SUMMARY:SPE Distinguished Lecturer - How To Design A Good Reservoir Model
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our April Technical Luncheon Meeting from our SPE Distinguished Lecturer Mark Bentley. \nAbout the Presentation\nThe difference between good models and bad models is an issue of model design. How can you tell the difference between a ‘good’ reservoir model and a ‘bad’ one? \nReservoir and simulation modelling capability has become a mainstream activity in petroleum engineering yet the models themselves often tend to disappoint.  Crucially\, models and forecasts tend to be optimistic. \nThis talk draws on experiences accumulated over the last 25 years from working with international and national oil companies\, and draws out common themes – reasons why some modelling and simulation outcomes are ‘good’\, and others are ‘bad’. The over-riding theme is model design\, and it will be argued that many of the errors in modelling are made before anyone logs on.  It’s not the capability of the software\, it’s the design choices made. \nThe following design issues will be identified and optimal approaches recommended\, concerning: \n\nmodel purpose\, and the balance of simplicity vs. complexity in modelling\nimperfect data and concept-based modelling – “if you can sketch it\, you can model it”\ntaking a fluid-centric view of the need for detail: reservoir modelling\, rather than\ngeological modelling;\nthe scale transition\, searching for the ‘lost heterogeneity’\n\nThe points above will be illustrated with a case study from a mature oil field undergoing waterflood\, in which a decision on infill drilling needed to be made. \nAbout the Speaker – Mark Bentley\nMark has been in the industry since 1986\, initially as a production geologist with Shell where he first started learning about reservoir modelling.  He has spent the subsequent 22 years training and consulting around the world with colleagues at TRACS.  His specialist technical fields are reservoir modelling and scenario-based approaches to handling uncertainty. \nMark is a frequent contributor at conferences and co-author of the textbook ‘Reservoir Model Design’. In 2018 he took up the Chair in Mature Field Management at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $30 <Until the 22nd April 2022>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $50 <Until the 22nd April 2022>\n                       SPE Member                          $40\n                       Non-Member                          $60 \nDate:              Thursday\, 28th April 2022 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             11:45 am – 12:15 pm Registration with Networking & Food.\nTime:             12:15 pm – 12:20 pm SPE WA Opening Marks.\nTime:             12:20 pm – 12:55 pm Presentation.\nTime:             12:55 pm – 13:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             13:00 pm – 13:15 pm Closing with Networking. \nPlease notice the tickets sale is limited and be hurry to lock in your ticket. SUMMARY:Impact of Climate Issues on Energy Industry Through 2050
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA is proud to present the details of the February 2022 SPE Distinguished Lecturer Webinar. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe world population\, energy companies\, industry associations\, professional societies and most policy makers increasingly view climate change and Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) as an existential threat to a sustainable future.  Demands to “decarbonize” energy grow rapidly and pose a serious challenge to the energy industry. \nThis presentation (1) summarizes the need for oil and gas as a worldwide energy source at mid-century and beyond\, (2) highlights ideas of several key thinkers regarding climate issues\, (3) describes the range of activities beyond “pure climate science” needed to address AGW\, and (4) highlights industry activities addressing AGW including strategies to get to “zero net emissions” by mid-century. \nThe author challenges industry leaders and professionals to avoid thinking “We are not climate scientists” as a barrier to engaging proactively in addressing climate issues. Broad systems analyses are needed to develop energy solutions – working across the nexus of the realms of energy\, environment\, and economics.  SPE’s Technical Disciplines\, as professionals working in energy\, can contribute a broad range of energy expertise needed to address AGW.  We must be proactive in engaging the worldwide community – earn trust as serious solutions providers. \nA political leader in climate policy offered a message to energy industry leaders: “If you don’t have a seat at the table (influencing policy)\, you will be part of the meal.”  The author adds a quote by Von Karmen – “Scientists discover the world that exists; engineers create the world that never was.”  The world needs energy professionals such as in SPE to claim a seat at the table along side of the climate scientists to solve climate challenges. \n\nAbout the Speaker – Philip Grossweiler\nPhil retired from ExxonMobil after 25 years in Production\, Development\, and Research Companies with assignments in engineering\, project management\, breakthrough research\, and corporate planning.  He consults at M&H Energy Services on Risk Management and LNG projects. His perspectives on climate policy and energy are based\, in part\, on work on staff of a Member of U.S. Congress and as Chair of an advisory committee to the U.S. Secretary of Energy for energy R&D Programs. He holds MS Degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in Marine Engineering from U.S. Coast Guard Academy.  He Chairs SPE’s Sustainable Development Technical Section and Co-Chairs SPE’s Climate Advisory Committee. \n\nWebinar registration:\nPlease register via the SPE Distinguished Lecture link below.

SUMMARY:Automation and Data Analytics in the O&G industry
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our Jan 2022 Technical Evening Meeting. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nConstant change is occurring in industry and society. The advent of ‘smart’ technologies is changing our lives\, and we have to deal with the buzz words of ‘automation’\, ‘data analytics’\, ‘machine language’\, ‘block chain’ and ‘Python’. But what does it all mean for today’s petroleum engineer and why now? All engineers are natural data analysists\, but we need to get ready for the next leap in technology and if we are not\, we will founder. Our companies must stay competitive\, but they may lose their edge if we don’t\, and we individually may fail to keep up with the tech changes which our kids will take for granted. \nIndustry is adapting technologies to optimise its controlling processes\, with the ability to remotely control as many as 10\,000 valves on a single offshore platform. But do we understand the latest technology\, and how do we compare with other similar industries such as mining? \nThis presentation will provide a background of the basic technologies which are being used in most ‘smart’ applications. It will provide an insight into the simple processes used\, such as pattern recognition\, infra-red monitoring\, the digital twin and automation analytics. Armed with this knowledge\, it will then explain the shock effect when quantum computers arrive and how the next major tech leap will affect both business\, but more importantly our daily lives. \n\nAbout the Speaker – Brian Evans\nBrian started his career in 1970 as an automation control design engineer with GEC Automation\, following which he learnt geology with Geoservice Paris as a mud logger. He then worked out of London/Dallas with Geophysical Service Inc as an instrument engineer. Subsequently\, he was an oil and gas geophysical consultant arriving in Perth in 1977 having worked in most areas of the world\, representing most of the oil majors of the day. During a time of industry downturn\, he did a Masters/PhD in Geophysics and enjoyed the research aspect of reservoir geophysics so much he stayed in academia while maintaining close contacts with industry. Over that whole period in time\, he worked in data analytics. \nBrian was responsible for establishing the Departments of Exploration Geophysics and Petroleum Engineering at Curtin\, becoming Head where he introduced the Bachelor and Master by research in Petroleum Engineering. He was also responsible for developing the Curtin Master of Predictive Analytics and the Master of Subsea Engineering courses. \nA winner of many international awards including the 2013 SPE: International Faculty Pipeline Award and 2014 Subsea Energy Australia: Business Special Recognition Award\, he holds five industrial patents\, published over 250 journal papers\, graduated 21 PhD students in geophysics/petroleum engineering and retired in 2019 after receiving the lifetime award of JCD Emeritus Professor from Curtin. He wrote the recently published book “A Simple Guide to Technology and Analytics”. \n\nAbout the Event\nPrice:               Early Bird SPE Member         $40 <Until the 21st of Jan 2022>\nTicket Price:  Early Bird Non-Member        $60 <Until the 21st of Jan 2022>\nTicket Price:  SPE Member                            $50\nTicket Price:  Non-Member                           $70 \nDate:                Tuesday\, 25th of Jan 2022 \nLocation:        Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:        14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:                4.45 pm – 5.00 pm Registration & Networking\nTime:                5.00 pm – 5.10 pm SPE WA Opening Marks\nTime:                5.10 pm – 5.45 pm Presentation\nTime:                5.45 pm – 6.00 pm Q&A Session\nTime:                6.00 pm – 7.30 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles \nPlease\, notice the tickets sale closes on the 24th of January at midday.

SUMMARY:Dehydration of Carbon Capture (CCS) Technologies Copy
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is pleased to announce the November Facilities Group Technical Event led by Ross Weiter\, Principal Consultant and Carbon Capture Lead from Advisian.  \n  \n\nAbout the Presentation\nCCUS is seen by many bodies such as the IEA and the IPCC as one of the key enablers to decarbonizing the economy. Transportation of CO2 is a key focal area in any CCUS project\, but while dehydration of natural gas for transportation is well understood and regulated\, the same cannot be said for CO2. \nDehydration specifications need to consider important project parameters such as ambient temperatures\, CO2 pressures and materials of construction. SUMMARY:Global LNG – An Industry in Disruptive Transformation
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA is proud to present the details of the November SPE Distinguished Lecturer Webinar. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe global Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry is going through disruptive transformation. This term is often heard but one we can now see applied to a large capital intensive industry. For decades\, the LNG business had been traditional\, cosy\, conservative and uncompetitive\, with a few large players\, opaque and rigid. \nWe consider the drivers that make an industry change\, particularly an energy industry and the characteristics of energy markets. We find that LNG meets the criteria of an industry ready for change. Three key factors drive transformation\, namely an industry wide crisis\, action to enable the business environment and then the market developing by itself. \nDrivers for LNG change include technological (FSRU\, FLNG\, supersized ships\, Mini-LNG\, bunkering) and commercial (global LNG oversupply\, regulatory\, new demand and supply centres\, new business models\, new players\, new trading patterns). Any of these can provide an industry crisis but among the most important is the entry of the USA\, set to become the world’s marginal LNG supplier (which sets the price) and also largest supplier\, with different business models. The combined effects are transformational. \nChange is continuing\, with the growing influence of the USA\, LNG hubs\, bunkering and mini LNG. The sleepy traditional LNG world is changing and will continue to do so. Coronavirus has a large impact but the LNG world was already transforming. \nMembers should consider what further disruption will come. They should also identify additional value in gas from previously stranded supplies and demand which can now be opened up. \n\nAbout the Speakers – Peter Nigel Cameron\nMr Peter Cameron is Founder and Managing Director of Energy Markets Global\, a UK based international energy markets consultancy. He is also lecturer in Business Strategy for Middlesex University (UK) Oil and Gas MBA. \nPeter advises governments and companies globally on the economic and commercial aspects of gas markets. He has over 25 years of worldwide project experience (long and short term). He was Chairman of the International Services Board of the Society of British Gas Industries and represented the British Government on the gas sector worldwide. Previously\, Peter was Corporate Strategist and Planner for British Gas (now Shell). \n\nWebinar registration:\nPlease register via the SPE Distinguished Lecture link below.

SUMMARY:Monitoring and Modelling Condensate Banking Effects with the Ichthys Field Production Data
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our October Technical Evening Meeting. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe Ichthys gas-condensate field is situated in the Browse Basin\, North West Shelf of Australia\, and the field production commenced in July 2018. The Brewster Member\, one of the two reservoirs in the field\, is a liquid-rich sandstone reservoir. One of the major uncertainties is the degree of well productivity impairment\, caused by condensate banking since the dew point pressure is close to the initial reservoir pressure. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the condensate banking impact on well production performance and to establish a modelling methodology to consider the condensate banking effect in a full-field simulation model\, based on the field production data. \nPermanent downhole gauges are deployed in the field\, and thus\, downhole pressure can be monitored continuously. We conducted high rate tests for selected wells to monitor well productivity impairment from the condensate banking. This production data was history-matched with a compositional sector model by applying Local Grid Refinement (LGR) and Velocity-Dependent Relative Permeability (VDRP) to account for more accurate physics in the near-well region. With the tuned VDRP model\, skin trends were predicted to increase with various gas rates\, and a skin correlation was established as a function of this gas rate. This correlation is applied to the full-field simulation where LGR and VDRP cannot be applied due to a simulation time constraint. \nThe skin correlation was validated through the history matching\, using the full-field model and was used to predict the future field production performance. We need continuous monitoring of the condensate banking effect\, to further validate the correlation because the production data used in this study is less than one-year duration. The correlation is then flexible enough to tune the history matching when necessary. \nWe present the monitoring and modelling of the condensate banking effect with the actual production data. The implementation of the proposed well modelling will help reservoir engineers in considering the condensate banking effect in the field production forecast. \n\nAbout the Speaker – Ryo Iizuka\n \nRyo Iizuka is Senior Reservoir Engineer for INPEX. He has 12 years of experience in reservoir engineering\, and his expertise includes reservoir simulation\, pressure transient analysis\, CO2 EOR and field development planning. For the past 6 years\, he has worked on reservoir management and development planning for the Ichthys field. \n\nAbout the Event\nPrice:               Early Bird SPE Member         $40 <Until the 13th of October>\nTicket Price:  Early Bird Non-Member        $60 <Until the 13th of October>\nTicket Price:  SPE Member                            $50\nTicket Price:  Non-Member                           $70 \nDate:                Wednesday\, 20th of October 2021 \nLocation:        Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:        14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:                4.45 pm – 5.00 pm Registration & Networking\nTime:                5.00 pm – 5.10 pm SPE WA Opening Marks\nTime:                5.10 pm – 5.45 pm Presentation\nTime:                5.45 pm – 6.00 pm Q&A Session\nTime:                6.00 pm – 7.30 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles \nPlease\, notice the tickets sale closes on the 19th of October at midday. \n\nFree Tickets Available for SPE Student Chapter Members\nSPE WA\, in conjunction with our sponsor\, tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics)\, are kindly sponsoring SPE Student Chapter Members to attend the monthly technical events. SUMMARY:Cancelled - Operational Digital Twins: Real Experience in Delivering Virtual Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is pleased to announce the September Facilities Group Technical Event lead by Greg Sevel and Andy Jones \n\nAbout the Presentation\nJust defining a Digital Twin can be a complex ordeal. So\, it should not be surprising that actually creating a useful Digital Twin of an Oil and Gas asset is a challenging and non-linear journey. Worley Digital and Sentient Computing have spent the better part of the last decade approaching this challenge from opposite sides\, often partnering to provide a more holistic solution to our customers. Operating on the bleeding edge\, we have had our share of failures\, learnings\, and successes in our journey. \nIn this presentation\, we openly discuss our experiences: what worked and what did not\, the challenges that we continue to face\, the rationale behind each of our approaches and the future that we see for the Digital Twin sector. \n\nAbout the Speakers\n Greg Sevel\n \nGreg is a Product Manager at Sentient Computing\, an Australian technology company provider that specialises in solving industrial-scale visualisation challenges. SUMMARY:Blue Hydrogen – Gas-Gas Separation Technologies
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is pleased to announce the August Facilities Group Technical Event lead by Dr Gongkui Xiao\, Research Fellow from The University of Western Australia. \n\nAbout the Presentation\nHydrogen is increasingly being acknowledged as an energy carrier that will help achieve a low or net zero-carbon energy future. Currently\, more than 95% of the hydrogen in the world is produced from fossil fuels\, with or without the capture of the co-produced carbon dioxide. When the carbon dioxide is captured and sequestered (e.g. permanently stored in depleted oil or gas reservoirs or deep saline aquifers)\, the hydrogen is referred to as blue hydrogen. \nSeveral gas-gas separation operations are involved in the production of blue hydrogen from methane steam reforming\, hydrocarbon reforming or coal gasification.  These include desulfurization of the feed gas or syngas to protect the catalysts used in the production process\, the removal of gas impurities in the hydrogen product stream\, the capture and purification of the carbon dioxide co-produced in the process\, and optional further separation or recovery of valuable components such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in the vent gas from the hydrogen purification and CO2 removal units.  More recently the low carbon-hydrogen (LCH) process offers a major improvement in blue hydrogen production through the use of oxygen. \nGas-gas separation operations are also essential in the application of hydrogen as an energy carrier. Ammonia is already in use as a transport friendly proxy for hydrogen. The ammonia production process requires air separation to provide the nitrogen for ammonia synthesis\, the purification of the produced ammonia\, and the recovery of hydrogen from the vent of liquid ammonia storage. In addition\, there is also a need for the separation of hydrogen from natural gas if the produced hydrogen is blended with natural gas for pipeline transportation to end-users. \nThis presentation reviews the gas-gas separation technologies required in the production\, distribution and use of blue hydrogen. \n\nAbout the Speaker – Dr Gongkui Xiao\n \nDr Gongkui Xiao graduated with a PhD degree in chemical engineering from Monash University in 2012. He then worked as a post-doc researcher at Monash University and the University of Melbourne on the modelling and pilot demonstration of carbon capture processes. He is now a chartered professional engineer and research fellow at The University of Western Australia. His research revolves around the development and application of novel materials and processes in energy and environmental related technologies. He has published more than 40 papers related to gas separations. He has consulted on industry projects for improving the efficiency of gas separation processes for companies in the Middle East and North America. \n\nAbout the Event\nPrice:             SPE Member $10\nPrice:             Non-Member $15\nPrice:             Bring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nPrice:             Add your friend’s name to the field “Attendee Names” on the checkout page. \nDate:              Tuesday\, 17th of August 2021 \nLocation:      Riff Spacecubed – 45 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime:              4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration & Networking\nTime:              5:00 pm – 5:05  pm  SPE WA Opening\nTime:              5:05  pm  – 5:45 pm Presentation\nTime:              5:45  pm  – 6:00 pm Q&A\nTime:              6:00 pm  – 7:00 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles \n\n

SUMMARY:Digital Twins and Hydrogen in Gas Distribution Systems
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is pleased to announce the July Facilities Group Technical Event: “Digital Twins and Hydrogen in Gas Distribution Systems” lead by James Holbeach\, Global Director of Energy and Flow Assurance\, from Wood. \n\nAbout the Presentation \nIt is simple right? Just inject a bit of hydrogen into the natural gas pipeline\, make sure the gas meets spec\, and you can transport hydrogen in the natural gas grid. Life was not meant to be simple\, and unfortunately\, neither is hydrogen transport in natural gas. While it looks deceptively simple it can actually be quite complex and standard engineering design practices need to be reconsidered. In this talk\, we will go through some design considerations for blending hydrogen in natural gas\, some analogous real-world cases studies from operations\, and some examples of the complexities involved with hydrogen-enriched natural gas from integrity issues to stability. \n\nAbout the Speaker – James Holbeach \n \nDr Holbeach has a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical)\, a Bachelor of Science (Physics) and was awarded his PhD from the University of Melbourne\, in Chemical Engineering through CFD and experimental research in the multiphase fluid mechanics area. James has over 20 years of industry experience in management\, strategy\, automation and control and complex dynamic process engineering across multiple industry sectors. He has managed and provided consultancy support to some of the largest energy and resource projects around the world and has worked at all stages of project execution for service companies and operators alike. \nJames is Global Director – Energy and Flow Assurance for Wood. In this role\, he has technical oversight of Wood’s suite of world-leading intelligent operations technologies (including digital twins\, operator training simulators\, environmental and emissions monitoring/optimisation technologies and others) and consultancy services. Wood comprises over 45\,000 employees globally and is one of the largest independent engineering and consultancy companies in the world. \n\nAbout the Event \nCost:            SPE Member $10\nCost:            Non-Member $15\nCost:            Bring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nCost:            Add your friend’s name to the field “Attendee Names” on the checkout page. \nDate:            Tuesday\, 20th of July 2021 \nLocation:     Riff Spacecubed – 45 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime:            4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration & Networking\nTime:            5:00 pm – 5:05  pm  SPE WA Opening\nTime:            5:05  pm  – 5:45 pm Presentation\nTime:            5:45  pm  – 6:00 pm Q&A\nTime:            6:00 pm  – 6:45 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles \n\na

SUMMARY:SPE Australasia Online Talk - Is There A Future For Oil & Gas In A Net Zero World?
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA are proud to present the details of 20 July 2021 SPE Australasia Webinar. \nWebinar registration:\nNote that once you register on the website\, a separate email will be sent to you which has a link that takes you to the webinar specific entry gateway before the webinar. \nAbout the Presentation\nOur industry is facing mounting pressure from all sides to decarbonize. Regulations are getting tougher in response to public pressure and investors are pulling capital out of the oil and gas industry over concerns that assets may be left in the ground stranded. Natural gas has been touted as the transition fuel to net zero. However\, because of the methane emitted in the production and distribution process\, some believe that it is dirtier than coal and cannot play this role. We have to act now or our industry will be viewed adversely and collectively we will make poor energy decisions for our planet. Technology that is able to detect and measure methane emissions is showing that we have a problem along our entire exploration\, production\, processing and distribution chain. According to the World Bank Global Gas Flaring Reduction group\, every day over 14.5 billion standard cubic feet of gas is vented and flared globally. In addition to being a monumental waste of energy\, this practice releases methane\, VOC’s\, PAH’s\, particulates and other harmful pollutants into our atmosphere impacting air quality\, human health and contributing to climate change. Methane is 86 times worse that carbon dioxide over a thirty-year time frame which means that eliminating these fugitive emissions is one of the biggest opportunities to cost effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions providing an immediate impact in a short time frame. Can we act\, do we have time to change the narrative and can we create a great future for all? What will it take? \nAbout the Speakers – Audrey Mascarenhas \nAudrey Mascarenhas is President and CEO of Questor Technology Inc. (Questor) a public\, international company focused on clean air and energy efficiency technology. Audrey has worked in energy and environment for over 39 years with Gulf Canada Resources Ltd.\, presently Conoco-Phillips and Questor. Through her leadership\, she has focused on technology solutions to eliminate methane and harmful pollutants. Audrey shares her passion for the environment and served as a distinguished lecturer with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) in 2010-2011. \nShe is a graduate of the University of Toronto with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and holds a Masters Degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Calgary. She is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineers. Audrey was the recipient of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2011 Prairies Award for Cleantech and Environmental Services and received a national citation for Values- Based Innovation. Audrey currently serves as an expert on the Circular Economic Panel advising Environment Canada\, the Lazaridis Institute global advisory and the Schulich Industry Engineering Advisory Council. SUMMARY:24 June 2021 SPE Distinguished Lecturer Webinar on Subsurface Analytics: Digital Transformation of Reservoir Management with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA are proud to present the details of 24 June 2021 SPE Distinguished Lecturer Webinar. \nWebinar registration:\nSPE REGISTRATION LINK located HERE. \n  \nAbout the Presentation\nSubsurface Analytics is an alternative to traditional reservoir modeling and res. management. \nPositively influencing subsurface related decision making is the most important contribution of any new technology. Subsurface Analytics is the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI&ML) in Reservoir Engineering\, Characterization\, Modeling\, and Management. Applicable to both conventional and unconventional plays\, Subsurface Analytics goes far beyond the traditional statistical algorithms that use only production data and fail to take into consideration the important field measurements such as well trajectories\, well logs\, seismic\, core data\, PVT\, well test\, completion\, and operational constraints. Subsurface Analytics is the manifestation of Digital Transformation in Reservoir Engineering\, Modeling\, and Management. \nSubsurface Analytics is a new and innovative technology that has been tested and validated in a large number of real life cases in North and Central America\, North Sea\, Middle East\, and Southeast Asia. It has been successfully applied in several highly complex mature fields where conventional commercial reservoir simulators were unable to simultanuously history match multiple dynamic variables for large number of wells. Results and field validations from multiple case studies are included in the presentation. \nSubsurface Analytics addresses realistic and useful applications of AI&ML in the upstream Exploration and Production Industry. The technology has been validated and confirmed for (a) prediction of well behavior under different operational conditions\, (b) modeling and forecasting pressure and saturation distribution throughout the reservoir\, (c) infill well location optimization for both producers and injectors\, (d) choke optimization for production improvement\, and (e) completion optimization for production enhancement. \nAbout the Speakers – Shahab D. Oil production and water injection will commence during the drilling campaign. Therefore\, the reservoir pressure in the wells executed post start-up may be inflated\, depleted\, or both\, reducing the available mud window and impacting the drillability. \nIn this presentation\, we will describe the process of identifying vulnerable wells by a combination of a deterministic borehole stability assessment of mud weight windows and a probabilistic well-by-well analysis of reservoir pressure at the time of drilling. We will introduce an innovative workflow which captures the range of subsurface uncertainties to define probabilistic risk of depletion and overpressure. The magnitude of pressure disturbance was in some scenarios significantly greater than initially anticipated. \nFinally\, we will show how the improved understanding of pressure depletion and inflation scenarios and mud windows was used to revise the well sequence in order to minimise borehole stability risks during the drilling campaign. \nAbout the Speakers \nLisa Gavin \nLisa is a Geophysicist with Woodside Energy\, based in Perth\, Australia. SUMMARY:Harnessing rigs and innovation to reduce Field Development & Decommissioning Costs
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA is pleased to announce the third SPE WA Facilities Group Technical Event for 2021\, ‘Harnessing rigs and innovation to reduce Field Development & Decommissioning Costs\,” lead by Darren O’Leary\, GM Field Development\, from ICON Engineering. \nAbout the Presentation \nA perfect storm of low oil & gas prices\, plus decommissioning and decarbonisation pressures\, is forcing our industry to identify and adopt a wide range of innovative lower cost Field Development and Decommissioning solutions. One of these is to extend the utility of Drilling Rigs already mobilised to drill and P&A offshore wells. \nThe utilisation of the full capability of offshore Drilling Rigs beyond development drilling and P&A\, including facilities installation and removal\, often allows operators to eliminate cranes barges/subsea construction vessel entirely. \nInstallation of Wellhead Platforms with the Jack-Up Rigs already mobilised to drill the wells is a proven method of delivering significant cost savings. The same advantages occur in decommissioning. In deeper water\, the Installation of subsea facilities\, including flowlines with the Semi-sub drill rig\, has also proven to deliver significant cost savings and possibilities existing in decommissioning in parallel with well P&A. \nThe word “innovation” is derived from the Latin verb “innovare” to introduce something new. In our industry\, this is a difficult process. Using a rig instead of traditional installation vessels requires a change in mindset. One of the keys is to have very early collaboration between an Operator’s Drilling and Project Facilities Departments. \nThis presentation will outline the evolution of this approach\, lessons from ICON’s journey and the continuous pursuit of identifying\, developing & implementing future innovations that will lower Development & Decommissioning costs. \nAbout the Speaker – Darren O’Leary \n \nDarren O’Leary is GM Field Development with ICON Engineering. He graduated in 1990 with a BEng and 2013 with an MBA from the University of Western Australia. \nDarren has over 30 years of experience in the oil & gas business. Developing and delivering offshore and subsea projects. He has extensive knowledge of engineering\, construction\, installation and decommissioning. He has worked in technical and management roles\, for operators and contractors\, across a wide range of project and offshore locations\, including Australia\, NZ\, Singapore\, Thailand\, Malaysia\, Indonesia\, Vietnam\, PNG\, China\, India\, Qatar\, USA\, Brazil\, Nigeria\, UK\, and Norway. \nAbout the Event \nCost: $10 (Bring a friend for free\, must be on the same registration) – Refreshments for networking provided \nDate: Wednesday\, 16th June 2021 \nTime: 4:45 p.m. – registration \n5:00 – 5:30 p.m. – Presentation \n5:30 – 6:45 p.m. – Networking \nVenue: RIFF Space cubed – 45 St Georges terrace\, Perth WA (Opposite C – restaurant) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Applying well decommissioning lessons learned globally to reduce Australia’s estimated USD40.5 billion offshore decommissioning liability.
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA is pleased to announce the second SPE WA Facilities Group Technical Event ‘ Applying well decommissioning lessons learned globally to reduce Australia’s estimated USD40.5 billion offshore decommissioning liability’ lead by Christopher Murphy a Senior Research Fellow from Curtin University Oil and Gas Innovation Centre. \nAbout the Presentation: \nAustralia is entering a new era in the oil and gas sector with significant offshore decommissioning projects to be executed over the next 50 years.  An executive summary was made public by NERA in March 2020 based on a commissioned Advisian report “Offshore Oil and Gas Decommissioning Liability (Australia)”. The estimated decommissioning liability\, including all wells\, facilities and pipelines\, is USD40.5 billion based on full infrastructure removal.  51% of the estimated costs will be expended in the next ten years\, 74% by 2040.  Wells account for 41%\, the remainder being facilities and pipelines. Globally\, the industry has been decommissioning for many decades and the lessons learned from these operations are important for Australia.  The Advisian report captures a number of these learnings and has quantified the potential cost savings across the key liabilities of wells and pipelines\, for example if pipelines are left in-situ (-15%\, USD5.9 billion).  If well decommissioning campaigns shared lessons learned\, applied “technical limit” and applied new technology (-10%\, USD4.1 billion) \nHowever\, a recent study by Curtin shows potentially larger cost savings in well decommissioning through cap rock restoration and rigless / riserless techniques applied across the portfolio of ~1\,000 Commonwealth offshore wells. The cost reduction possibilities range from 21% to 41% applied to the dry (platform) and wet (subsea) tree portfolio found in Bass Strait (South East) and North West Shelf / Timor Sea (North West). The presentation will highlight the basis for this well cost reduction assertion along with the methodologies developed in other geographic areas and evolved since the 1980’s to reduce decommissioning costs in wells. \nAbout the Speaker: \n \nChristopher Murphy is a Senior Research Fellow with Curtin University Oil and Gas Innovation Centre\, Australia. He graduated in 1979 with a BSc Honours in Mining Engineering from Leeds University\, UK. Christopher has over 41 years of experience in the oil and gas business and has extensive knowledge of well construction and well and small offshore facilities decommissioning. Christopher was previously Head of \nWells and Production Technology for British Gas and Vice President – Global Marine Solutions for Wild Well Control. The latter position saw him personally involved with over 400 well decommissioning projects and 60 small platform decommissioning operations in the GoM and internationally. He is an SPE member and co-author of a\nUS patent related to blind annulus isolation in subsea well decommissioning\, patent number US 2013/0269948 A1. \nEvent Details: \nCost: $10 (bring a friend for free\, must be on the same registration)   \nDate: Tuesday\, 18th May \nTime: 5:00 pm – 5:30 pm Presentation \n5:50 pm – 7:00 pm Networking (refreshments for networking provided) \nVenue: RIFF Spaced cubed – 45 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA (Opposite C – restaurant)
