SUMMARY:June SPE WA Lecture: Geomechanics and Microstructure of Faults: An Experimental Perspective
DESCRIPTION:David N. Dewhurst\, Silvio Giger\, Bozkurt Ciftci\, Ausama Giwelli\, Claudio Delle Piane\, Jeremie Dautriat and Ben Clennell \nGeomechanics and microstructure of faults are intimately linked due to both physical and chemical processes which can have a significant effect on rock strength and flow properties. This presentation summarises the controls on fault rock strength\, shale smear continuity in siliciclastic rocks\, fault transmissibility in carbonates and the links between microfabric and permeability anisotropy development in sheared clays. These conclusions have been reached through the use of multiple geomechanical and microstructural techniques\, including triaxial\, ring shear and direct shear box testing supplemented by optical and electron microscopy and measurements of petrophysical properties such as porosity and permeability. \nExamples using such approaches are used to highlight how kinematic and diagenetic histories control rock strength. Cementation is shown to generate stronger fault rocks\, but continued reactivation indicates that the cementation results in a competency contrast which promotes failure along the boundary of the cemented fault zone and reservoir rock. In contrast\, alteration of load bearing feldspars to kaolinite resulted in reservoir and fault rocks having similar geomechanical properties but friction coefficients for a granular rock are low as a result of the alteration of the rock load bearing framework. \nDirect shear tests were used to evaluate fault zone development and clay smearing in siliciclastic rocks. A large shear box was used and variables tested included displacement (up to 10x clay layer thickness)\, bedding dip\, plus sand and clay properties (porosity\, water content and consolidation state) with fluid flow across the clay being measured. The breakdown of the clay seal was linked to its clay content while the smear continuity was related to increased effective normal stress during shearing but not to the stiffness or ductility of the clay layer. The formation of clay smears was governed by brittle processes (segmentation\, abrasion and grain crushing)\, rather than by drag\, plasticity or clay injection. Seal breach by fluids was not always achieved even in the case of discontinuous smears due to abrasion and grain crushing of the reservoir sand. \nThe direct shear behaviour of carbonates was also investigated\, testing porous\, vuggy travertine samples. Tests were performed in both static and dynamic mode\, monitoring fluid flow both during and after deformation stages. The mechanical behaviour of the travertine was similar for slip between 20-120 mm\, with low strains dominated by fracturing and high strain by gouge development. Irrespective of the effective stress level\, dynamic fault transmissibility decreased for all samples. Cylindrical core plugs were taken across the developed fault zones to reactivate them in triaxial tests. Frictional hardening was noted in these tests while permeability continued to decrease due to further development of fault gouge. Once gouge develops\, transmissibility is permanently decreased and reactivation has no impact. \nFinally\, deformation to very high strains can be achieved using ring shear devices. A sealed ring shear permeameter was used to deform pure clays and remoulded clays. Comparisons of porosity and permeability were made to oedometric tests to simulate the same sediments undergoing one-dimensional compaction. In all cases\, shear parallel static permeability was found to be similar to the permeability of one dimensionally consolidated sediments\, while shear normal permeability was one to two orders of magnitude lower. Microfabrics observed in optical and scanning electron microscopy showed the development of flattening fabrics\, Riedel shears and shear parallel through-going fractures\, which were interpreted to obstruct the shear normal flow. \nOverall\, geomechanical experiments combined with microstructural observations and petrophysical measurements can shed light on meso- to micro-scale fault zone processes and aid us in evaluating more complex situations observed in the subsurface. Accepting that challenges with scaling exist\, the intermediate scale of the large shear box experiments starts to provide some data that can be evaluated in terms of larger scale bulk fault seal algorithms as well as enlighten us as to fault zone processes and products with their concomitant effect on rock properties. \nPresenter:  Dr. David Dewhurst\, Senior Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO Energy \n“Dave Dewhurst is a senior principal research scientist at CSIRO Energy in Perth\, Australia. His research career started looking at application of soil mechanics techniques to modern day accretionary wedges\, moved into physical properties of clays and shales and then into polygonal fault systems in fine grained sediments before moving to Australia. At CSIRO\, he has worked on fault and top seals\, overpressure\, overburden/gas shale properties and more general rock properties for applications in petroleum geoscience and CO2 storage”.

SUMMARY:SPE WA June '18 Tech Luncheon - SPE Distinguished Lecturer; Maximizing the Value of a Mature Asset
DESCRIPTION:Integrated Historical Data Workflow: Maximizing the Value of a Mature Asset\nOn the 21st June\, SPE WA is proud to bring you another SPE Distinguished Lecturer\, Anne Valentine\, to Perth to showcase ways in which you can maximise value in mature fields. \nIndustry studies show that mature fields currently account for over 70% of the world’s oil and gas production. Increasing production rates and ultimate recovery in these fields in order to maintain profitable operations\, without increasing costs\, is a common challenge. \nThis lecture addresses techniques to extract maximum value from historical production data using quick workflows based on common sense. Extensive in-depth reservoir studies are obviously very valuable\, but not all situations require these\, particularly in the case of brown fields where the cost of the study may outweigh the benefits of the resulting recommendations. \nThis lecture presents workflows based on Continuous Improvement/LEAN methodology which are flexible enough to apply to any mature asset for short and long term planning. A well published\, low permeability brown oil field was selected to retroactively demonstrate the workflows\, as it had an evident workover campaign in late 2010 with subsequent production increase. Using data as of mid-2010\, approximately 40 wells were identified as under-performing due to formation damage or water production problems\, based on three days of analyses. The actual performance of the field three years later was then revealed along with the actual interventions performed. The selection of wells is compared to the selection suggested by the workflow\, and the results of the interventions are shown. The field’s projected recovery factor was increased by 5%\, representing a gain of 1.4 million barrels of oil. \n  \nSpeaker: Anne Valentine (Schlumberger)\n \nAnne Valentine is a Principal Instructor for Production Engineering at Schlumberger. She has 35 years of experience in Canada and France in well and reservoir performance analysis\, particularly related to waterflooding\, unconventional reservoirs and candidate recognition for production enhancement. She built her expertise in performance analysis workflows and software through working on the Cold Lake heavy oil field as a reservoir and field engineer at Esso Resources Canada Limited\, then consulting for Halliburton before joining Schlumberger in 2001. A graduate in Chemical Engineering from Queen’s University in Canada\, she has co-authored papers on analysis techniques for polymer floods\, waterflood optimization and shale gas forecasting. \n  \nStudents (read below)!!! \nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors Rock Flow Dynamics and Expro\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. Please fill out an application form\, explaining why you are interested in attending the SPE WA technical luncheons. Successful applicants will be notified via email. SUMMARY:Technical Evening- ADVANCED ENGINEERING CRITICAL ASSESSMENT IN STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY MANAGEMENT - 19 of June - FREE!
DESCRIPTION:ADVANCED ENGINEERING CRITICAL ASSESSMENT IN STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY MANAGEMENT \nAssessing crack-like defects is one of the key components in structural integrity management for pipelines and for general onshore/offshore facilities. Typically\, the criticality of the crack-like defect is assessed through application of Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA). Conventionally\, this assessment is carried out based on the Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD) approach using guidelines in standards such BS7910 or API579. \nThe use of FAD-based approach was originally standardized for nuclear power plant and then extended into applications in oil and gas industry. The approach is semi-analytical and has very low computational cost\, which make it attractive in the oil and gas industry. The FAD-based approach itself is essentially stress-based and has been proved to be overly conservative past pipeline projects. However\, application of this approach for a strain based design is still questionable (for both conservatisms and non-conservatisms) and needs justification as well as modifications. \nThis presentation presents two state-of-the-art developments for ECA\, namely Probabilistic ECA (PECA) and Strain-Based ECA (SBECA). Both developments target more accurate assessment of the criticality to enable relaxation of unnecessary design or installation conditions. PECA is an effort to reduce the unnecessary conservatisms due to a very low joint probability of occurrence of bounding values for key parameters. Meanwhile\, SBECA is an effort to utilize the strain hardening regime of material more accurately. Discussions on how these two advanced ECA frameworks can be applied in phases of a project and associate cost-effectiveness will also be presented. \nBrief bio of the presenter: \nDr. Joe Tran is a Senior Engineering Specialist at INTECSEA Perth Office. He has more than ten years of experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA)\, specialized in fatigue\, damage/failure analysis and fracture mechanics. He has a solid background in fracture mechanics and FEA and significant working experience in Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) as well as in Fitness-for-Service (FFS) studies. \nHe has performed ECA and FFS for subsea pipelines\, ranging from C-Mn pipes to CRA Clad/Lined pipes\, and onshore facilities\, such as storage tank and fittings\, using various techniques\, from using analytical solution approach to developing three-dimensional fracture mechanics-based numerical model. Additionally\, Joe has performed probabilistic approach for various ECA and FFS projects. \nAdditionally\, he is hosting a JIP on strain based ECA\, which is participated by operators\, installation contractors and standard writer. He is also developing the PECA framework for an operator. \n \n

SUMMARY:May SPE WA Lecture: Unconventional shale gas reservoir characterization of the Goldwyer shale in Canning Basin\, Western Australia
DESCRIPTION:The Canning Basin is a large intracratonic – underexplored Palaeozoic sedimentary basin in Western Australia. Wells drilled in this basin generally have low success rates\, with less than 5% of wells yielding commercial quantities for production in the conventional realm. This suggests a better strategy may be to target direct development of source rocks using unconventional production techniques. A report from the US Energy Information Administration (2013) suggested that the Canning Basin has the best potential for unconventional hydrocarbon production in Australia and ranked the basin eight in the world for same. This study has utilized an integrated approach to characterize the potential shale reservoir in the Broome Platform\, Canning Basin\, to understand the geochemical property distribution\, including organic richness\, maturity and the potential for the source rock to generate hydrocarbon through laboratory analysis and statistical simulations. Furthermore\, burial history curves are constructed across the sub-basin\, using basin specific organofacies and reaction kinetics. Preliminary integration of these geochemical information lead to the delineation of potential geochemical sweetspots in the studied sub-basin. This study aims to provide additional geochemical information necessary for a potentially successful hydrocarbon exploration campaign. \n  \nPresenter: Lukman Johnson\, PhD candidate- Curtin University\nLukman Johnson is a third year PhD student in the Unconventional Gas Research Group in the Department of Petroleum Engineering. He holds a Master’s Degree in Applied Petroleum Geosciences from the University of Derby\, UK and worked both as a lecturer in the University of Ilorin\, Nigeria and as a geologist with Geoverge Nigeria Limited. Lukman’s interests include organic geochemistry\, petroleum systems analysis and unconventional shale gas exploration.

SUMMARY:SPE WA May '18 Technical Luncheon - Insights from Gorgon
DESCRIPTION:Image courtesy of Chevron Australia \n04/05/18 update – \nDue to unforeseen circumstances\, this event date has been changed to the 23rd May. If you have already registered under the pretense of an event date of the 10th May\, SPE WA will be in contact to reconfirm you registration or offer you a full refund. SPE WA apologises for any inconvenience.\nKind regards\,\nMitchell Sherston (SPE WA Chairperson)\nSynergy\, singularity and big gas start-up; insights from Gorgon\nIt is with great pleasure that SPE WA hosts Chevron Australia on 10th May to bring you “Synergy\, singularity and big gas start-up; insights from Gorgon”. \nThe Jansz-Io and Gorgon gas fields are two super-giant gas fields\, delivering production to the 15.6 MTPA Gorgon LNG project off Australia’s North West coast. Come and listen to Alan Morrison and Jason Beard as they take you through an overview of upstream performance of both the Jansz-Io and Gorgon gas fields during start-up and transition to steady-state operations\, with a focus on navigating both the synergies and uniqueness offered by these two previously sleeping giants. \nThe identification and capture of meaningful ‘wins’ from synergies between the two fields was an initial focus. Being first online\, Jansz-Io paved the way in this regard\, with some commonalities to Gorgon start-up coming in the form of interference testing\, max rate well proving\, integrity management\, production data integration and Inlet facility constraints\, among others. \nCharacteristics unique to each field tend of course to drive the deployment of several field-specific start-up strategies (and often-times\, resources). The categories of uniqueness span the upstream system\, from sandface to slugcatcher\, with examples including reservoir complexity\, well clean-up considerations\, and subsea equipment configurations and reliability. \nSpeakers\n \n  \nAlan Morrison is the Jansz-Io / Gorgon Base Business PE Lead as well as part time Production Engineering Functional Advisor at Chevron Australia. Commencing with Texaco as a Petroleum Engineer in Aberdeen in 1988\, Alan has 29 years of industry experience with Texaco\, Chevron Texaco and now Chevron. He has a BSc (Hons) in Mining and Petroleum Engineering from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. \n \n  \n  \nJason Beard is currently a Production Engineer with the Gorgon team. He joined Chevron back in 2006 as a Process Engineer Intern and has since held roles as a Petroleum Engineer (Wheatstone)\, Reservoir Engineer (Gorgon)\, Production Engineer\, Operations Lead and Subsea Well Intervention Project Manager (all three roles with Chevron’s Tahiti project). Jason holds a BEng (Hons) in Oil and Gas Engineering and a BCom (Corporate Finance\, Business Law) both from the University of Western Australia. \nStudents (read below)!!! \nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors Rock Flow Dynamics and Expro\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:Joint Facilities Group & Flow Assurance Technical Section Technical Evening - Wax Measurements and Modelling Uncertainties
DESCRIPTION:Wax Measurements and Modelling Uncertainties \nby  Dr Bazlee Matzain\, Principal Consultant\, Flow Assurance\, Wood \nThe potential for wax deposition is traditionally assessed by integrating wax measurement with production system modelling.  Most of the current state-of-the-art laboratory methods and the widely accepted modelling techniques have been successfully used to assess the likelihood and severity of wax deposition in production systems. However\, there are still some key uncertainties resulting in undesirable outcomes. This talk will outline the known unknowns and the available techniques that can be used to resolve these uncertainties in. The aim of this talk is to evaluate what is still needed to resolve these uncertainties. \n About Dr Bazlee Matzain: A specialist in flow assurance engineering with more than 25 years of oil-gas industry experience. He has been involved in numerous complex flow assurance issues/trouble-shooting\, field operations\, and optimization studies. His work experience includes being a researcher for PETRONAS\, a lead flow assurance engineer for a large engineering company and a consulting manager for a software engineering company. He was the lead researcher that developed the “MATZAIN” wax deposition model currently used in OLGA. He holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toledo and MSc and PhD in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Tulsa. He is a Chartered Professional Engineer with Engineers Australia.

SUMMARY:Young Professionals Tech 101 Series: Will your Well Test Flow? - A Case Study in Exploration of the Exmouth Sub-basin
DESCRIPTION:30 spots available – sign up below to claim your spot \nDecision Making in Exploration: The Novara discovery well was drilled and tested in 1982\, but failed to flow oil to surface. The 16.7⁰ API dead oil recovered from the test string was judged too difficult to produce and no further exploration drilling in the area occurred for many years. Despite discoveries of similarly biodegraded oils at Vlaming Head-1\, West Muiron-5\, Wandoo\, Vincent and Enfield\, decision-makers were reluctant to commit to drilling the Coniston prospect directly adjacent to the Novara structure for concerns any oil discovery would be unproduceable. \nThis case study will explore how to extract maximum value from scarce data through identifying parameters with greatest impact and how missing data can be inferred indirectly or simply estimated where their influence on results is minimal.\nMark will discuss application of basic Petroleum Engineering skills to a multidisciplinary study of an exploration prospect in the Exmouth Sub-Basin leading to successful drilling and testing of a discovery well. \n  \nMark Jackson: Mark is a Petroleum Engineer with over 37 years of experience.  His roles have included wireline logging with Schlumberger in the North Sea\, Spain and Australia.  Onshore production and reservoir engineering in the Eromanga\, Surat\, Amadeus and Perth Basins.  Nodal\, production optimisation\, PVT and reservoir engineering with Petroleum Experts Ltd in Edinburgh before joining BHP Petroleum in Melbourne as a Petroleum Engineer supporting exploration and production operations in Australia\, Iran\, Pakistan\, Thailand and the US Gulf of Mexico. He subsequently moved to Perth with BHP with roles including North West Shelf Joint Venture Technical Support Lead and Production Engineering Manager for BHP’s operated production in Australia.  He recently retired from BHP to pursue a research program addressing formation and flow properties of oilfield emulsions. \n  \nCost:          This event is FREE  and is proudly sponsored by Halliburton Australasia. \nWhen:        Tuesday\, 8th May. 11:30 – 13:30 (Registration\, food and networking before talk at 12pm) \nWhere:      Halliburton Board Room\, Level 27\, 140 St Georges Terrace \nLunch will be provided \nSpecial Thanks to this event’s sponsor:

SUMMARY:April SPE WA Lecture: Coding for Petroleum Engineers - An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:How safe are petroleum engineers from automation? Not as safe as you might think.  This presentation provides an introduction to practical programming with Python and applies it to petroleum engineering. It also fits the ‘do more with less’ mantra that the industry is facing. It will discuss who is already using programming in the industry and show you how to start programming today.  While programming can seem daunting to first time users\, the core programming concepts will be introduced using a spreadsheet and comparing it to basic Python methods. The presentation will also show you when and why to use programming over spreadsheets and demonstrate a simple Python program to generate bulk simulation case sensitivities. \nSpeaker: Jared Hammond\,  Senior Reservoir Engineer\, Consultant \nJared Hammond is a Senior Reservoir Engineer and Programmer with eight years of experience and has spent the past three years working with the Python programming language. As a contract reservoir engineer by day he is working for PetroAus clients on simulation studies and integrated production modelling. As a self-taught programmer by night he has created programs that make his engineering workflows faster.  Taking his Python knowledge outside of reservoir engineering\, he created OneOilJobSearch.com which is also written in Python. Each hour it searches hundreds of job titles across 50+ websites\, normalises them and puts all oil jobs on one site.  Jared holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Petroleum) from the University of Adelaide.

SUMMARY:SPE Facilities Group Technical Evening -Getting ‘More for Less’ – Making Not Normally Manned Facilities Work by Andrew Gifford
DESCRIPTION:Getting ‘More for Less’ – Making Not Normally Manned Facilities Work \nMany operators around the world are looking at applying new technologies to allow offshore facilities to operate unmanned.  This strategy can potentially provide a step change in safety and significantly reduce operating costs.  The Angel development on the NWS provides a good example of what can be done.  Recent technological advances potentially enable this benchmark to be extended to a greater number of developments\, more remote locations and more complex processing arrangements. \n About the presenter: Andrew Gifford is the Regional Director of Granherne in APAC.  He has over 25 years of process engineering and development engineering experience.  Andrew held the Lead Process engineering role on the Angel Development from the concept stages through to completion of detailed design\, giving him huge insights into the issues of NNM facilities and how to make these successful.  More recently he has been involved in extending the lessons learned to more complex NNM facilities not only in Australia but in other global locations as the oil price fluctuations have challenged operators to be more productive in a leaner environment .

SUMMARY:March SPE WA Lecture: Validation of Water Saturation Profile in Reservoir Model
DESCRIPTION:This session is a one-hour Lecture about validation of water saturation profile in geological/ reservoir model. The session is FREE for SPE members only. \nBefore using reservoir models for history matching\, the model needs to be validated for the integrity and consistency of geological structure\, rock\, and other static properties. Leaving any shortcomings\, discrepancies\, conflicts\, or inconsistencies among such data could potentially ruin the whole simulation work. Validation of water saturation profile is one of the most important parts of such validation process. \nIn this session\, applied methodologies are introduced for validation and quality control of water saturation profile given by geological static model. This methodology covers quality control of water saturation for both irreducible and transition zones and the discussion will be enriched with practical examples from Case Studies. \nSpeaker: Nabi Mirzaee\, Freelance Consultant and Technical Adviser \nNabi Mirzaee has 35+ years of experience in reservoir and petroleum engineering\, reservoir evaluation\, simulation of hydrocarbon reservoirs\, field development planning\, training\, and project management of full-field studies. He is experienced in various types of hydrocarbon accumulations: conventional oil\, gas\, gas-condensate\, heavy oil\, carbonate\, and clastic reservoirs through direct involvement in the conduction of over 20 full-field studies (+40 reservoirs) of Iranian and international hydrocarbon resources. Nabi is a proficient user of reservoir simulation packages; Petrel Reservoir Engineering\, Eclipse\, CMG\, familiar with tNavigator\, and reservoir engineering software packages. Nabi is a Freelance Consultant and Technical Adviser to Oil and gas upstream studies and field development planning.

SUMMARY:Joint AINDT & SPE Facilities Group Technical Evening - Modular Robotic Technologies for Adaptive Inspection Solutions by Jeff Christopherson
DESCRIPTION:Oil and Gas assets managers are under continuous pressure to maintain a safe and profitable infrastructure in the face of ageing assets\, reduced budgets and increased safety demands. NDT technologies provide data to inform decision makers on how best to achieve their goals and further\, these technologies hold the potential to provide intelligence from areas that were never before assessable – if you could just GET them there…. but getting a new technology to the target area can present a challenge for robotics integrators. \n  \nInuktun’s Multi Mission Modular (IM3™) technology lends itself well to the challenge of deploying NDT systems into previously inaccessible\, confined or hazardous spaces. This presentation will review several case studies where robotic solutions were developed to deploy NDT technologies into these forbidding areas\, and touch upon future developments to take data collection even further. \nBy: Jeff Christopherson is Technical Sales Manager at Inuktun Services Ltd\, Nanaimo B.C. Canada. Jeff’s experience as an engineer in the film and television industry has given him an extensive knowledge of electronic\, mechanical and optical systems. This knowledge allows Jeff to fulfil his role as technical liaison between Inuktun and its clients. During his 5+years in this role\, he has been involved in the analysis of many unique customer requirements\, and in the determination of an Inuktun solution to satisfy those requirements.

SUMMARY:Facilities Group - Technical Event! - Blockchain\, Worth the Hype.
DESCRIPTION:Blockchain\, Worth the Hype. Presented by Rowan Fenn\, from Rise-X.IO \nAbout the Presentation: A blockchain provides an immutable record of transactions performed across a network without the need to rely on an intermediary. While this seems a fairly benign function\, blockchain technologies have the potential to fundamentally change the structure of the industry\, impacting traditional value chains and the complex supply chains that serve them. \nThe transactional capabilities of this group of technologies enables the coordination of loosely coupled assets\, companies and individuals in order to achieve collective goals. Effective industrial blockchains enable industry and cross industry collaboration\, resource sharing and optimization and ultimately\, industrial and supply chain automation. Productivity is the ultimate beneficiary. \nIn this session\, Rowan will provide an overview of this group of technologies\, share why he believes the hype is worth the hype\, and discuss how blockchain technology may feasibly be applied to oil and gas industry. \nAbout Rowan: Rowan Fenn is a scientist by vocation and by nature. He found curiosity to be a cure for his boredom\, but alas found no cure for his curiosity. Rowan has a keen interest in knowing and the possible both of which feed his curiosity. He is the co-founder of rise-x.io\, an industrial blockchain company developing a digital marketplace for industrial products and services. \nPrior to founding rise-x.io\, Rowan spent 10 years working with Accenture in their Energy Strategy practice. He focused on the upstream oil and gas industry where he had the privilege of working with some of the world’s largest and most admired energy companies across the hydrocarbon value chain and the asset lifecycle\, and with many different people and cultures in locations across the globe. \nOriginally from South Africa\, Rowan lives in Perth with his Wife and two (Australian) sons. He holds a B.Sc in Biochemistry and Microbiology\, a Postgraduate degree in Biotechnology\, and is a CIMA certified business accountant (Cert BA).

SUMMARY:SPE November Lecture: The Role of Modern Real-Time Operation Centres (RTOC) in Increasing Drilling and Completion Operations Efficiency
DESCRIPTION:The oil and gas industry has traditionally been the most dynamic industry in the world. Increasing demand on natural resources was driven by the natural increase of the world’s population\, and emerging economies leading to big investments in developing new highly advanced technologies in the fields of exploration\, drilling and production. With increasing complexity\, there is an increasing criticality\, risk and cost. Real-Time Operations Centres can help improve the process of making well-informed decisions\, risk analysis\, safeguard the operations\, and increase operations efficiency through better operational planning and execution \nThe three critical attributes for an RTOC to be effective are; receiving data from offshore sites in real-time mode\, the constant communication between offshore sites and the onshore RTOC\, and RTOC crew competence as the RTOC must have experienced and highly trained personnel. This presentation discusses the effective RTOC’s objectives\, functions\, added value\, processes\, communications\, and RTOC Human factors. Cost – benefit and examples of performance improvement examples are briefly discussed too. The presentation is based on a qualitative case study that examined 7 Real-Time Operations Centres for 7 different operators\, and literature review. \n  \nSpeaker: Taisir Shanableh\, Independent Consultant \nTaisir has more than 30 years of international technical and managerial experiences in Australasian\, European\, Middle Eastern\, Indian\, and Asian offshore and onshore operations. Worked with Sperry Drilling from 1991. Besides his regular position he has been a software/hardware instructor for SDL until the merger with Halliburton in 1998. From 2005 to 2015 he worked as a Halliburton Real-Time Operations Centre senior drilling optimisation engineer and RTOC advisor/instructor/coordinator in Asia Pacific\, USA\, Middle East and Europe for Shell\, Petronas\, Petrofac\, Lukoil\, Gas De France (ENGIE)\, and Reliance Industries. He has started and managed 4 RTOC globally from inception to implementation. In the last 2 years Tarsier has been an independent consultant while completing his second MSc degrees . Taisir holds an MSc in Engineering Management from Curtin University\, MSc in Petroleum Exploration from Aberdeen University\, and a BSC in Applied Geology from Damascus University.

SUMMARY:SPE WA Technical Luncheon - Drill or not to drill?
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nA learning system\, supported by binomial probability theory\, has the characteristic that newly acquired information is incorporated into the geological model thereby revising the GPOS of subsequent discovery.  The informed Explorationist is therefore presented with a decision-gated or staged approach to divest/relinquish or continue exploration.  The application of a learning system offers improved discovery frequency for the least cost to explore.  This result is compared to a repetitive-system baseline where GPOS remains static throughout the exploration campaign.  The disadvantage of a learning system is the time or duration required to absorb new information following each stage of data acquisition.  This disadvantage drives the need for Explorationists to select efficient processes and technology resulting in quicker divest/relinquish or continue decisions. \nPresenter: Graeme Morrison \nGraeme  is a Principal Reservoir Engineer with Woodside based in Perth Western Australia.  Graeme has been a member of the SPE for 35 years\, has a background in Physics and Mathematics\, and Graduated with a Masters in Petroleum Engineering from the UNSW in 1990.  His work experience has taken him to many locations\, with in-depth experiences in the North Sea and Offshore Western Australia. Graeme developed an interest in Exploration Statistics whilst working in Woodside’s Exploration department.  His manuscript SPE 186972 published for the SPE-APOGCE conference (Bali\, October 2017) is titled: Binomial Probability Theory Supporting a Learning System Applied to Exploration Decision Making. \nSPE in conjunction with our sponsors Rock Flow Dynamics and Expro\, are kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical luncheons. SUMMARY:SPE WA October Lecture- Geomechanics Assessment for Mature Fields
DESCRIPTION:The redevelopment of mature oil fields has been\, and will increasingly be\, an important subject. Oil recovery from mature fields can be boosted by drilling infill horizontal wells and through the use of enhanced recovery and production optimization techniques. Years of production and significant reservoir pressure declines in mature fields could cause considerable changes in the in situ horizontal stresses in the reservoir sections and surrounding rocks. Reduction of in situ stresses could result in narrow drilling margins\, increased risk of sand production and fault reactivation which in turn could make the drilling and completion of infill wells in depleted reservoirs operationally challenging. Therefore\, a robust knowledge of rock mechanical properties\, formation pressures\, the magnitude of in situ stresses and their evolution with production and injection are essential for successful drilling and completion of new infill wells in particular and the redevelopment of mature fields as a whole. In this presentation\, case histories from two mature oil and gas fields in the region will be presented to highlight how a systematic geomechanical evaluation can be used to address drilling and completion challenges in mature fields. The benefits of developing field scale 3D and 4D geomechanical models for mature fields will be discussed also. \n  \nSpeaker: Sadegh Asadi\,  Baker Hughes\, a GE company \n  \nSadegh Asadi holds a PhD in Petroleum Engineering from Curtin University. He has more than 10 years of experience in Mining and Petroleum sectors\, having worked for research institutes as well as the service sector in Asia Pacific. Prior to joining Baker Hughes in 2011\, he worked as a researcher at Curtin University and conducted rock mechanics laboratory experiments. In the last 7 years with Baker Hughes\, Sadegh has experienced in mature field redevelopment\, extended reach drilling\, real-time data monitoring and drilling optimisation as well as sand production\, control and management. He is presently based in Perth\, Australia and holds the position of Senior Geomechanics Engineer for Baker Hughes a GE company. Sadegh is a member of SPE and ISRM societies.
