SUMMARY:February 2020 Technical Luncheon - Injection Wells: The New Generation of Outflow Control Devices to Efficiently Control the Injection Fluid Conformance
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA are proud to present the details of our Feb technical luncheon. \nAbout the Presentation\nSeveral injection techniques have been used to sweep oil toward the production wells and maintain reservoir pressure to improve the recovery. However\, the history of injection wells applications indicates a significant number of failures either in losing injectivity or in being unable to achieve the desired conformance for the injected fluids. \nSeveral techniques including using outflow control devices (OCDs) have been successful in several applications. However\, the devices may not be of great interest if applied in the formations with severe heterogeneities including natural or thermal fractures in both carbonated and sandstone formations. The high contrast in the injectivity of the section with fractures compared to the rest of the well causes delivery of a great portion of the injected water into that thief zone thus creating short-circuit to the nearby producer wells. \nA new autonomous device is developed to control the injection fluid into natural/propagated fractures crossing the well thus eliminating the current intervention practices. This paper will present an overview of the product development with flow loop testing and demonstrates its benefit by dynamic reservoir modelling. This presentation also will describe the design consideration of any potential adverse effect of this injection valve such as plugging\, reliability and erosion. \nLike other flow control valves\, this device should be installed in several compartments in the wells. The devices operate as normal outflow control valves initially and then if the injected flowrate flowing through a valve exceeds a designed threshold\, the valve will automatically move to another position to choke back the injection of fluid at that specific compartment. This allows the denied fluid to be distributed among the valves installed at neighbouring compartments so the impacts of the thief zone will be eliminated. This performance enables the operators to minimise the impacts of natural fractures on the injected fluid conformance and to control the growth of thermal fractures while reducing the injection cost and improving the reliability of the injection well systems. \nThe autonomous valve has been qualified and shows its reliability through the robustness\, plugging and erosion testing. The accelerated testing has demonstrated 20 years lifetime for the valve design. The flow loop test data along with a dynamic reservoir-well modelling of the flow performance is also presented. The simulation study showed that with a less imposed pressure drop compared to OCDs\, the fluid front could be managed much more efficiently to achieve the desired sweep and maximised ultimate recovery. \nThe first autonomous injection valve that chokes/restricts water into large/propagate fracture is developed. This device removes most of the deficiencies of OCDs and eliminates the requirements of running PLT and the following actions e.g. closing/opening of sliding sleeves. Instead\, it provides operators with a tool that enables the optimised completion to deliver optimum water and gas injection techniques autonomously. \nAbout the Speakers – Mojtaba Moradi\n \nMojtaba Moradi received his BSc and MSc degrees in Iran and his PhD in Petroleum Engineering from Heriot-Watt University\, UK. \nHe has more than eight years’ experience as a petroleum engineer. He also taught several petroleum and chemical engineering courses at Heriot-Watt University (UK) and Azad University (Iran). \nPrior to Tendeka\, he was involved in various projects from unconventional reservoirs\, intelligent wells to CO2 storage\, CO2-WAG EOR & gas condensate reservoirs \nMojtaba has published more than 20 technical papers. \nStudents (read below)!!! \nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsor tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics)\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:SPE WA Distinguished Lecturer: Improved Reservoir Characterisation
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA are proud to present the details of our November technical luncheon. Come along to an insightful presentation on “Using the Movement of Fluids in Geological Time to Improve Reservoir Characterisation” by SPE Distinguished Lecturer\, Bruce James! \nAbout the Presentation\nFluids\, such as oil\, gas\, and water\, can move within a reservoir over geological time. This talk will show how recognising these processes and incorporating them into analysis can greatly improve reservoir characterization and provide powerful insights to optimise development plans. I will use 3 very different examples to illustrate this. \nFirstly\, a deepwater oil field\, that had long been considered an “ugly duckling” was re-evaluated incorporating knowledge of historical fluid movement which had created compositional grading. The new analysis revealed better connectivity\, higher recoverable oil volumes and a previously unrecognized tar mat\, which demonstrated that producer locations should be higher on structure and the potential need for a waterflood. \nSecondly\, the Sunrise gas field in the Timor Sea was reassessed with the knowledge of historical advective gas mixing. This showed that Sunrise\, previously thought to have a high risk of compartmentalization\, was actually well connected both vertically and laterally. This analysis changed the number and locations of planned development wells\, significantly reducing the potential development cost. \nFinally\, in the Alberta Oil Sands\, analysis showed that the redistribution of “solid” bitumen and water had occurred as a result of biodegradation. This explained the puzzling water mobility and “upside down” transition zones. This knowledge is important in predicting the lateral movement of steam/heat needed for the optimum design of thermal oil recovery. \nThe movement of fluids within a reservoir over geological time happens more often than is commonly thought and is an under utilized tool for reservoir characterization. It is particularly valuable for offshore development where information is sparse. The most important key to using it is simply asking the question “could it have occurred?” \nAbout the Speaker – Bruce James\nBruce is a Reservoir Engineering Advisor in Calgary and has worked for Shell in New Orleans\, Unocal in Houston and Woodside in Perth\, Australia. Bruce has a B.A.Sc. and Ph.D. in Geological Engineering from U.B.C.\, Canada\, as well as a M.S. in Engineering Economics Systems and Operations Research from Stanford. He has authored over 50 papers and conference presentations. He won Best Paper at the 2014 SPE Heavy Oil Conference\, Best Paper and Honorable Mention for best presentation at the 2010 APPEA Conference in Australia. \nStudents (read below)!!!\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics) and Expro Group\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:October 2019 Technical Luncheon: Energy Frontiers - Overview and Evolution of FLNG
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA are proud to present the details of our October technical luncheon. Come along and learn about technical aspects and design challenges of FLNG. \nAbout the Presentation\nFloating LNG solutions place gas liquefaction facilities directly over the offshore gas field\, eliminating the need for long-distance pipelines and extensive onshore infrastructure. This approach is the evolution and merging of established technologies\, including liquefaction\, marine/LNG loading arms\, naval architecture\, and cargo containment systems in a unique way to provide an innovative approach to field developments. The project brought all these technologies and expertise from onshore and offshore design together in the first sanction FLNG and made it a success. \nGiven the novelty of Floating LNG\, a range of challenges and ultimate successes in technology integration and pioneering design standardisation were faced in the first wave of FLNG projects. A major challenge in the layout of FLNG facilities is the large process area required\, driving the design and fabrication of efficient modularised builds to optimise footprint limitations. FLNG has a proven ability to provide liquefaction using a range of processes with increased capacities and storage. \nShell’s Prelude\, with a displacement of 600\,000t\, modularised topsides weighing 76\,000t and a production capacity of 3.6 Mtpa of LNG and 1.3 Mtpa of condensate. Prelude provides a detailed insight into how FLNG works\, and the process involved in designing and constructing the largest floating facility ever built.\nThe lessons learnt from the first generation of FLNG facilities have provided robust design standardisation as well as continual optimisation and process improvements to meet the requirements of the new context of floating LNG. This will help to unlock and develop remote and otherwise stranded gas fields\, particularly in regions like Australia. \nAbout the Speakers – Cris Moreno and Edgar Longui \n\nCris Moreno is an oil & gas professional with 20 years’ experience in maturing opportunities across different phases and delivering major capital projects in different roles including engineering\, project management\, construction and commissioning & start-up management. Cris has spent the majority of his career working with Operators including Santos\, Woodside and Shell and has recently taken up role as Director of the Onshore & Offshore Business for TechnipFMC in Australia. Cris is highly capable in leading multi-discipline teams (client\, JV partners & contractors)\, taking responsibility to drive project delivery across multiple countries and experience in design\, construction\, commissioning and operation of LNG\, Oil & Gas processing and floating / fixed production systems\nCris has a lot of experience with FLNG and spent over 9 years on Prelude FLNG working for Shell as Engineering lead in Paris (France) during FEED and detailed design and then transition to Commissioning & Start up Manager in Geoje (South Korea) and then move into Offshore Manager role once Prelude FLNG arrived offshore in Australia.\n\nEdgar Longui has over 14 years’ experience in Project Management internationally (France\, India\, China\, Canada\, Australia\, South Korea) and on overall EPC Oil and Gas Onshore and Offshore experience. Edgar is working as Business Development and Strategy Manager (Onshore – Offshore) in charge of defining the local growth strategy at TechnipFMC and spent more than 5 years as Lead Project Engineer (Deputy Offshore Manager) and Deputy Planning Manager on Prelude FLNG Project (Korean Construction Yard and Offshore Australia). Edgar has overall knowledge of Project Control\, progress\, monitoring and performance management in multicultural environment.\nEdgar started his professional career in Nuclear Power Plant industry on Project Control and Corporate strategy Development Positions. He has a high capacity to adapt and is very business oriented (Engineering degree and MBA). Edgar has a strong problem solving approach and is very result oriented. \nStudents (read below)!!!\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics) and Expro Group\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:Digital Transformation in Action: Reinventing Pipeline Engineering and Design.
DESCRIPTION:Digital Transformation in Action: Reinventing Pipeline Engineering and Design. \nCome along to this month’s SPE Facilities Group learning event to discover how digital innovation\, automation and cloud technologies are being used by engineering teams to deliver work faster\, better and cheaper. \nAutomation in engineering doesn’t just speed up the process that you’re used to\, it fundamentally redefines what’s possible. The project phases that precede a financial investment decision are broadly standardised\, often limited to a high-level review of the scope\, cost\, schedule and risk issues and supported by a deep dive on a few critical topics. Designs are frozen\, contracts are written and many of the outcomes are locked in early on the back of the initial effort that the project could afford. \nAutomation enables a different approach. Highly detailed system models can be tested in the early stages of a project to quantify issues\, understand sensitivities and inform key decisions. A range of proposed solutions can be evaluated in full detail in an afternoon\, then be revisited next week when new information becomes available. An automation-first strategy gives project teams the ability to improve decision confidence in the early stages of a project and react quickly to change once underway\, both of which have a dramatic impact on project outcomes. \nSEA has been using automated engineering to disrupt pipeline design and integrity management practises with their proprietary ICE Platform for the past five years\, and will draw on their global experience to highlight the new approaches worth considering for today’s engineering challenges. \nAbout the Presenter:\nNick is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer\, 40under40 award winner and the Operations Manager at Subsea Engineering Associates. Nick earned degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Commerce from UWA and has since worked in the Perth subsea industry for a decade. Nick has led engineering teams in the development of technology-based solutions to subsea issues and development of in-house software packages and coordinates R&D efforts at Subsea Engineering Associates.

SUMMARY:September'19 Technical Luncheon: CO2 Shallow Release Experiment
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA are proud to present the details of our September technical luncheon. \nUnderstanding the migration of CO2 in the shallow subsurface is the focus of the CSIRO Energy led In-Situ Lab shallow release project near Harvey\, Western Australia. Activities include the design and deployment of surface and bottom-hole equipment to enable injection and monitoring of CO2 migration from the point of release\, at a depth of ~350 m\, into a major fault-zone in the shallow subsurface. The Harvey-2 stratigraphic well originally drilled in 2015 to a depth of 1350 m was recompleted and converted to a 400 m deep CO2 injector. A newly drilled monitoring well was heavily instrumented and located within 10 m of the Harvey-2 injector and a shallow groundwater well (30m) was installed for environmental monitoring. In February 2019 this well configuration was used to conduct a controlled CO2 release experiment using a small volume of food grade CO2. \nPresenter – Arsham Avijegon \nArsham Avijegon is the Director at GASS Petroleum Consulting Pty Ltd. He has a background in Petroleum Engineering with 20+ years’ industry experience in technical\, operational and business management roles spread across Schlumberger\, Chevron & Hess Corporations. SUMMARY:August'19 Technical Lunch: The Exceptional Price Performance of Oil – Explanations and Prospects
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA are proud to present the details of our August technical luncheon. \nOil price developments over the past 45 years have been truly spectacular. In constant money\, prices rose by 759% between 1970-72 and 2012-14. This can be compared with a price index for metals and minerals\, which increased by a mere 38%. Analysis shows that the exceptionality of oil’s upward price push over the past decades cannot be adequately explained by cost-raising depletion or by OPEC interventions. The better explanation is an inadequate development of production capacity\, caused by above-ground hurdles; e.g. onerous fiscal regimes and conflicts over resource rents. \nDespite past experience\, a turning point has been reached where scarcity\, uncertain supply and high prices will be replaced by abundance\, undisturbed availability and suppressed price levels. Technical advances in drilling and hydraulic fracturing\, which led to fast rising oil and natural gas production in the US but is also applicable to unconventional and conventional formations worldwide\, will assure ample and diversified future supply. Although short-run price spikes may occur\, oil prices are unlikely to prevail above the total production costs of new supplies\, which are estimated to settle at $40-60/barrel in the coming two decades. Expanding global gas output and trade will likely depress gas prices as well. It is concluded that oil and gas will continue to play an important role in satisfying energy demand\, from Asia to the Americas\, with innovation that will allow for economic production in spite of low prices. \nPresenter – Roberto F. Aguilera\n \nRoberto F. Aguilera is an Energy Economist with Curtin University Oil and Gas Innovation Centre\, and a consultant with Servipetrol\, Canada. From 2013 to 2017\, he was an analyst with the OPEC Secretariat\, Vienna\, and a co-author of their annual World Oil Outlook. Previous affiliations include the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis; University of Vienna; and Catholic University of Chile. He has participated in numerous energy studies\, including with the World Petroleum Council and US National Petroleum Council. He holds PhD and Master degrees from Colorado School of Mines\, and a Bachelor degree from Haskayne School of Business\, University of Calgary. His publication record comprises The Price of Oil\, a book published by Cambridge University Press in English and Chinese. Roberto is a SPE Distinguished Lecturer 2018-2019. \nStudents (read below)!!! \nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics) and Expro Group\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. This seminar will try to answer that by looking at: \n\nWhat is “formation damage”?\nWhat impact can it have on the field?\nWhat kind of reactions does the reservoir have to operations?\nHow do we identify and understand potential or existing problems?\n\nIf we can answer these questions then there is a much higher chance of proactively avoiding damage in the first place (prevention) or taking the correct steps to mitigate or remove it in existing wells (remediation). Overall the process could be considered as risk reduction by increasing understanding. \nThe seminar will consist of four sessions\, intended to answer these questions both generally and specifically. Each session will consist of background related to the specific topic\, real examples and case studies\, and interactive sessions that will include identifying damage mechanisms\, putting a scope together to identify damage\, and looking at data from studies & drawing conclusions. \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND \nThe seminar will touch on a broad range of issues\, focusing on the wellbore and near-wellbore region and how it interacts with operations: fluids\, hardware\, and production/injection. As such\, attendees could come from a range of disciplines including Reservoir\, Production and Petroleum Engineers; Drilling and Completion Engineers; Exploration\, Operations\, Reservoir\, Production and Petroleum Geologists; Production Chemists And Technologists. \nSEMINAR AGENDA \nSession 1: What is Formation Damage? \n\nHow can we define “formation damage”?\nWhy it is important: financial impact and risk reduction\nHow do operators examine it?\nDamaging mechanisms\nWhen does damage occur and what does it look like?\nHow does IOR/EOR relate to formation damage?\n\nSession 2: Fines Migration \n\nWhat causes fines migration?\nWhy should I care – my reservoir is “clean”\nIdentifying fines migration\nWhat can we do about it/how to use the data\nCase studies – how variable can the impact be?\n\nSession 3: Drilling & Completion \n\nMost common impacts of drilling and completion operations in the near-wellbore\nLaboratory simulation– an introduction to the types of techniques used\nTypical data and what it shows\nInterpretation of results\nCase studies & interactive interpretation session\n\nSession 4: Production & Injection \n\nProduction damage\, including sanding\, scaling\, and treatment/workover\nInjection damage\, including scaling\, water quality\, compatibility\, and microbial damage\nCase studies & interactive interpretation session\n\nSEMINAR INSTRUCTOR\n  \nJustin Green has a BSc degree in Geology and Petroleum Geology from the University of Aberdeen\, and has worked for Premier Oilfield Group (previously known as COREX) since graduating in 2000. He has worked within the Formation Damage laboratory\, geological analysis group\, and is currently involved technical support for operators worldwide as well as laboratory and geological test design\, presentation of reports\, and delivering training courses. Justin was part of the team which developed a new Micro-CT scanning technique\, and co-authored and presented a paper on it at the 2012 SPE European Formation Damage. Justin was the lead author on a recent SPE paper (presented at the 2017 SPE Bergen One Day Seminar)\, written by COREX and Aker BP\, which presented a case study on the nature of drilling mud invasion and clean-up in a Norwegian field. \n

SUMMARY:July'19 Technical Lunch: Autonomous Inflow Control Device: Principle\, Prediction & Reality
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA are proud to present the details of our July technical luncheon. \nIn the current oil and gas environment\, operators have focused on production optimisation\, effectively squeezing every last drop of oil out of their wells. Autonomous Inflow Control Device (AICD) technology has been deployed as part of the completion in old and new wells resulting in increased oil production by reducing water and gas production. For many years\, inflow control devices (ICD)\, which restrict flow by creating additional pressure\, have been used to mitigate this problem. They are however\, passive in nature and after the onset of water or gas breakthrough\, the choke effect cannot be adjusted without intervention. \nThe AICD is an active inflow control device with a self-adjustable design to self-regulate and provide greater choke when unfavorable fluid such as gas and water ingress. This prevents the well from being flooded when unwanted fluids break through\, therefore providing the advantage of being able to even out the inflow into well. In addition\, it will also choke the unfavorable breakthrough sections of the well and producing from remaining sections leading to greater recovery\, lower water and gas production. \nThis technology has helped improve recovery in horizontal well across the globe by reducing gas-oil ratio or water cut of the well\, thus increasing ultimate oil recovery. The key factor to successful application is a systematic approach in prediction modelling and well design workflow to select a well candidate between Passive and Autonomous inflow control device. \n \nPresenter – Dr Ismarullizam Mohd Ismail\nDr Ismarullizam Mohd Ismail\, a SPE Distinguished Lecturer (2018-2019)\, is the Emergent Technology Director for Tendeka based in Aberdeen\, United Kingdom. He received a MSc. and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Leeds\, United Kingdom. He has been working in sand control and inflow control technology for over 15 years in multiple roles\, mainly in offshore operation\, project engineering and product development. His current work involves in innovate new tools to enhanced oil recovery\, developing new inflow control technology\, subsurface modelling and managing an inflow control product line. He has designed and modelled AICD/ICD nozzle completions for more than 100 wells across the globe and he also holds various patents for inflow control design. Prior to joining Tendeka\, Dr Mohd Ismail worked for various major service companies and carried out university research. \nStudents (read below)!!!\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics) and Expro Group\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:June'19 Technical Lunch: Development of Wheatstone Start-up Strategy (including AGM)
DESCRIPTION:Development of Wheatstone Start-up Strategy\nSPE WA are proud to present the details of our June technical luncheon.\nCommencement of initial field production is a unique opportunity to acquire reservoir surveillance information that can inform future reservoir performance. When a field is perturbed from original conditions with first production\, there is potential for reservoir property uncertainty reduction by observing pressure measurements at non-producing wells with downhole pressure gauges and comparing the observed signal to a range of simulation model results. \nThe Wheatstone field\, located offshore northwest Australia\, has recently commenced production start-up to supply gas to the Wheatstone LNG facility. The operational guidelines required each development well to commence with a single well cleanup flow to the Wheatstone platform. The initial single well cleanup flows of the Wheatstone field allowed scope for the selection of a well flow sequence with observation at non-producing wells. \nThe recommended sequence of initial cleanup flows was designed with a focus on reducing reservoir uncertainties via the use of Ensemble Variance Analysis (EVA). EVA is a statistical correlation technique which compares the co-variance between two sets of output data with the same set of inputs. For the Wheatstone field well cleanup flow sequence selection\, the EVA workflow compared the full field Design of Experiments (DoE) study of field depletion and a series of short early production reservoir simulation DoE studies of the gas field. The co-variance between the two DoE studies was evaluated. The objective of the EVA approach was to determine the startup sequence that would allow for the best opportunity for subsurface uncertainty reduction. This objective was met by ranking multiple cleanup flow sequence scenarios. The key factors considered for sequence selection ranking were the impact on business objectives such as future drilling campaign timing and location of infill wells\, as well as insights on reservoir connectivity\, gas initially in place and permeability. \nThe recommended sequence of well cleanup flows uses super-positioning of pressure signal to boost response at observation wells\, which improves measurement resolvability. The selected sequence preserves key observation wells for each manifold and reservoir section for as long as possible before those wells were required to be flowed to meet operational requirements. Operational constraints and variations of the startup plan were considered as part of the evaluation. \nPresenters – Matthew Flett & Paul Connell\n       \nMatthew Flett is Senior Reservoir Engineer at Chevron Australia. He has been with Chevron Australia since 2003 with multiple roles in exploration\, development and production. He holds a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in chemical engineering from the University of Adelaide and a Professional Doctorate in Petroleum Engineering from Curtin University of Technology. He is a SPE member and currently serves with the SPE Western Australian Section Committee. He is the recipient of the 2013 SPE Regional Service Award for the Southern Asia Pacific Region. \nPaul Connell is Senior Production Engineer on the Wheatstone Project at Chevron Australia.   He joined Chevron in 2010 as a Petroleum Engineer and has 19 years of local and overseas experience in the upstream oil & gas industry with Santos\, Fekete\, OMV\, Shell\, Tap Oil and now Chevron. Paul holds a BSc from Swinburne University in Melbourne and Master’s degree in Oil and Gas Engineering from the University of Western Australia and is a SPE member. \nStudents (read below)!!!\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics) and Expro Group\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons.
