SUMMARY:SPE WA Seminar: How to Manage Formation Damage for Maximum Well Performance
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT! \n  \nSEMINAR DESCRIPTION \nWe have all heard about “formation damage”\, but why should we care about it? This seminar will try to answer that by looking at: \n\nWhat is “formation damage”?\nWhat impact can it have on the field?\nWhat kind of reactions does the reservoir have to operations?\nHow do we identify and understand potential or existing problems?\n\nIf we can answer these questions then there is a much higher chance of proactively avoiding damage in the first place (prevention) or taking the correct steps to mitigate or remove it in existing wells (remediation). Overall the process could be considered as risk reduction by increasing understanding. \nThe seminar will consist of four sessions\, intended to answer these questions both generally and specifically. Each session will consist of background related to the specific topic\, real examples and case studies\, and interactive sessions that will include identifying damage mechanisms\, putting a scope together to identify damage\, and looking at data from studies & drawing conclusions. \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND \nThe seminar will touch on a broad range of issues\, focusing on the wellbore and near-wellbore region and how it interacts with operations: fluids\, hardware\, and production/injection. As such\, attendees could come from a range of disciplines including Reservoir\, Production and Petroleum Engineers; Drilling and Completion Engineers; Exploration\, Operations\, Reservoir\, Production and Petroleum Geologists; Production Chemists And Technologists. \nSEMINAR AGENDA \nSession 1: What is Formation Damage? \n\nHow can we define “formation damage”?\nWhy it is important: financial impact and risk reduction\nHow do operators examine it?\nDamaging mechanisms\nWhen does damage occur and what does it look like?\nHow does IOR/EOR relate to formation damage?\n\nSession 2: Fines Migration \n\nWhat causes fines migration?\nWhy should I care – my reservoir is “clean”\nIdentifying fines migration\nWhat can we do about it/how to use the data\nCase studies – how variable can the impact be?\n\nSession 3: Drilling & Completion \n\nMost common impacts of drilling and completion operations in the near-wellbore\nLaboratory simulation– an introduction to the types of techniques used\nTypical data and what it shows\nInterpretation of results\nCase studies & interactive interpretation session\n\nSession 4: Production & Injection \n\nProduction damage\, including sanding\, scaling\, and treatment/workover\nInjection damage\, including scaling\, water quality\, compatibility\, and microbial damage\nCase studies & interactive interpretation session\n\nSEMINAR INSTRUCTOR\n  \nJustin Green has a BSc degree in Geology and Petroleum Geology from the University of Aberdeen\, and has worked for Premier Oilfield Group (previously known as COREX) since graduating in 2000. He has worked within the Formation Damage laboratory\, geological analysis group\, and is currently involved technical support for operators worldwide as well as laboratory and geological test design\, presentation of reports\, and delivering training courses. Justin was part of the team which developed a new Micro-CT scanning technique\, and co-authored and presented a paper on it at the 2012 SPE European Formation Damage. Justin was the lead author on a recent SPE paper (presented at the 2017 SPE Bergen One Day Seminar)\, written by COREX and Aker BP\, which presented a case study on the nature of drilling mud invasion and clean-up in a Norwegian field. \n

SUMMARY:July'19 Technical Lunch: Autonomous Inflow Control Device: Principle\, Prediction & Reality
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA are proud to present the details of our July technical luncheon. \nIn the current oil and gas environment\, operators have focused on production optimisation\, effectively squeezing every last drop of oil out of their wells. Autonomous Inflow Control Device (AICD) technology has been deployed as part of the completion in old and new wells resulting in increased oil production by reducing water and gas production. For many years\, inflow control devices (ICD)\, which restrict flow by creating additional pressure\, have been used to mitigate this problem. They are however\, passive in nature and after the onset of water or gas breakthrough\, the choke effect cannot be adjusted without intervention. \nThe AICD is an active inflow control device with a self-adjustable design to self-regulate and provide greater choke when unfavorable fluid such as gas and water ingress. This prevents the well from being flooded when unwanted fluids break through\, therefore providing the advantage of being able to even out the inflow into well. In addition\, it will also choke the unfavorable breakthrough sections of the well and producing from remaining sections leading to greater recovery\, lower water and gas production. \nThis technology has helped improve recovery in horizontal well across the globe by reducing gas-oil ratio or water cut of the well\, thus increasing ultimate oil recovery. The key factor to successful application is a systematic approach in prediction modelling and well design workflow to select a well candidate between Passive and Autonomous inflow control device. \n \nPresenter – Dr Ismarullizam Mohd Ismail\nDr Ismarullizam Mohd Ismail\, a SPE Distinguished Lecturer (2018-2019)\, is the Emergent Technology Director for Tendeka based in Aberdeen\, United Kingdom. He received a MSc. and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Leeds\, United Kingdom. He has been working in sand control and inflow control technology for over 15 years in multiple roles\, mainly in offshore operation\, project engineering and product development. His current work involves in innovate new tools to enhanced oil recovery\, developing new inflow control technology\, subsurface modelling and managing an inflow control product line. He has designed and modelled AICD/ICD nozzle completions for more than 100 wells across the globe and he also holds various patents for inflow control design. Prior to joining Tendeka\, Dr Mohd Ismail worked for various major service companies and carried out university research. \nStudents (read below)!!!\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics) and Expro Group\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:June'19 Technical Lunch: Development of Wheatstone Start-up Strategy (including AGM)
DESCRIPTION:Development of Wheatstone Start-up Strategy\nSPE WA are proud to present the details of our June technical luncheon.\nCommencement of initial field production is a unique opportunity to acquire reservoir surveillance information that can inform future reservoir performance. When a field is perturbed from original conditions with first production\, there is potential for reservoir property uncertainty reduction by observing pressure measurements at non-producing wells with downhole pressure gauges and comparing the observed signal to a range of simulation model results. \nThe Wheatstone field\, located offshore northwest Australia\, has recently commenced production start-up to supply gas to the Wheatstone LNG facility. The operational guidelines required each development well to commence with a single well cleanup flow to the Wheatstone platform. The initial single well cleanup flows of the Wheatstone field allowed scope for the selection of a well flow sequence with observation at non-producing wells. \nThe recommended sequence of initial cleanup flows was designed with a focus on reducing reservoir uncertainties via the use of Ensemble Variance Analysis (EVA). EVA is a statistical correlation technique which compares the co-variance between two sets of output data with the same set of inputs. For the Wheatstone field well cleanup flow sequence selection\, the EVA workflow compared the full field Design of Experiments (DoE) study of field depletion and a series of short early production reservoir simulation DoE studies of the gas field. The co-variance between the two DoE studies was evaluated. The objective of the EVA approach was to determine the startup sequence that would allow for the best opportunity for subsurface uncertainty reduction. This objective was met by ranking multiple cleanup flow sequence scenarios. The key factors considered for sequence selection ranking were the impact on business objectives such as future drilling campaign timing and location of infill wells\, as well as insights on reservoir connectivity\, gas initially in place and permeability. \nThe recommended sequence of well cleanup flows uses super-positioning of pressure signal to boost response at observation wells\, which improves measurement resolvability. The selected sequence preserves key observation wells for each manifold and reservoir section for as long as possible before those wells were required to be flowed to meet operational requirements. Operational constraints and variations of the startup plan were considered as part of the evaluation. \nPresenters – Matthew Flett & Paul Connell\n       \nMatthew Flett is Senior Reservoir Engineer at Chevron Australia. He has been with Chevron Australia since 2003 with multiple roles in exploration\, development and production. He holds a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in chemical engineering from the University of Adelaide and a Professional Doctorate in Petroleum Engineering from Curtin University of Technology. He is a SPE member and currently serves with the SPE Western Australian Section Committee. He is the recipient of the 2013 SPE Regional Service Award for the Southern Asia Pacific Region. \nPaul Connell is Senior Production Engineer on the Wheatstone Project at Chevron Australia.   He joined Chevron in 2010 as a Petroleum Engineer and has 19 years of local and overseas experience in the upstream oil & gas industry with Santos\, Fekete\, OMV\, Shell\, Tap Oil and now Chevron. Paul holds a BSc from Swinburne University in Melbourne and Master’s degree in Oil and Gas Engineering from the University of Western Australia and is a SPE member. \nStudents (read below)!!!\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics) and Expro Group\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:SPE WA May ’19 Technical Luncheon - The Impact of Global LNG on the Australian Market
DESCRIPTION:The Impact of Global LNG on the Australian Market\nThe cyclical nature of the LNG industry is clearly in motion. The lack of new LNG projects sanctioned in 2016/17\, has inevitably led to the next wave of global LNG supply and we think an LNG bonanza is on the horizon. Since the beginning of the year\, globally we have seen some LNG projects sanctioned\, a flurry of M&A activity and exploration success. In Australia\, we have seen a bounce back in operator confidence\, with a number companies turning back to the drill bit to replicate the successes witnessed overseas. The industry is clearly out of the bottom of the cycle and well into the upward trajectory. This presentation will cover: \n\nOur medium term global LNG market outlook\nOur perspective on the Australasian upstream and LNG development opportunities\nWill the Australian east coast gas market be permanently linked to global LNG market with an import terminal?\n\nPresenter – David Low\, Senior Research Analyst\, Wood Mackenzie\n \nDavid joined Wood Mackenzie in February 2018 as an analyst for the Australasian Upstream Research team. \nPrior to Wood Mackenzie\, David held an Analyst position at Willis Towers Watson in the asset consulting division. He was responsible for fund manager research and providing portfolio construction advice to institutional clients. \nDavid also worked at Chevron Australia for circa 4 years in reservoir and drilling engineering. \nDavid attained a double Bachelor Degree in Petroleum Engineering (Hon) and Commerce from the University of Western Australia. He has also completed his CFA Level 1. \nStudents (read below)!!!\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics) and Expro Group\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:SPE WA May Lecture: Nanotechnology Improves Wellbore Strengthening in Highly Depleted Formations
DESCRIPTION:Nanotechnology Improves Wellbore Strengthening in Highly Depleted Formations\nSPE WA is proud is bring you Ahmed Samir Ibrahim from BHGE to discuss the use of nanotechnology for wellbore strengthening and differential sticking problems in highly depleted formations. \nIt is a challenge to drill in highly deviated or horizontal holes across the highly depleted formations. Wellbore instability\, differential sticking and mud loss are frequently encountered problems while drilling a depleted reservoir in deep HTHP wells. Long-term production caused formation pressures to be highly depleted\, and drilling became more challenging with considerable non-productive time. Therefore\, it is necessary to identify a fluid’s solution when other options with casing zone isolation are not viable. Traditionally\, oil-based mud (OBM) was used while drilling these formations with limited success. \nA customized fluid system was designed to overcome the issue of high overburden pressure in depleted formations targeting effective bridging\, minimizing pore pressure transmission and strengthening the wellbore. A nano-size deformable synthetic polymer\, along with sized calcium carbonate and graphite\, was identified to effectively plug the pore throats and minimized the fluid invasion\, which was confirmed by particle plugging tests. \nA well section was identified to comingle the highly depleted and pressurized formations. This was the first attempt on a high-angle well with deep drilling operations in Kuwait and was performed to facilitate the successful drilling of the reservoir. Traditional OBM was converted to a customized fluid system using a nano-size polymer and sized bridging additives based on proprietary software selection and series of laboratory tests. Drilling\, coring and logging were successfully performed for the first time in the commingle section without incident. There was no wellbore instability or differential sticking tendencies\, less torque and drag\, as well as enhanced wellbore cleaning in the high-angle sections. \nThis paper also presents the some of the successful applications of the nano-size deformable polymer in OBM to drill highly depleted formations in HTHP wells managing up to 3500 psi overbalance across highly permeable formations. \nSpeaker: Ahmed Samir Ibrahim\, Drilling & Completion Fluids\, BHGE\n \nAhmed graduated in Chemical Engineering from Cairo University in Egypt in 2004. He started his professional career as a Drilling Fluids Field Engineer with MI-SWACO (A Schlumberger Company) in 2005 working on several onshore and offshore wells for several clients in Egypt. Ahmed joined Baker Hughes as Field Engineer in 2010 working on onshore development and deep drilling wells in Kuwait. He was promoted to Drilling Fluids Operations Coordinator in 2014 handling development drilling operations in Kuwait and moved to Perth Australia as the Sales Manager for drilling and completion fluids product line for BHGE in 2018. \nCo-author and presenter of 2 SPE papers: \n\nSPE-171411-MS\, presented in APOGCE in Adelaide\, Australia in 2014.\nSPE-183182-MS\, presented in ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi\, UAE in 2016.

SUMMARY:Wax Management: Comprehensive Approach to Assure Flow in Harsh Climate (Brownfield Conditions)
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA is proud is bring you Dr. Sameh Macary\, SPE Distinguished Lecturer\, to discuss wax management in brownfield assets. \nWax deposition significantly affects the deliverability of produced fluid along its journey from porous media through the wellbore to the production facilities. Solutions for wax management include\, but are not limited to\, chemical\, mechanical and/or thermal or a combination. Wax management has always been a key concern for Dragon Oil offshore Turkmenistan. Wax depositions in the wellbore of most producers has driven Dragon Oil to adopt different approaches to handle this critical issue. However\, optimizing these approaches is of a paramount importance\, especially in today’s industry situation and considering the weather changes and logistical challenges while working on controlling wax related issues. \nA wide range of wax management strategies is practiced to prevent\, mitigate and remediate wax deposition. Several studies have been conducted to investigate root causes and to develop the most practical solution for wax management starting from downhole to the onshore facilities. Chemical injection and mechanical Slick Line (SLK) well interventions are the techniques most commonly practiced in Dragon Oil to manage the deposited wax in the wellbore (~ 100 jobs of wax cut/week and ~ 700 liters/day of wax inhibitor-optimized dosage). Compliance Sheets were designed and being optimized on daily basis to manage such intensive well intervention. Modifications to drilling Basis of Design (BoD) allowing chemicals injection at different depths/dosages and wellhead area thermal treatment are examples of precautions that being followed to secure wax free flow. \nWells that are completed in “A-Sand” reservoir have severe wax challenges due to high wax appearance temperature (WAT). Having BHFP < BPP and WHT < WAT makes wax precipitation and deposition an imminent phenomenon. In addition\, several studies showed that the above combination along with fluid properties and potentially low velocity contribute to more wax deposition in the tubing. \nFurthermore\, harsh weather adds more challenges to the Company’s efforts to manage flow assurance related issues. For example\, delays in Slick Line operations due to difficulties in mobilizing SLK units allow more soft wax to build up and become harder at different depths. As a result\, significant disturbance in the wells productivity and flowlines deliverability is observed causing losses in the field total production. Plugging of chemical injection systems (control lines and nipple)\, as first guard in some wells\, adds another complication to deal with de-waxing management in the field. \nDragon Oil has also successfully applied a few surface thermal means to manage wax deposition in surface facilities that will be discussed also in this study highlighting monitoring\, surveillance and optimization efforts. \nIt was observed that optimizing Wax Inhibitor (WI) dosage help in decreasing the frequency of mechanical de-waxing operations. Obviously higher WI dosage rate increases the operational costs and potential side effects (i.e.\, emulsion\, foaming\, etc.). Dragon Oil developed a practical approach to thoroughly monitor all wellhead related parameters and managed to add value through the comprehensive optimization cost/effect versus costs/risks of wax management by mechanical\, chemical and thermal means. \nSpeaker: Sameh Macary\, Ph. D. Pet. Eng.\, SPE Distinguished Lecturer (2007-2008)\, Dragon Oil\, Turkmenistan \n \nLast three years\, Dr. Sameh Macary has been with Dragon Oil – Turkmenistan as Senior Petroleum Engineer. He moved to Dragon after 8 years with Chevron in Australia NWS Asset and Kazakhstan Tengizchevroil. Before Chevron\, he was the Chief Reservoir Engineer in IPR Group of Companies\, a Dallas based Co. His career in Egypt includes 8 years with GUPCO (the biggest Egyptian JV with AMOCO\, then BP) and 3 years with DCS-Schlumberger as part-time consultant. Dr. Macary was the Production Department Head and Petroleum Engineering Professor in Egyptian Petroleum Research Institute. \nSameh got his PE degree with Honor in 1981 from Cairo University and got appointed as instructor for two years in the Eng. Math & Physics Dept. Mr. Macary holds M. Sc. (1985) and Ph. D. (1988) degrees in Petroleum Eng. from State University of Oil & Chemistry in Azerbaijan. \nDr. Macary served in SPE Egypt\, Western Australia\, Atyrau and Ashgabat Sections in almost all positions. He represented Egypt in the ME SPE Council\, participated in organizing a number of SPE ATW and Conferences. He has authored and co-authored 22 SPE Papers. In 2006\, Dr. Macary was awarded the Regional Technical Award for Reservoir Description and Dynamics in the Middle East. He became a SPE Distinguished Lecturer for the season 2007-2008. He became the recipient of the “Outstanding Section Chairman Award in 2015” and the International DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal in 2017.

SUMMARY:SPE WA March ’19 Technical Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:“Managing complex\, laterally and vertically compartmentalized reservoirs in a subsea tie-back via smart well completions – Case Studies”\nSPE WA are proud to present the details of our March technical luncheon. \nThis presentation encapsulates case studies on reservoir and well management of two laterally and vertically compartmentalized Western Australian Triassic gas condensate reservoirs\, developed by five multi-zone “smart” wells with sand control\, tied back to an offshore platform via a subsea network.  In managing assets with such complexity\, it is imperative to understand reservoir performance on a zone-by-zone basis. Quantifying performance allows management of flux through downhole sand control systems and optimisation of offtake strategy. \nThis presentation showcases how remotely-operated selective completions (“smart” wells with permanent downhole gauges for each completion coupled with subsea flow meters for each well) have been instrumental in facilitating prompt analysis of zonal reservoir performance and thus in yielding insights into reservoir connectivity\, and allowing optimisation of zonal contributions. Various case studies will be presented showing how reservoir surveillance data is acquired and interpreted to optimize well zone-by-zone production and to manage flux limits on each producing zone. These case studies will include manipulation of downhole valves to provide information for established techniques such as interference testing and P/Z analysis. \nData acquisition and interpretation challenges\, such as non-reliability of data from downhole gauges and compromised zonal isolations\, are highlighted along with fit-for-purpose solutions developed to overcome those challenges. \n  \nPresenter – Abid Ghous\, Reservoir Engineer\, Woodside Energy\n \nAbid Ghous is working as Reservoir Engineer at Woodside Energy Ltd. During his 10 year career\, he has worked on diverse range of projects comprising Greenfield\, Brownfield\, Reservoir Operations and Long term business planning.  He obtained his PhD and Masters in Petroleum Engineering from UNSW\, Sydney. He has authored\, and reviewed several technical papers throughout his academic and practicing career as a Petroleum Engineer. He is a longstanding member of SPE International\, having served on the technical program committee for several iterations of the SPE APOGCE. He obtained BSc Petroleum Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology (UET)\, Lahore. \nStudents (read below)!!!\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors\, tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics) and Expro Group\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:SPE WA Distinguished Lecture Series - February ’19 Technical Luncheon - "Conventional & Unconventional Reservoirs; What is In & Out in Today’s Pressure and Rate Transient Analysis"
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished Lecture Series – “Conventional & Unconventional Reservoirs; What is In & Out in Today’s Pressure and Rate Transient Analysis”\nSPE WA is proud is bring you Medhat (Med) Kamal to discuss the ever relevant Pressure and Rate Transient Analysis. \nTransient data is rich in information about the dynamic characteristics of the well/reservoir system. It has been used extensively by petroleum engineers since the 1920’s. Sustained development in this area is necessitated by three factors: \n(1) Changes in the types of reservoirs we produce (e.g. conventional\, unconventional) and their stages of recovery (e.g.\, primary\, secondary)\, \n(2) New tools (e.g. formation testers\, permanent downhole gauges)\, and \n(3) Advances in solution techniques (e.g.\, use of computers\, deconvolution). Today\, the value and use of transient data are at an all-time high. \nSeveral crucial technology advancements were achieved during the last 10-15 years. The aim of this lecture is to update the audience about the increased capabilities of Pressure and Rate Transient analyses (PTA and RTA respectively) and how to use them to optimize reservoir management. \nAfter a brief review of existing methods in PTA / RTA\, new developments will be discussed with special emphasis on integration and the role of the engineer to obtain a sensible and consistent reservoir model. Practical applications will be discussed including: characterizing unconventional reservoirs by combining multiple measurements\, determining permeability and fluid saturations  under multi-phase flow conditions\, integrating the analytical and numerical solutions\, combining single and multi-well tests to characterize the reservoir anisotropy\, calculating the average reservoir pressure under non-uniform production and boundary conditions\, and using continuous measurements of well pressures to integrate PTA and RTA to characterize reservoirs. For each case\, best practices and their limitations will be presented. \n  \nPresenter – Medhat (Med) Kamal\, Chevron Emeritus Fellow and SPE Honorary member\n \nMedhat (Med) Kamal is a Chevron Emeritus Fellow and SPE Honorary member with over 40 years of industry experience in well testing\, reservoir description and production and reservoir engineering. He is the editor and lead author of SPE Monograph 23 “Transient Well Testing”\, and has published 35+ technical papers in SPE journals. He holds BSc (Hons.) from Cairo University\, and MS and PhD from Stanford University in petroleum engineering. Kamal was an SPE board member and served as the Executive Editor of SPEREE. He received several regional and international awards including the Cedric Ferguson Medal and SPE Formation Evaluation Award. \n  \nStudents (read below)!!!\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics) and Expro Group\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:SPE WA Distinguished Lecture Series - Evening Event - CO2 in the Subsurface - From EOR to Storage
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished Lecture Series – “CO2 in the Subsurface – From EOR to Storage”\nSPE WA is proud to bring you Gary Teletzke\, Senior Technical Advisor for Enhanced Oil Recovery at ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company. \nThe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have issued recent reports suggesting that deployment of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) can significantly reduce the cost of achieving CO2 emission reduction targets.  However\, several questions remain: Under what circumstances will large-scale deployment take place? Where and when will this occur? How large a role will CCS play in stabilizing atmospheric concentrations of CO2? I will review the current status of CO2-EOR and geologic storage focusing on subsurface lessons learned and their implications for large-scale CCS. \nOur industry has a long history with CO2-EOR that provides a strong experience base for CO2 storage. However\, CO2-EOR alone will be insufficient to meet emission reduction targets and storage in deep saline aquifers is also being investigated.Experience from operating CCS projects shows that subsurface storage capacity in saline formations can be limited by dynamic injectability factors. Hundreds of years of CO2 storage capacity is potentially available\, even after accounting for dynamic limitations\, but the areal distribution of potential storage capacity is widely varied. Geologic and reservoir engineering studies will be essential for identifying storage sites having adequate capacity\, containment\, and injectivity. Petroleum engineers will play a key role in these studies. \nAgenda\n17:30 Networking drinks (Beer & Wine included) \n18:15 Evening buffet \n18:30 Presentation \n19:30 Close \n  \nPresenter – Gary Teletzke\, Senior Technical Advisor for Enhanced Oil Recovery at ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company\n \nGary has led research projects related to gas injection EOR\, chemical EOR\, and compositional reservoir simulation. He has also led several EOR field studies\, integrating laboratory work\, reservoir simulation\, and pilot testing. For the past ten years\, he has provided technical leadership to research efforts on CO2 sequestration. He has published more than 40 technical papers and patents. He has organized numerous SPE conferences over the past two decades and currently serves as Associate Editor of SPEREE. He was named an SPE Distinguished Member in 2013. He received a BS in chemical engineering from Northwestern University and PhD in chemical engineering from University of Minnesota. \n  \nStudents (read below)!!!\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics) and Expro Group\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:SPE WA Distinguished Lecture Series - November ’18 Technical Luncheon - 4D Seismic History Matching
DESCRIPTION:Distinguished Lecture Series – 4D Seismic History Matching\nSPE WA are proud to present the details of our November technical luncheon; This presentation will show how time-lapse or 4D seismic data can be used as an additional constraint to history match reservoir models in a 4D Seismic History Matching (4D SHM) workflow. 4D seismic provides an independently measured and spatially extensive dataset that complements the field’s production data. \nIt is sensitive to fluid saturation and pressure changes and provides information on the dynamic behavior of the reservoirs. It is also sensitive to the geological properties and informs the geological model too. 4D SHM is the process of developing reservoir models that are consistent with both the observed production data and the 4D seismic data. When 4D seismic data are available the reservoir model can be used to generate synthetic 4D data. Discrepancies between those two datasets are used to update the models and to attain a seismic history matched simulation model. A case study will be presented where 4D SHM was applied to the Harding and Gryphon fields in the North Sea. It was used to develop regional geological and simulation models for a major gas development project. The combination of geological knowledge\, reservoir simulation and 4D SHM led to greater confidence in the final models. 4D SHM is an evolving technology\, so the presentation will conclude with a discussion on the current status of the technology and some of its research and development directions. \nPresenter – Paul Mitchell\, TAQA Bratani Ltd\n \n\nPaul Mitchell is the Discipline Lead for Geophysics at TAQA in the UK. He has broad ranging responsibilities and is a technical authority for geophysics within the company. Paul has thirty years of experience in exploration\, development and production geophysics from around the world. He spent a number of years working in ExxonMobil’s Upstream Research Center in Houston specializing in seismic depth imaging\, 3D volume interpretation and 4D seismic. He is currently working within a multi-disciplinary team developing subsurface models for a large gas development project in the North Sea. His current interests are in 4D seismic and its application to 4D Seismic History Matching and he has presented his work at numerous international conferences. He holds a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Southampton and a M.Sc. in Exploration Geophysics from Imperial College in London. He is the Founding President of the EAGE Local Chapter in Aberdeen and is Chair of the SPE Seismic 2018 conference. \nStudents (read below)!!!\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors tNavigator (Rock Flow Dynamics) and Expro Group\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:SPE WA November Lecture: Utilizing Python and Optimization Algorithms to Extend Gas Plateau
DESCRIPTION:Unlike their oil counterparts\, the optimization of gas fields is a matter of providing the right quantity of the right quality product at the right time. An optimized gas field requires careful planning to ensure production levels that satisfy existing contracts. For this reason\, it’s in the operator’s best interest to find efficient ways of extending the production plateau to prolong the life of the field and maximize returns. In this presentation we will see how to utilize optimization algorithms together with advanced reservoir simulation techniques to help us select the most efficient field development strategy and extend the production plateau of a field. \nSpeaker:  Andres Bracho\, Reservoir Engineer\, Rock Fluid Dynamics \nAndres Bracho is a young professional working as an engineer at Rock Flow Dynamics in Perth. He is experienced in reservoir simulation\, integrated asset modelling\, and commercial gas operations in Australia. Andres has a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Western Australia and a master’s degree from Curtin University. His primary focus is on finding interesting applications to well established reservoir engineering techniques to improve existing workflows. \n
