almost two decades of international oil and gas industry experience that includes deployments for Operator\, E&P and Oilfield Service company across Australia\, Europe\, Africa and the Middle-East. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of WA and a Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College London. \nFounded in 2001\, Axis have been closely involved with CCS in the UK since 2015\, with Shaun being part of a broader multi-disciplinary team working on CCS scopes since that time. This includes CCS due diligence\, license acquisition and portfolio screening through to subsurface evaluation\, site select and storage development planning. Axis is currently involved in several commercial-scale CCS projects\, pilot planning and the UK’s first ever CCS licensing round. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $40 <Until the 11 Oct 2022>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $60 <Until the 11 Oct 2022>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Wednesday\, 19 October 2022 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             16:45 am – 17:00 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             17:00 pm – 17:10 pm SPE WA Opening Marks.\nTime:             17:10 pm – 17:45 pm Presentation.\nTime:             17:45 pm – 18:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             18:00 pm – 19:30 pm Closing with Networking drinks & Nibbles. \nFree Tickets Available for SPE Student Chapter Members\nSPE WA\, in conjunction with our sponsors\, is kindly sponsoring SPE Student Chapter Members to attend the monthly technical events. We might not even get halfway. We must radically rethink the way we design\, build\, and work together. \n“From Ambition to Reality 2: Measuring change in the race to net zero” is the next instalment of Worley and Princeton University’s Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment’s ground-breaking series. Our first paper showed that achieving net zero is technically feasible\, but there’s an immense infrastructure delivery challenge to get there.  This paper builds on the five key shifts in infrastructure delivery and explores how to convert this thinking into action in the critical period through to 2030.  It outlines 15 leading indicators of change that will enable industry and governments to evaluate\, adjust\, and correct infrastructure delivery practices to meet the challenge of scale and speed that mid-century net zero demands.  We also discuss the initial results of the Net Zero Australia project being undertaken by the University of Queensland and Melbourne. \nSo how do we untangle the threads of the net-zero transition to weave a new delivery paradigm? Explore how a framework for measurement against the paradigm shifts is required for accelerated delivery. \nhttps://www.worley.com/our-thinking/from-ambition-to-reality \n  \nAbout the Presenter\nClare Anderson is the Director of Sustainability Performance for Worley and is passionate about the decarbonisation of the energy\, chemical and resources industries. She stewards Worley to meet the commitments made in our Climate Change Position Statement\, embedding sustainability in the way we operate our business and deliver services to our customers. \nClare has a PhD in Chemical Engineering\, specifically relating to the adaptation of low carbon technologies. She has over two decades of project and engineering management experience and is an experienced leader of large technical teams. Her experience spans all phases of project development from concept development through to detailed design\, construction\, and operation. She also has considerable experience working in Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs). \nClare has delivered major energy infrastructure projects in Europe\, South Africa\, and Australia. SUMMARY:Methane Emissions: Our Obligation and Our Opportunity in the Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA is proud to present the details of the August 2022 SPE Distinguished Lecturer Webinar. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe world has entered an energy transition where the future role of energy sources will depend partially on their greenhouse gas footprint.  While that transition is expected to take a generation\, some changes will occur quickly.  One of the fastest ways to combat climate change is to reduce emissions of methane\, not carbon dioxide.  Methane is the main component of natural gas and a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.  The oil and gas industry handles a large quantity of methane\, and a small amount of that methane leaks to the atmosphere.  Because methane is such a potent greenhouse gas\, those emissions are small in volume but large in environmental impact: methane is the dominant source of our industry’s direct greenhouse gas emissions\, above other sources like flaring.  This lecture describes the main sources of methane emissions\, the market and political drivers to reduce methane emissions\, and the new technologies being developed to find and fix methane leaks. \n\nAbout the Speaker – Drew Pomerantz\nAndrew (Drew) E. Pomerantz is an Energy Transition Technology Advisor at Schlumberger\, based in Boston\, Massachusetts.  He focuses on new technologies that reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions from the upstream and midstream oil and gas industry\, particularly novel methods to detect fugitive methane emissions.  Drew graduated from Stanford University with a PhD in chemistry in 2005 and has co-authored 100 peer-reviewed publications and 25 granted US patents.  He founded the Boston chapter of the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA). \n\nWebinar registration:\nPlease REGISTER HERE via the SPE Distinguished Lecture link below. \n

SUMMARY:A Survival Guide for Digital Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our July SPE Distinguished Lecturer Technical Evening Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nWhen organizations everywhere are racing to embrace Digital Transformation\, it is easy to get excited about the claimed possibilities and to overlook the fundamentals.  It is also unclear what this will mean for most of us\, our organizations and employment prospects.  Hence it is reasonable to ponder and assess our readiness for these changes and the opportunities they may bring. \nDigital Transformation arguably began a long time ago.  It was in the late 1980s that just about everyone in the oil and gas industry started using computers.  These were first introduced as “productivity tools” in support of conventional work.  With the benefit of experience and technological progress\, organizations have evolved new workflows.  Today\, Information Technology projects are increasingly seen as corporate gamechangers. \nIn this lecture\, an experienced geoscientist offers his take on what Digital Transformation may mean\, and suggests how to prepare to ride the wave and succeed.  Specific topics will include the need for a reliable data inventory\, pre-requisites for the integration of multiple data sets and for the rigorous quantification of uncertainty.  All these can be implemented without disruption\, at low incremental cost and great potential value to all parties. \nThe main takeaway point is that regardless of what Digital Transformation turns out to be\, some actions should be taken now rather than later to ready the organization.  These actions all revolve around the systematic consolidation of specific data fundamentals.  In the process\, the people involved will also become better prepared and more valuable to their organization. \nAbout the Speaker – Martin Storey\nMartin Storey is an independent practising Petrophysicist with over three decades of international experience combining field operations and the acquisition\, integrated exploitation and management of well data.  He consults and delivers training programs in these areas.  He is a long-active member of the SPE and other associations including the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA) and the Professional Petroleum Data Management Association (PPDM).  He was an SPWLA Distinguished Lecturer in 2019 and 2020\, and received that society’s Distinguished Service Award in 2020. He has a BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science from Stanford University\, and an MSc in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $40 <Until the 22 July 2022>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $60 <Until the 22 July 2022>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Thursday\, 28 July 2022 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             16:45 am – 17:00 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             17:00 pm – 17:10 pm SPE WA Opening Marks.\nTime:             17:10 pm – 17:45 pm Presentation.\nTime:             17:45 pm – 18:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             18:00 pm – 19:30 pm Closing with Networking drinks & Nibbles. \nPlease notice the tickets sale is limited and be hurry to lock in your ticket. SUMMARY:Making Better Upstream Acquisitions: The Role of the Petroleum Engineer and Why its Different From the Day Job
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our June SPE Distinguished Lecturer Technical Evening Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nGlobal upstream transactions are estimated at nearly $200 bn in 2021. Production/cost forecasts and assessment of future opportunities/risks are crucial inputs to the economic evaluation of a potential acquisition. It follows that potential buyers need to conduct technical due diligence on these inputs. In times of volatile oil and gas prices\, good technical due diligence can be the difference between a good and a bad deal. \nPetroleum engineers are often called upon to join acquisition teams. With typically a few days/weeks of evaluation time\, technical due diligence requires considerable focus and a fundamentally different approach to the typical industry workflow. Yet\, there are no industry courses on this subject and a OnePetro search reveals the last paper was 30 years ago. \nThis talk highlights how a Petroleum Engineer should approach working in an upstream acquisitions team and illustrates practical methods for conducting technical due diligence. A ‘top down’ process that starts with identifying what drives value is proposed. Several case studies are presented showing how good technical due diligence has had a fundamental impact on acquisition decisions. \nThe key messages are that technical due diligence requires a very different approach from the Petroleum Engineer’s ‘day job’ and that it pays. \nAbout the Speaker – Geoff Salter\nGeoff Salter is a Partner at RISC Advisory specializing in Reservoir Engineering. He holds an MSc in Petroleum Engineering. His early industry experience was focused on field development and production operations with major operators Shell and Woodside. During his 25 years at RISC Advisory based in London or Perth\, he has led technical due diligence teams on oil and gas acquisition opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region\, Europe\, Middle East and Africa. He has travelled extensively throughout these regions\, presented at industry conferences and participated in SPE ATWs. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $40 <Until the 17 June 2022>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $60 <Until the 17 June 2022>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Tuesday\, 21 June 2022 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             16:45 am – 17:00 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             17:00 pm – 17:10 pm SPE WA Opening Marks.\nTime:             17:10 pm – 17:45 pm Presentation.\nTime:             17:45 pm – 18:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             18:00 pm – 19:30 pm Closing with Networking drinks & Nibbles. \nPlease notice the tickets sale is limited and be hurry to lock in your ticket. SUMMARY:Designing Safe Carbon Capture Usage & Storage (CCUS) Facilities
DESCRIPTION:SPE Western Australia is pleased to present Dr Marina Karyagina\, Principal Safety and Risk Engineer at Advisian\, for the June Facilities Group Technical Evening. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe petroleum processing industry is well equipped and experienced in minimizing risk from major accident events associated with releases of hydrocarbons. CO2 is a different fluid and\, when released\, behaves differently to a hydrocarbon gas\, such as methane. \nLike hydrocarbon releases\, a CO2 release can affect people caught in the dispersing cloud and may pose fatality risk (depending on CO2 concentrations and exposure durations).  Nevertheless\, safety risks associated with CO2 projects can be reduced to levels comparable to (or lower than) that of well-designed hydrocarbon facilities by understanding the hazards associated with CO2 and adhering to inherently safer design principles and risk-based approach. \nThis presentation will look at how CO2 release behaviour is different from hydrocarbon gas behaviour\, the hazards CO2 release poses to nearby populations\, and potential ways to minimise the risk. The current state of CO2 release modelling tools\, and the uncertainties/challenges that exist\, will also be discussed\, along with ways to overcome them \n\nAbout the Speaker \nDr Marina Karyagina is a Principal Safety and Risk Engineer from Advisian/Worley. Marina has been working in the area of technical safety and risk on offshore and pipeline projects for more than 20 years. Recently\, she has been involved in a project related to CO2 transport via subsea pipeline and offshore re-injection. \n\nAbout the Event\nPrice:             SPE Member $10\nPrice:             Non-Member $15\nPrice:             Bring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nPrice:             Add your friend’s name to the field “Attendee Names” on the checkout page. \nDate:              Tuesday\, 14th of June 2022 \nLocation:      Riff Spacecubed\nLocation:      45 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime:              5:00 pm – 5:15pm SPE WA Opening\nTime:              5:15 pm – 6:00 pm Presentation\nTime:              6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles \nAs per government requirements\, proof of at minimum double vaccination is required to enter the venue.

SUMMARY:Hydrogen - The Hype and The Reality
DESCRIPTION:SPE Western Australia is pleased to announce the May Facilities Group Event led by Martin Wilkes\, Managing Director at RISC. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nWith the number of “hy” profile announcements over the past year or so\, you could be forgiven for thinking that the hydrogen economy is just around the corner and ready to go. However\, as many R&D teams know the pathway to commercialisation traverses the technology “valley of death”\, which is littered with the skeletons of failed enterprises. Whilst hydrogen clearly has the significant advantage of not releasing CO2 when combusted there are many other factors that need to be addressed before the hydrogen economy becomes a reality. \nThis talk will discuss the current status of hydrogen\, look at the pathways to a hydrogen economy and discuss what the impacts might be. \n\nAbout the Speaker \nMartin Wilkes is the Managing Director of RISC\, an independent international energy advisory company headquartered in Perth\, Western Australia. \nMartin is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Environmentalist. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and a Member of the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN). He has a Master of Engineering Degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK \nMartin has worked in the energy industry for over 30 years\, holding a range of international positions including project development\, business leadership and planning\, corporate governance\, and technical training. Since joining RISC in 2010 he has provided advice to clients on hundreds of projects\, including over 30% of the world’s LNG projects\, and several multi-billion-dollar transactions. \n\nAbout the Event\nPrice:             SPE Member $10\nPrice:             Non-Member $15\nPrice:             Bring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nPrice:             Add your friend’s name to the field “Attendee Names” on the checkout page. \nDate:              Tuesday\, 10th of May 2022 \nLocation:      Base @FLUX\nLocation:      191 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime:              4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration and Networking\nTime:              5:00 pm – 5:45 pm Presentation and Q&A Session\nTime:              5:45 pm – 6:45 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles \nAs per government requirements\, proof of at minimum double vaccination is required to enter the venue.

SUMMARY:SPE Distinguished Lecturer - How To Design A Good Reservoir Model
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our April Technical Luncheon Meeting from our SPE Distinguished Lecturer Mark Bentley. \nAbout the Presentation\nThe difference between good models and bad models is an issue of model design. How can you tell the difference between a ‘good’ reservoir model and a ‘bad’ one? \nReservoir and simulation modelling capability has become a mainstream activity in petroleum engineering yet the models themselves often tend to disappoint.  Crucially\, models and forecasts tend to be optimistic. \nThis talk draws on experiences accumulated over the last 25 years from working with international and national oil companies\, and draws out common themes – reasons why some modelling and simulation outcomes are ‘good’\, and others are ‘bad’. The over-riding theme is model design\, and it will be argued that many of the errors in modelling are made before anyone logs on.  It’s not the capability of the software\, it’s the design choices made. \nThe following design issues will be identified and optimal approaches recommended\, concerning: \n\nmodel purpose\, and the balance of simplicity vs. complexity in modelling\nimperfect data and concept-based modelling – “if you can sketch it\, you can model it”\ntaking a fluid-centric view of the need for detail: reservoir modelling\, rather than\ngeological modelling;\nthe scale transition\, searching for the ‘lost heterogeneity’\n\nThe points above will be illustrated with a case study from a mature oil field undergoing waterflood\, in which a decision on infill drilling needed to be made. \nAbout the Speaker – Mark Bentley\nMark has been in the industry since 1986\, initially as a production geologist with Shell where he first started learning about reservoir modelling.  He has spent the subsequent 22 years training and consulting around the world with colleagues at TRACS.  His specialist technical fields are reservoir modelling and scenario-based approaches to handling uncertainty. \nMark is a frequent contributor at conferences and co-author of the textbook ‘Reservoir Model Design’. In 2018 he took up the Chair in Mature Field Management at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $30 <Until the 22nd April 2022>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $50 <Until the 22nd April 2022>\n                       SPE Member                          $40\n                       Non-Member                          $60 \nDate:              Thursday\, 28th April 2022 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             11:45 am – 12:15 pm Registration with Networking & Food.\nTime:             12:15 pm – 12:20 pm SPE WA Opening Marks.\nTime:             12:20 pm – 12:55 pm Presentation.\nTime:             12:55 pm – 13:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             13:00 pm – 13:15 pm Closing with Networking. \nPlease notice the tickets sale is limited and be hurry to lock in your ticket. SUMMARY:Impact of Climate Issues on Energy Industry Through 2050
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA is proud to present the details of the February 2022 SPE Distinguished Lecturer Webinar. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe world population\, energy companies\, industry associations\, professional societies and most policy makers increasingly view climate change and Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) as an existential threat to a sustainable future.  Demands to “decarbonize” energy grow rapidly and pose a serious challenge to the energy industry. \nThis presentation (1) summarizes the need for oil and gas as a worldwide energy source at mid-century and beyond\, (2) highlights ideas of several key thinkers regarding climate issues\, (3) describes the range of activities beyond “pure climate science” needed to address AGW\, and (4) highlights industry activities addressing AGW including strategies to get to “zero net emissions” by mid-century. \nThe author challenges industry leaders and professionals to avoid thinking “We are not climate scientists” as a barrier to engaging proactively in addressing climate issues. Broad systems analyses are needed to develop energy solutions – working across the nexus of the realms of energy\, environment\, and economics.  SPE’s Technical Disciplines\, as professionals working in energy\, can contribute a broad range of energy expertise needed to address AGW.  We must be proactive in engaging the worldwide community – earn trust as serious solutions providers. \nA political leader in climate policy offered a message to energy industry leaders: “If you don’t have a seat at the table (influencing policy)\, you will be part of the meal.”  The author adds a quote by Von Karmen – “Scientists discover the world that exists; engineers create the world that never was.”  The world needs energy professionals such as in SPE to claim a seat at the table along side of the climate scientists to solve climate challenges. \n\nAbout the Speaker – Philip Grossweiler\nPhil retired from ExxonMobil after 25 years in Production\, Development\, and Research Companies with assignments in engineering\, project management\, breakthrough research\, and corporate planning.  He consults at M&H Energy Services on Risk Management and LNG projects. His perspectives on climate policy and energy are based\, in part\, on work on staff of a Member of U.S. Congress and as Chair of an advisory committee to the U.S. Secretary of Energy for energy R&D Programs. He holds MS Degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in Marine Engineering from U.S. Coast Guard Academy.  He Chairs SPE’s Sustainable Development Technical Section and Co-Chairs SPE’s Climate Advisory Committee. \n\nWebinar registration:\nPlease register via the SPE Distinguished Lecture link below.

SUMMARY:Automation and Data Analytics in the O&G industry
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our Jan 2022 Technical Evening Meeting. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nConstant change is occurring in industry and society. The advent of ‘smart’ technologies is changing our lives\, and we have to deal with the buzz words of ‘automation’\, ‘data analytics’\, ‘machine language’\, ‘block chain’ and ‘Python’. But what does it all mean for today’s petroleum engineer and why now? All engineers are natural data analysists\, but we need to get ready for the next leap in technology and if we are not\, we will founder. Our companies must stay competitive\, but they may lose their edge if we don’t\, and we individually may fail to keep up with the tech changes which our kids will take for granted. \nIndustry is adapting technologies to optimise its controlling processes\, with the ability to remotely control as many as 10\,000 valves on a single offshore platform. But do we understand the latest technology\, and how do we compare with other similar industries such as mining? \nThis presentation will provide a background of the basic technologies which are being used in most ‘smart’ applications. It will provide an insight into the simple processes used\, such as pattern recognition\, infra-red monitoring\, the digital twin and automation analytics. Armed with this knowledge\, it will then explain the shock effect when quantum computers arrive and how the next major tech leap will affect both business\, but more importantly our daily lives. \n\nAbout the Speaker – Brian Evans\nBrian started his career in 1970 as an automation control design engineer with GEC Automation\, following which he learnt geology with Geoservice Paris as a mud logger. He then worked out of London/Dallas with Geophysical Service Inc as an instrument engineer. Subsequently\, he was an oil and gas geophysical consultant arriving in Perth in 1977 having worked in most areas of the world\, representing most of the oil majors of the day. During a time of industry downturn\, he did a Masters/PhD in Geophysics and enjoyed the research aspect of reservoir geophysics so much he stayed in academia while maintaining close contacts with industry. Over that whole period in time\, he worked in data analytics. \nBrian was responsible for establishing the Departments of Exploration Geophysics and Petroleum Engineering at Curtin\, becoming Head where he introduced the Bachelor and Master by research in Petroleum Engineering. He was also responsible for developing the Curtin Master of Predictive Analytics and the Master of Subsea Engineering courses. \nA winner of many international awards including the 2013 SPE: International Faculty Pipeline Award and 2014 Subsea Energy Australia: Business Special Recognition Award\, he holds five industrial patents\, published over 250 journal papers\, graduated 21 PhD students in geophysics/petroleum engineering and retired in 2019 after receiving the lifetime award of JCD Emeritus Professor from Curtin. He wrote the recently published book “A Simple Guide to Technology and Analytics”. \n\nAbout the Event\nPrice:               Early Bird SPE Member         $40 <Until the 21st of Jan 2022>\nTicket Price:  Early Bird Non-Member        $60 <Until the 21st of Jan 2022>\nTicket Price:  SPE Member                            $50\nTicket Price:  Non-Member                           $70 \nDate:                Tuesday\, 25th of Jan 2022 \nLocation:        Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:        14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:                4.45 pm – 5.00 pm Registration & Networking\nTime:                5.00 pm – 5.10 pm SPE WA Opening Marks\nTime:                5.10 pm – 5.45 pm Presentation\nTime:                5.45 pm – 6.00 pm Q&A Session\nTime:                6.00 pm – 7.30 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles \nPlease\, notice the tickets sale closes on the 24th of January at midday.

DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our December Technical Evening Meeting. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe events of the past year accelerated many changes in our industry\, creating not only a new landscape but an increased urgency to deliver on the industry mandates of cost\, capital intensity\, and carbon. \nLooking to the current industry dynamics\, we see a new cycle of oil and gas demand growth beginning\, with the onset of a strong multiyear economic rebound. Industry demand projections for oil and gas continue to show both growth and resilience as a key pillar of the energy mix. \nIn this context of business outlook\, the long-term competitiveness of our industry will depend on our ability to effectively harness technology\, data\, and deeper collaboration to address these industry mandates. To thrive\, we need to generate higher value as we deliver lower carbon energy that sustains the world across the energy transition. The past year has given us the opportunity to reimagine our industry\, and today I will be sharing with you our approach to generating higher value with lower carbon footprint. During this presentation I would be sharing with you Schlumberger Net Zero roadmap as well as our Decarbonization Framework and Transition Technologies. \n\nAbout the Speaker – Shara Patricia Ciravolo Fesser\n \nShara Patricia is currently the Schlumberger Managing Director for Australia\, New Zealand\, Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste\, based in Perth\, West Australia. \nShe has more than twenty years of experience in technical\, administrative\, human resources and managerial positions for the Oil & Gas industry. SUMMARY:Dehydration of Carbon Capture (CCS) Technologies Copy
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is pleased to announce the November Facilities Group Technical Event led by Ross Weiter\, Principal Consultant and Carbon Capture Lead from Advisian.  \n  \n\nAbout the Presentation\nCCUS is seen by many bodies such as the IEA and the IPCC as one of the key enablers to decarbonizing the economy. Transportation of CO2 is a key focal area in any CCUS project\, but while dehydration of natural gas for transportation is well understood and regulated\, the same cannot be said for CO2. \nDehydration specifications need to consider important project parameters such as ambient temperatures\, CO2 pressures and materials of construction. Based on the selected specification\, the most suitable method for implementing the dehydration should be selected\, along with the optimum location of the dehydration equipment in the multi-stage pressure-boosting plant.  These challenges\, and a methodology for overcoming them\, will be explored in this presentation. \nAbout the Speaker – Ross Weiter\n \nRoss has over 28 years of experience in all areas of the upstream oil and gas industry. This includes time spent in concept engineering\, front end engineering design\, detail design\, operation support and several years of site work. His experience includes many carbon capture and sequestration studies for various clients such as Wesfarmers\, Arctic LNG2\, Woodside\, ConocoPhillips\, Chevron\, Korea National Oil Company\, BG and others. Ross spent most of his career working in Perth\, with three years in Muscat working for Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). Today he is a Principal Consultant at Advisian\, where he is also the Carbon Capture and Sequestration Lead for the Asia-Pacific Region. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             SPE Member $10\nPrice:             Non-Member $15\nPrice:             Bring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nPrice:             Add your friend’s name to the field “Attendee Names” on the checkout page. \nDate:              Tuesday\, 16th of November 2021 \nLocation:      Riff Spacecubed – 45 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime:              5:00 pm – 5:25pm  Registration & Networking\nTime:              5:25 pm – 5:30 pm  SPE WA Opening\nTime:              5:30 pm – 6:15 pm Presentation\nTime:              6:15 pm  – 7:00 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles

SUMMARY:Global LNG – An Industry in Disruptive Transformation
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA is proud to present the details of the November SPE Distinguished Lecturer Webinar. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe global Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry is going through disruptive transformation. This term is often heard but one we can now see applied to a large capital intensive industry. For decades\, the LNG business had been traditional\, cosy\, conservative and uncompetitive\, with a few large players\, opaque and rigid. \nWe consider the drivers that make an industry change\, particularly an energy industry and the characteristics of energy markets. We find that LNG meets the criteria of an industry ready for change. Three key factors drive transformation\, namely an industry wide crisis\, action to enable the business environment and then the market developing by itself. \nDrivers for LNG change include technological (FSRU\, FLNG\, supersized ships\, Mini-LNG\, bunkering) and commercial (global LNG oversupply\, regulatory\, new demand and supply centres\, new business models\, new players\, new trading patterns). Any of these can provide an industry crisis but among the most important is the entry of the USA\, set to become the world’s marginal LNG supplier (which sets the price) and also largest supplier\, with different business models. The combined effects are transformational. \nChange is continuing\, with the growing influence of the USA\, LNG hubs\, bunkering and mini LNG. The sleepy traditional LNG world is changing and will continue to do so. Coronavirus has a large impact but the LNG world was already transforming. \nMembers should consider what further disruption will come. They should also identify additional value in gas from previously stranded supplies and demand which can now be opened up. \n\nAbout the Speakers – Peter Nigel Cameron\nMr Peter Cameron is Founder and Managing Director of Energy Markets Global\, a UK based international energy markets consultancy. He is also lecturer in Business Strategy for Middlesex University (UK) Oil and Gas MBA. \nPeter advises governments and companies globally on the economic and commercial aspects of gas markets. He has over 25 years of worldwide project experience (long and short term). He was Chairman of the International Services Board of the Society of British Gas Industries and represented the British Government on the gas sector worldwide. Previously\, Peter was Corporate Strategist and Planner for British Gas (now Shell). \n\nWebinar registration:\nPlease register via the SPE Distinguished Lecture link below.
