SUMMARY:Pre-competitive geoscience supporting development of the hydrogen industry
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia are proud to present the details of our July 2025 SPE-WA Technical Meeting. \n  \n                *************************  New Venue : Four Points by Sheraton  ********************************** \n  \nAbout the Presentation:\nLarge scale storage of hydrogen will be required to balance future hydrogen supply and demand. This is particularly the case for hydrogen generated using intermittent renewable energy and production of ammonia\, green steel or for grid firming. Underground hydrogen storage can be much cheaper than equivalent above ground storage and potentially offers a low cost option for large-scale hydrogen storage in Australia. Salt caverns are used today for large-scale commercial hydrogen storage in the US and UK with more planned or under construction in Europe and North America. This tried and tested approach is the preferred large scale storage option\, and over the coming decade\, over 20 new large scale underground hydrogen storage facilities are planned for construction worldwide. The vast majority of these are salt caverns and the reminder a mix of rock cavern and storage in porous rock (depleted gas field/aquifer). Recognising the long lead times to establish underground hydrogen storage in Australia\, the Australian Government\, through its Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative\, is investing in a pre-competitive data acquisition program to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen storage in Australia. This includes geophysical mapping of Australia’s potentially suitable salt resources and undertaking a National Hydrogen Hub Storage Assessment to assess the viability of alternative storage options. In addition to underground hydrogen storage\, Geoscience Australia is assessing the potential of using natural hydrogen to diversify hydrogen production pathways. \n  \nAbout the Speaker:\nDr Andrew Feitz is Director of Energy Initiatives and Advice at the Australian Government’s national geoscience organisation\, Geoscience Australia. He is an environmental engineer and has over 15 years of research experience in geological storage of CO2. Prior to joining Geoscience Australia in 2008\, Andrew was a senior researcher in environmental treatment technologies at UNSW and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany.  Andrew leads Geoscience Australia’s technical advice on hydrogen and geological storage of CO2 and has served on a number of advisory committees to the Australian Government.  He leads Hydrogen Assessments under the Australian Government’s new Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative\, obtaining new geoscience data on natural hydrogen and underground hydrogen storage. \n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 23 July 2025>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 23 July 2025>\n                       SPE Member                         $50\n                       Non-Member                         $70 \nDate:              Wednesday\, 30 July 2025 \nLocation:       Four Points by Sheraton Hotel\nAddress:        707 Wellington Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             4:45pm – 5:00pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             5:00pm – 6:00pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             6:00pm – 6:15pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:15pm – 7:30 pm  Networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Maximizing Production and Minimizing Operational Risks using Virtuoso's Real Time & Forecasting Capabilities
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis\n\nThe SPE Young Professionals Tech101 series is an event primarily targeted at entry to mid-level engineers within the oil and gas community\, to provide “101” level education on topics across the industry. Professionals of all experience levels are open to come\, but keep in mind materials presented are catered to young professionals. \nThis event is free to sign up for Students who wish to attend. \nAbstract\n\nReal-time process twins are essential for efficiently operating systems to maintain integrity and profitability. This presentation explores the features and importance of process digital twins\, using Wood’s in-house product\, Virtuoso\, as an example. Virtuoso provides real-time monitoring and forecasting of key flow assurance parameters\, including pressures\, temperatures\, flow rates\, holdups\, densities\, impurities\, and inhibitor concentrations. This process twin serves as a vital operational tool\, guiding operators to mitigate integrity and operational risks\, minimize emissions\, and maximize production. Additionally\, it extends operators’ reaction time to unplanned shutdowns or trips\, significantly reducing daily operational costs. \nVirtuoso combines physics-based and digital capabilities\, employing hydraulic\, thermodynamic\, and unit operations modeling during the design phase to inform integrated system responses. In the operational phase\, it uses real-time field sensor data to monitor the field\, trigger alarms for specific events\, identify process anomalies\, and provide predictive functionalities based on operator actions. By utilizing historical field data\, the process twin learns and understands field-specific nuances\, enhancing operator readiness. The process twin facilitates complete process digitalization\, field operation verification\, process and production optimization\, decarbonization\, and improved system integrity. \nThis presentation will also discuss Virtuoso’s monitoring\, forecasting\, and advisory functionalities through the lens of a couple of case studies\, highlighting the value some of these capabilities add to operations. \nSpeaker – Ramnath Easwar\n\nRamnath Easwar currently serves as the APAC Lead for the Intelligent Asset Solutions Team at Wood PLC. SUMMARY:APAC SPE GAIA Webinar: Grey to Green: The Tata Climate Change Initiative
DESCRIPTION:This is the 2nd SPE Gaia Talk in the Online APAC SPE GAIA Webinar Series.  Registration is free.   \nGo to   https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_QaKx3wbNQwGgGp1feoMASg \nor press the Website link below \n  \nGrey to Green: The Tata Climate Change Initiative\nThe 2009 COP meeting in Copenhagen was seen as a pivotal moment for a global agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With 115 world leaders present\, including President Obama and Premier Wen\, expectations were high. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called it a defining moment in the fight against climate change. The agreement recognized the need to limit global warming to below 2°C\, with a review by 2015 to consider a stricter 1.5°C threshold. However\, Copenhagen fell short of a breakthrough\, with major progress delayed until the 2015 Paris COP. \nAnticipating the summit’s importance\, forward-looking organizations like the Tata Group began early action. With interests in high-emission sectors such as steel\, aviation\, and power\, Tata established a Climate Change Centre of Excellence in 2008. Backed by a steering committee of senior leaders\, the COE focused on three levers: building a climate strategy\, measuring emissions\, and developing internal climate champions. This presentation shares Tata’s journey. \nPresenter\nArunavo Mukerjee is Professor of Practice in the Department of Sustainable Energy Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology\, Kanpur. Before transitioning to academia\, he spent over 30-years with India’s largest industrial conglomerate – the Tata Group – holding key leadership positions across five Tata companies in the energy sector in India\, Europe\, Africa\, and North America.\nHis expertise spans ESG\, sustainability\, climate change\, energy transition\, industrial decarbonization\, renewable energy technologies\, water/wastewater management\, and energy efficiency. Throughout his career\, he has worked at the crossroads of corporate leadership\, policy advocacy\, and technological innovation\, striving to accelerate the global shift toward sustainable energy solutions.

SUMMARY:Corrosion in CCS: Lessons Learned and the Road Ahead
DESCRIPTION:  \nPresentation: Corrosion in CCS: Lessons Learned and the Road Ahead\nCarbon Capture and Storage (CCS) plays a vital role in the global effort to reduce CO₂ emissions. While pure\, dry CO₂ is generally non-corrosive\, real-world CO₂ streams often contain impurities that can significantly accelerate corrosion and jeopardize the integrity of transport and storage infrastructure. This seminar will explore current knowledge surrounding corrosion and material degradation in CCS systems. Despite growing research in this area\, several critical gaps remain—particularly inconsistencies in reported findings\, limitations in experimental setups\, and uncertainties about long-term performance—which undermine the reliability of predictions and system design. To address these challenges\, this seminar will present a research initiative focused on investigating the in-situ chemical interactions of impurities in CO₂ streams and their impact across the CCS value chain. \nPresenter: Professor Thunyaluk (Kod) Pojtanabuntoeng\nProfessor Thunyaluk (Kod) Pojtanabuntoeng is the Woodside and Chevron Chair in Materials and Corrosion Engineering at Curtin University. She holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Ohio University and an MSc in Petroleum Technology from Chulalongkorn University. Her research focuses on corrosion in oil and gas systems\, including CO2 corrosion\, Top-of-the-Line corrosion (TLC)\, and corrosion under insulation (CUI). Since joining Curtin in 2012\, she has led industry-funded projects addressing practical corrosion challenges and is an active member of the Australasian Corrosion Association. She advocates for collaboration between academia and industry in corrosion science and engineering. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Energy Literacy as a Crucial Tool for Building a Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:This is an Online Webinar by SPE Gaia hosted by SPE WA Gaia for the APAC Region\n  \nSpeaker Nick Last\, Director Well Testing Knowledge International\n  \nEnergy is a hot button topic of the day. News feeds are filled with energy-related stories\, often liberally sprinkled with terms like firming\, storage\, intermittency and capacity factor\, as well as the basic terms “power” and “energy” – which sadly are often confused. Intermingled with the jargon is a plethora of units and acronyms: kW\, kWh\, PJ\, eV\, EV\, LNG\, LCOE\, BESS and FESS and hundreds more. Without delving too far into the physics\, Nick’s talk will provide some clarity around the basic concepts of energy and power\, and show several examples to help sense check some of claims and counter claims that are made in this politically contentious field. \nAbout the Speaker \nNick Last is a consultant petroleum engineer specializing in the analysis of dynamic well & reservoir data. He began his career with Schlumberger in the North Sea and SE Asia\, and has subsequently delivered consulting projects for numerous operators worldwide. His interest in broader energy matters was sparked during an Australian road trip\, which by chance passed numerous wind and solar farms. Despite working for decades in the energy industry\, he realized that he didn’t really understand the nature of the power they produced\, nor how they fitted into our energy system. Since then he’s devoted considerable time to rectifying that knowledge deficit\, and has written and lectured extensively on energy related matters. Nick is a founder of Well Test Knowledge International and holds a BSc (Hons) in Physics from Imperial College\, London. \nTo register for free go to this page:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_tgL208PFSVOrhDgpEE0WOQ\n  \nFor any issues contact SPE WA Gaia  claus.otto@curtin.edu.au.  thank you for joining the webinar \n

SUMMARY:CCS projects and insights from across Australia : SPE WA - PESA joint event
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our May 2025 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting which will be held jointly with PESA. \nGuest Speakers: Robert Root\, Anne Forbes\, Julie Cass\nRobert Root has over 22 years of experience with Chevron in a variety of leadership and technical roles spanning exploration\, appraisal\, development\, operations\, CCS and business planning in Australia and the USA.  Currently Robert is the Gorgon Asset Development Manager for Chevron Australia with a remit that includes producing Gorgon and Jansz gas/condensate fields in offshore NWS Australia\, Gorgon CCS operations and remediation activities on Barrow Island\, and future backfill and development optimisation projects. \nPrior to joining Chevron Robert completed a PhD from the Australia School of Petroleum focusing on CCS in the Gippsland Basin of SE Australia. \nJulie Cass is a petrophysicist with over 20 years international experience in the oil and gas industry in leadership and technical positions with a record of accomplishment in delivering technically challenging projects that spans: exploration\, appraisal and development subsurface projects\, LNG production management and carbon sequestration. She currently works for the Geological Survey and Resource Strategy Division of the Department of Energy\, Mines\, Industry\, Regulation and Safety as the Manager of Geological Storage and Geothermal Systems. Before joining the survey Julie worked for Chevron Australia in Perth\, Marathon Oil and Helix RDS in the UK\, and Santos in Brisbane. Julie has worked on a diverse range of assets\, in many countries\, across many depositional settings and fluid types. Julie has a Bachelor of Science (Applied Geology) and a Master’s degree in Engineering Science (Petroleum Engineering) from Curtin University. \nAnne Forbes is a senior research analyst in Wood Mackenzie’s Australasia upstream research team. Since joining in early 2022\, she has worked on oil and gas assets and the domestic market balance across Australia. Prior to Wood Mackenzie Anne spent eight years at Chemostrat in a technical geological role in the upstream industry. She specialised in stratigraphic analysis and has worked across Australia’s principal producing basins. She has a Bachelors and Masters in Geology from the University of Cambridge\, and a PhD in Volcanology from the Open University. \n  \nAbout the Presentations: \nGorgon Carbon Capture and Storage – Insights and Lessons Learned\nRobert Root (Chevron Australia) will provide an overview of Gorgon CCS including performance to date\, system optimization\, and key lessons for other CCS projects. The Gorgon Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) plant is supplied by gas from two foundation fields: Jansz which has low reservoir CO2\, and Gorgon which is relatively high in reservoir CO2 (~14%). The design of Gorgon Project included systems to extract CO2 from the reservoir gas stream feeding the LNG plant and inject it into the Dupuy Formation below Barrow Island (BWI) for permanent storage. Since 2019 CO2 has been injected into the Dupuy at globally significant rates with over 10 million tonnes injected\, however the system has been limited by the capacity to manage reservoir pressure through producing water from the Dupuy Formation and injection into the overlying Barrow Group. Activities are currently underway to increase pressure management capacity including side-tracking and re-completing existing wells\, drilling additional wells\, and installation of surface filtration facilities. \nCO₂mpartmentalising Climate Change: Perth Basin’s Role\nJulie Cass (DEMIRS) will discuss reservoir quality controls in the Perth Basin that have been evaluated to rank carbon storage targets for a CO₂ Storage Atlas being prepared by the Geological Survey of Western Australia. The key attributes for the most prospective targets include thick intervals with high net-to-gross passing cut-off criteria of shale volume below 30% and porosity greater than 10% at depths suitable for supercritical CO₂ storage. Reservoir heterogeneity is preferred as it permits greater lateral plume migration by enhancing residual gas trapping thereby boosting storage efficiency. These attributes alongside seal effectiveness determine the most suitable storage intervals. \nThe Cattamarra Coal Measures emerged as the highest-ranked storage interval of the evaluated targets. It is characterised by thick\, high net-to-gross sections with coarse-grained channel sands providing excellent injection potential. Burial and temperature control diagenesis which naturally degrades porosity and permeability with depth ultimately defining the lower limit of intervals prospective for storage. A combination of temperature modelling\, petrophysical analysis and depth mapping has been utilized to delineate the Cattamarra Coal Measures reservoir target and assess the overlying regional seal of the Cadda Formation. \n\nGlobal CCUS overview: Pivotal progress and persistent challenges\nAnne Forbes (Wood Mackenzie) (abstract to come) \n\n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 8 May 2025>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 8 May 2025>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Thursday\, 15 May 2025 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             4:45pm – 5:15pm Registration\, welcome drinks and networking.\nTime:             5:15pm – 6:30pm Opening remarks and first session presentation. \nTime:             6:30pm – 7:15pm Food and drinks \nTime:             7:15pm – 7:45pm Second session presentations.\nTime:             7:45pm – 8:00 pm  Post talk networking. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Liability is for Ever: Risk Elements in the Implementation of Decommissioning and Well P&A
DESCRIPTION:  \n                                                       **** Distinguished Lecturer  –  Lunch Time Event **** \n  \nSociety of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our April 2025 SPE WA Technical Lunch Time Meeting. \n  \nAbout the Presentation:\nFacility decommissioning together with well plugging and abandonment (P&A)\, collectively known as D&A\, is a critical element of any oil and gas project life cycle. Often\, it is an afterthought\, barely considered at the outset\, particularly when production sharing contracts are negotiated and signed. Despite this vital activity costing as much (or occasionally more) than the initial project development\, it seldom receives similar critical\, scoping and planning attention that construction and drilling activities need to attain final investment decisions (FID). \nFrequently shunned due to costs and zero associated revenue\, D&A remains largely misunderstood\, neglected\, or ignored during asset life. Experience illustrates that effective decommissioning must be planned years in advance of execution\, ideally in parallel from the construction stage. Moreover\, decommissioning should be managed as carefully as project development to mitigate looming liabilities for existing operators and future generations. \nThis lecture shares optimal learnings and critical project reflections from projects globally. \n  \nAbout the Distinguished Lecturer:\nDr. Brian Twomey established Reverse Engineering Services Ltd (RESL) over 30 years ago; a specialist consultancy solely focused on the decommissioning\, abandonment\, and recycling of onshore and offshore facilities\, pipelines\, wells\, subsea systems and ships. He has more recently leveraged that experience to incorporate lessons learned during decommissioning in the petroleum industry to new and emerging arenas\, including the offshore wind and nuclear industries. \nBrian has unique global expertise. He has decommissioned projects in every major petroleum province of the world\, in many cases identifying unique innovative solutions. Additionally\, Brian has helped formulate and shape national decommissioning policies and guidelines; he has assisted both regulators and operators in the optimal design and interpretation of national regulatory frameworks. \nBrian is a leading authority in developing the next generation of competence to address the tsunami of complex decommissioning projects which are rapidly being imposed on an unsuspecting worldwide industry. Over the past 12 years\, Brian has served as a global trainer on decommissioning with SPE International on several continents. He holds BSc\, MSc and PhD\, MSc in Mechanical Engineering\, Composite Materials\, Plant Design & Applied Mechanics respectively from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST)\, UK. \n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 27 March 2025>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 27 March 2025>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Lunch Time on Thursday 3 April 2025 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nA buffet lunch will be served from 12:00pm  \nTime:             12:00pm – 12:20pm  Registration\, networking and lunch.\nTime:             12:20pm – 1:00pm  Opening remarks and presentation. SUMMARY:What Does The Energy Transition Actually Mean for the Oil & Gas Industry?
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our February 2025 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting. \n  \nAbout the Presentation:\nWhat does energy transition mean? What are we transitioning to? How and when will we get there? In hindsight\, the energy transition movement means different things to different entities. To operators\, the primary focus is to transform their business (influenced by regulations and legislative policies) by reducing their carbon emissions while also investing in cleaner low-carbon energy sources\, such as geothermal and hydrogen. For service companies\, it is another potential revenue stream by offering products and services to oil and gas operators\, as well as to renewable power generation companies. For governments\, it is defined as an essential need for energy diversification in order to achieve sustainable\, self-sufficient solutions that are less impacted by socio-economic or geo-political factors\, i.e.\, energy security. It is important to note that the ‘public’ understand that what is driving this paradigm shift: technology\, policy\, and cultural change. The energy transition concept will be broken down as a current ‘buzzword’ and popular concept that is fettered by technology hype\, political agendas\, and/or financial influences that are attached to the term. Finally\, light will be shined on how the industry’s previous institutional mindset has changed to a broad\, open-minded desire to create a net-positive outcome using Environmental\, Social\, and Governance techniques. \n  \nAbout the Distinguished Lecturer:\nBez is an associate consultant at Darcy Partners\, focused on market intelligence and management consulting for oil and gas operators. Bez has over 40 publications\, 4 patents\, 1 book\, and 14 years of experience in the energy sector – hydrocarbons to renewables. Previously\, Bez worked as an Energy Technologist at Baker Hughes\, engaged on techno-commercial applications in energy transition projects. Additionally\, he also has experience as Sr. Research Scientist in academia. Bez is active in SPE as a committee member for ATCE and ADIPEC. Bez has a master’s degree in petroleum engineering and a PhD in Management in Energy Transition. \n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 5 February 2025>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 5 February 2025>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Wednesday\, 12 February 2025 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             4:45pm – 5:00pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             5:00pm – 5:50pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             5:50pm – 6:00pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:00pm – 7:30 pm  Networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Geomechanics for Field Development and Production Management - experience from two decades of reservoir geomechanics studies
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our December 2024 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting. \n  \nAbout the Presentation:\nModern numerical 3D Geomechanical models can provide detailed subsurface geological understanding to predict failure events impacting reservoir engineering and production management. \nGeomechanical models have become a standard input for drilling engineering and well planning and in many companies geomechanical teams today work closely with drilling teams. The same integrated modeling and engineering approach has not taken hold yet when considering reservoir engineering and production management\, where the use of geomechanics models and close cooperation between geomechanics and engineering teams can still be improved. \nThis  presentation will show how modern models provide the geomechanical tools to analyse potential wellbore and reservoir failures that can impact production. It will show the useful characteristics a geomechanics model should have to solve production challenges and influence reservoir management decisions. \n  \nAbout the Distinguished Lecturer:\nDr. Juliane Heiland is a Geomechanics Advisor at SLB focusing on rock and soil mechanics applied to a wide range of engineering domains. Her first degree in Engineering Geology from the Technical University Munich gave her a solid geological sciences foundation applied to civil engineering and tunneling. A PhD (from 1994 to 1998) focused on landslide research in Italy\, Germany and the Czech Republic. Academic post-doc research at the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam focused on laboratory solutions through high-pressure rock mechanics experiments applied to problems in tunneling and geothermal well productivity. She joined SLB (formerly Schlumberger) as a research scientist in 2001 and worked six years in geomechanical research towards sanding and perforating. In 2007\, Juliane moved into field consulting services providing geomechanics engineering solutions to SLB clients in Africa and Europe. After a brief move to the operator side of the industry with Maersk Oil\, providing wellbore stability analysis for drilling planning\, she returned to SLB in 2015. As Geomechanics Advisor since 2018 Juliane concentrates on training the next generation of geomechanics engineers at SLB and with operators in the wider industry as well as providing input to consulting studies worldwide. \n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 28 November 2024>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 28 November 2024>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Thursday\, 5 December 2024 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             4:45pm – 5:00pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             5:00pm – 5:50pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             5:50pm – 6:00pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:00pm – 7:30 pm  Networking drinks & food. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Methane Emission Reductions Management
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA will host the November GAIA Sustainability\nLuncheon Seminar\n  \n\nPresented by Craig Duarte\n  \nMethane is responsible for around 30% of the rise in global temperatures since the Industrial Revolution\, and rapid and sustained reductions in methane emissions are key to limiting near-term global warming and improving air quality. The energy sector – including oil\, natural gas\, coal and bioenergy – accounts for over a third of methane emissions from human activity. Methane emissions from oil and natural gas systems result from both normal operations and system disruptions. These emissions can be cost-effectively reduced by upgrading technologies or equipment\, and by improving operations. \n  \nAbout the Speaker\nCurrently a Climate Policy Advisor at Woodside Energy\, Craig leads initiatives that support methane reduction outcomes\, as well as advocates for pragmatic regulatory reforms in the energy sector. \nWith over twenty years’ experience as a chartered Chemical Engineer\, Craig Duarte is recognised for his expertise in engineering and operations.  Throughout his career\, Craig has held key roles in project management and engineering\, focusing on areas such as development framing\, technical engineering\, technology development\, process safety\, operations\, and stakeholder engagement. He has successfully led teams and projects from conception to operational success\, demonstrating his ability to deliver practical solutions in a complex industry. \nCraig is committed to sharing his knowledge and expertise\, actively mentoring engineers and students to support the development of future industry leaders – he is an active IChemE Professional Development Assessor.  Community and philanthropy is also important to him\, with his efforts generating over $2 million for local cancer research over the last eleven years. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:           SPE Member                          $35\n                       Non-Member                         $45 \nDate:              Wednesday\, 27 November 2024 \nLocation:       Wood Offices\nLocation:       240 St. Georges Terrace\, Level 1 \nTime:             11.30am Registration & Lunch\nTime:             12.15pm – 1pm Presentation and Q&A. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:No Longer A Sunk Cost: Innovation & Collaboration For Decommissioning
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our November 2024 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting. \n  \nAbout the Presentation:\nDecommissioning involves the timely\, safe\, and environmentally responsible removal\, or satisfactorily dealing with\, infrastructure from offshore oil and gas operations. With a significant number of aging subsea assets\, it’s estimated the cost of decommissioning in Australia alone will exceed US$45 billion over the next 50 years. \nNot unlike a Rubik’s cube\, decommissioning can seem like an unsolvable puzzle. Many sides must work together to solve a complex problem with a multitude of variables including environmental impact\, safety\, timing\, and cost. Many decommissioned materials cannot be re-used and are not easily recycled. Collaboration and innovation are vital to help us find the right combination of solutions to achieve the best outcomes. \nUniversities play a crucial role in this process by providing access to cutting-edge research\, knowledge\, and resources. These collaborations can create an environment that fosters innovation\, where academia and industry professionals can work together to share knowledge and expertise and explore new technologies and methodologies. \nThis lecture highlights the subsea oil and gas infrastructure decommissioning challenges we face as an industry\, showcases some innovative solutions\, and explains how in today’s rapidly changing world\, innovation and collaboration are essential for achieving success. \nThe key takeaway is that we must solve this puzzle together. By working collaboratively\, we can create a more sustainable future\, reduce costs\, and achieve more efficient decommissioning. \nLike solving a Rubik’s cube\, cooperation\, collaboration\, and innovation require patience and persistence\, but the rewards can be great\, and our subsea infrastructure will no longer be a sunk cost. \n  \nAbout the Distinguished Lecturer:\nAndy Watt is an energy industry professional with over 26 years of experience in various technical roles across Australasia\, North Africa\, the Middle East\, and Indonesia. He has expertise in land seismic operations\, geophysics\, reservoir engineering\, forecasting\, production optimization\, technology\, and innovation. \nCurrently\, Andy serves as the Innovation Advisor at Woodside Energy\, Australia’s largest oil and gas company. SUMMARY:(1) The Forgotten Member in Early Field Development Planning\, (2)Digital Asset & Physical Twin: A Dialog on Digitally Born Future Fit Asset
DESCRIPTION:Important Notice: Due to a scheduling conflict\, the event date has been rescheduled from October 2nd to October 28th. If you are unable to attend on the new date\, please reach out to Dean Finlayson for a refund. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.\n  \nSpeaker (SLB):  Gaojing (Melody) Cao\nGaojing (Melody) Cao is the Head of Product Asset Performance Management and Digital Twin and was the surface facilities technical authority with SLB in London. She has 25 years of leadership experience in delivering large-scale\, onshore\, and offshore oil and gas projects and petrochemical projects. \nShe has managed projects through all phases from concept development to start-up. She has also managed assets in the operations & maintenance phase including major turnaround management. \nShe holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Xi’an Jiao Tong University\, an MBA degree from Manchester Business School\, and a PMP credential from Project Management Institute. \nPresentation -The Forgotten Member in Early Field Development Planning\nThe field development and asset management life cycle comprises 7 stages: explore\, appraise\, select\, define\, execute\, operate\, and abandon. Frequently companies prioritize reserve or resource-related subsurface activities such as seismic\, volumetrics\, and reservoir engineering\, but put little thought into surface facilities at the early stage of the field development life cycle. Subsequently\, the surface facilities become the bottleneck or even a showstopper to unlocking the full potential of the reservoir and realization of the optimal value of the asset. \nThis presentation focuses on the critical role surface facilities play in field development and asset management. It covers the major surface facility activities involved in field development\, the complexity of these activities\, and how surface facilities impact the whole asset value realization. Examples demonstrate the consequences when facilities are overlooked. Finally\, it discusses developments in building sustainable facilities in the oil and gas industry. \n \nSpeaker (Kongsberg Digital):  Siddharth SETIA  \nAs General Manager  APAC – Digital Energy\, Sid leads Business Growth and Strategy in APAC prioritizing on Australia\, New-Zealand\, India & Japan. Sid joined Kongsberg Digital earlier this year after having spent 15+ years with fortune 500 Japanese Trading conglomerate Sumitomo\, where he led a variety of roles in Supply Chain\, Field  Operations\, Strategic Account Head  and Digital Transformation along with regional BD Advisor for new technology investments division. Sid is a Mechanical Engineer Graduate (India) with a Post-Grad in Petroleum Engineering from Curtin University\, Australia. \nPresentation -Digital Asset & Physical Twin: A Dialog on Digitally Born Future Fit Asset\nWhat if you’re tasked to build a Facility of Future?\, that is truly future proof. What does it really mean? \n\nInstalling any and every IT\, OT\, Tech tool available to Ops mankind?\n\nOr \n\nDesigning a facility on tech enabled framework that can adopt OT/IT infra dynamically? to meet?\n\nWhat path genuinely delivers operational excellence along with sustainable long-term value? \nIn the context of constructing assets in remote locations\, such as LNG facilities\, managing operations with limited personnel and high logistical costs presents substantial technical challenges. The geographical isolation and associated expenses necessitate rigorous efficiency in workflows and effective shift transitions. Employing a digital twin—a virtual replica of the physical asset—offers a sophisticated solution to these challenges\, particularly during the project phase. \nA digital twin integrates real-time data and advanced simulation capabilities to address common pain points experienced by operators and EPC (Engineering\, Procurement\, and Construction) contractors. These issues often include costly design modifications\, data integrity problems\, safety risks\, quality control inconsistencies\, budget overruns\, and suboptimal resource allocation. \nThe implementation of a digital twin provides several technical benefits: \n\nOptimized Facility Design: Facilitates a ‘digital by design’ paradigm\, incorporating analytics-driven design to minimize instrumentation\, model corrosion\, and embed performance architecture. This reduces CAPEX and OPEX\, ensuring operational efficiency and adaptability from the design phase.\nEnhanced Data Access: Delivers a centralized\, cloud-based data repository for real-time monitoring and management. This enables high-resolution data quality control\, accurate contextualization\, and seamless updates throughout the project lifecycle.\nAdvanced Safety Management: Utilizes simulation capabilities to model construction processes\, assess risk scenarios\, and optimize safety protocols. This includes virtual testing of start-up logic and equipment performance\, as well as emissions estimation and reporting.\nCost Efficiency: Enables remote operations and virtual site inspections\, reducing the need for physical site presence and thereby cutting associated costs. The digital environment supports remote training and site orientation\, expediting project timelines.\nImproved Resource Allocation: Provides a platform for enhanced coordination and tracking of construction activities and resource utilization\, ensuring optimal alignment between on-site and remote teams.\nRefined Quality Control: Leverages machine learning and artificial intelligence to transition from reactive to predictive maintenance\, facilitating automated quality control and reducing rework costs.\n\nAdopting a digital twin approach enhances decision-making\, risk mitigation\, and project execution\, thereby significantly improving asset performance and sustainability throughout its lifecycle. This technical approach fosters a culture of innovation and efficiency\, setting a new standard for asset management in remote and challenging environments. \n  \nImportant Notice: Due to a scheduling conflict\, the event date has been rescheduled from October 2nd to October 28th. If you are unable to attend on the new date\, please reach out to Dean Finlayson for a refund. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. \n  \nOnline Teams Meeting Link:\nJoin the meeting online here on 28th of October 2024 from 16:45 hours (AWST)

SUMMARY:AGM and Distinguished Lecturer: CO2 Storage Resource Management System – Application and Learnings from World’s First Booking
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our August 2024 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting. The technical meeting will be preceded by the SPE-WA 2024 Annual General Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nCarbon capture\, utilization and storage (CCUS) is experiencing rapid growth and the ability to classify and compare projects across the globe is of increasing importance. The CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS) has been designed to provide the common framework and is increasingly being applied across the industry. The SRMS has been seeded from the widely used Petroleum Resources Management System (PRMS)\, which makes it ideal for industry professionals familiar with the concepts of classification and categorization. \nThe SRMS was applied to an onshore project by an Australian oil and gas company in 2021 and led to the world’s first public reporting of CO2 storage quantities under the SRMS classification system. Standard reserves workflows and systems were modified for CO2 evaluation and reporting\, resulting in a streamlined processes throughout the organization. Multiple benefits were realized such as standardized evaluation and reporting\, a unified language across the company\, and enhanced formality in CCUS reporting. \nAs more CCUS projects are proposed\, a robust classification system has become vital to communicate consistent terminology\, valuation methodologies\, and reporting systems for identifying project status and differential between projects. The application of the SRMS is highly recommended for stakeholders\, financiers\, or regulatory bodies involved in the commercial development of a CCUS project. \n\nAbout the Speaker\nPaul Lyford is the General Manager Planning Portfolio & Resource Management at Santos Ltd\, an Australian oil and gas company and the first to add CO2 Storage resources to the annual reserves report. Paul has over 30 years experience and has been involved in many field developments across Australia. He has a background in reservoir engineering\, operations\, planning\, strategy and commercial. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia\, a member of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and member of Society of Petroleum Evaluation engineers (SPEE). Paul holds an honors degree and PhD in Engineering from University of Melbourne and post graduate qualifications in Finance. Paul is currently a member of the SPE CO2 Storage Resources Committee (CSRC) and part of the SPE SRMS subcommittee charged with updating the SRMS. \n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $40 <Until 21 Aug 2024>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $60 <Until 21 Aug 2024>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                           $70 \nDate:              Wednesday\,  28 August 2024 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration & Networking. \nTime:             5:00 pm – 5:10 pm Annual General Meeting. \nTime:             5:10 pm – 5:50 pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             5:50 pm – 6:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:00 pm – 7:30 pm Closing with networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors is kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical events. SUMMARY:A Modern-Day Gold Rush: Lithium in Brines
DESCRIPTION:Lithium in brines in southeast Saskatchewan: a modern-day gold rush \nThe Speaker \nDr. Ben Rostron\, is the 2024 Birdsall-Dreiss Distinguished Lecturer. He is a Professor Emeritus of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta and President of Isobrine Solutions Inc. He holds a BASc in Geological Engineering (1986) from the University of Waterloo\, and earned his MSc (1990) and PhD (1995) in Geology from the University of Alberta. \nHe started his academic career at the University of Saskatchewan in 1994\, Ben conducted pioneering hydrogeological mapping of the Williston Basin\, continuing extensive fieldwork since his first wellhead formation-water sample in 1996. Returning to the University of Alberta in 1997\, he taught Regional and Petroleum Hydrogeology until his retirement in 2021\, emphasizing applied research addressing real-world challenges. \nBen’s initiatives extended to practical applications\, notably founding Isobrine Solutions Inc. in 2004. His research led to an understanding of the unique distribution of lithium in the subsurface\, a rush for mineral brine permits in Saskatchewan\, and ultimately\, in part to the creation of several new lithium exploration/production companies attempting to exploit a new type of lithium-brine resource in the province and beyond. \nThe Talk \nThere is currently an enormous exploration interest in brine-hosted lithium from the Duperow/Leduc aquifer in Western Canada. Published concentrations of lithium up to 259 mg/L are found in southeast Saskatchewan\, significantly higher than those currently being exploited further west in west central Saskatchewan and Alberta. Yet\, the origin of this difference within a single formation has received little attention in the open literature. The question remains: what controls the distribution of lithium in subsurface brines? A second question is: why are there extreme variations in lithium concentrations mapped very close together? \nBen will address these questions and he will review this new type of brine-hosted lithium resource from southeast Saskatchewan and provide the latest public results from this active exploration play. \nAbout the Event \nPrice:            SPE/AusIMM Member          $45 \n                         Non-Member                         $65                       \nDate:              Tuesday\,  20 August 2024 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel \, 14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             5:00 pm – 5:50 pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             5:50 pm – 6:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Closing with networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors is kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical events. SUMMARY:Revamping Gas Facilities for a Greener Future: Transforming Brownfields into CCS Hubs – The Kent Way
DESCRIPTION:Brownfield modifications to convert existing gas production facilities for CCS operations \nSpeaker: \nChristopher Jones has 13 years of experience in process engineering and currently is a Principal Process Engineer at Kent PLC. He underwent an accelerated Honours (First Class) program at university in chemical engineering and completed an internship in Germany. Chris has been exposed to a wide breadth of industry projects allowing him to apply unique design approaches when tackling challenges in traditional oil and gas and emerging new energy industries. \n  \nAbstract: \nIn recent years\, traditional oil and gas operators have found novel means of extending the life of their assets and deferring onerous decommissioning costs by converting their facilities from gas production into carbon dioxide (CO2) injection. While the task of designing for CO2 may sound simple\, CO2 injection works in counter-intuitive ways\, with previously established heuristics derived from years of experience in gas condensate systems being quickly challenged as potentially dangerous. The world of designing CO2 systems is back-to-front compared with hydrocarbons; it isn’t simply a case of a change in flow direction. \nSome of the design challenges explored in this presentation include: large density variability in CO2 systems where a small change in the ambient temperature can significantly impact the pressure of a shut-in system; optimal pressure ratings of the vents and drains systems and how previous safety margins may be unsafe; pipeline hydraulic modelling focussed on new areas outside of the traditional suite of analysis\, such as assurance of the supercritical phase; understanding liquid water dropout; and what to modify in an existing gas-condensate production system. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tech 101 Series - Downhole Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing Overview: Permanent\, Temporary and Disposable Solutions
\nThis event is free to sign up for online attendance to the event. \nAbstract\n\nDistributed Fibre Optic Sensing (DFOS) is a powerful in well diagnostic tool with a decades long track record in downhole Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) applications. DFOS is well-matched to the data age\, providing full well datasets over full well lifecycles\, which are increasingly used to optimise asset performance and return on investment. An introduction to the principals of DFOS is followed by use case examples including seismic\, production enhancement\, well integrity\, P&A and CCUS. The presentation covers permanent fibre optic installations\, predominantly used in high value wells\, temporary fibre solutions via rigless intervention\, and the more recent developments in disposable fibre optic systems which make DFOS a diagnostic option for almost all wells. \nSpeaker – Rob Crawford\n\nRob started in the industry as a Rigless Intervention Tools Design and Test Engineer in Dorset\, England and Houston\, before moving into a global Completions Engineering role with Smith International and then SLB Operations Support Manager in Houston. Rob left SLB to co-found DTI\, designing and manufacturing innovative rigless intervention tools. After moving DTI into the FrontRow Group Rob moved to Perth and joined sister company Well-SENSE in March 2023. \nAgenda\n\nPrice:              Free \nDate:               Thursday\, 25th July 2024 \nLocation:       MicrosoftTeams – Hosted via Santos\, 100 St Georges Tce\, Perth \nSchedule: \n11:30 – 12:00    Registration \n12:00 – 12:45    Presentation \n12:45 – 13:00    Online Q&A \n13:00                  Session ends \nOnce registered\, an email will be sent to attendees for access to the venue.

SUMMARY:Geothermal Energy: A pragmatic consideration of how to commercialize Australia’s misunderstood resource Australian CCUS in 2024 – project status\, policy and the future
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our July 2024 SPE WA Technical Meeting which will be held jointly with PESA. \n\n  \nAbout the Presentations\nGeothermal Energy: A pragmatic consideration of how to commercialize Australia’s misunderstood resource \nGeothermal energy is a readily available\, reliable\, zero-emissions resource that provides numerous advantages in a balanced energy portfolio\, as well as societal and environmental benefits\, that can help Australia meet its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050. \nRenewable energy projects are central to achieving Australia’s decarbonization objectives: electricity is the largest source of emissions in Australia\, at ~33% of the national total. Recent trends have seen substantial decreases in power-related generation in the past decade; however\, existing and planned wind\, solar and battery storage projects are not capable of offsetting planned retirements of thermal power plants – especially when considering anticipated increases in electricity demand and baseload supply issues. Supply shortfalls and grid reliability issues represent serious risks to safe\, secure\, clean and affordable energy. \nGeothermal resources address these issues by providing flexible\, dispatchable\, baseload power that complements solar and wind projects by providing “always-on” power\, supplementing those significant\, but intermittent resources. Furthermore\, geothermal is highly scalable\, allowing fit-for-purpose power solutions\, including behind the meter provision\, “islanded” grids in remote areas\, and baseload or dispatchable supply to the grid in more populous areas. \nThis talk provides an overview of geothermal energy in an Australian context\, including next-generation technologies that have transformed the global industry over the past decade; the benefits and challenges that will shape the sector in the coming decades; and critical commercial\, regulatory\, ESG and other success factors that will drive geothermal energy as a significant component of Australia’s decarbonized future. \n  \nAustralian CCUS in 2024 – project status\, policy and the future \nCCS project maturation in Australia has seen highs and lows since it was first initiated 1999 with the GEODISC study. Changes in government support and market forces have seen periods of greater activity (notably 2008-2011 with state and Federal support for CCS to address coal emissions thorough the CCS Flagships program) through to the doldrums of the 2010’s with the removal of both CCS incentives (carbon tax and meaningful emission reduction schemes)  and wholesale government support through funding. \nThe 2020’s saw a change in public sentiment and the setting of corporate\, state and national Net Zero 2050 targets which supported a renewed interest in CCS in Australia\, this time linked to emission reduction from LNG gas processing\, hard to abate industries and the rise in third party CCS as a service hubs. \nIn this talk Rosie will give a look back on CCS in Australia\, give a view of the current status of projects and potential future trends. \n  \n  \nAbout the Speakers\nDr Trey Meckel has more than has more than 30 years of experience at the forefront of the global energy sector\, including decarbonised energy solutions\, petroleum E&P\, and energy R&D. \nPresently\, Dr Meckel is the Head of Subsurface for Earth’s Energy\, Australia’s only pure play ASX-listed geothermal company; and Chief Exploration Officer for Groundbreaking Energy\, a privately held Australian geothermal company. Through his consultancy\, Monteverde Energy\, Dr Meckel is involved in other geothermal projects in Australia and the USA. \nPreviously\, Dr Meckel was the Storage Program Manager at CO2CRC (Australia) and Vice President of Global Exploration\, New Ventures\, & Geosciences for Pluspetrol\, Latin America’s largest private\, diversified energy company. Earlier in his career\, Dr Meckel worked for Shell and Woodside Energy. \nDr Meckel is the Secretary of the Australian Geothermal Association\, a Global Ambassador for the Geothermal Energy Advancement Association\, and a tutor for the University of Cambridge (UK) Institute for Sustainability Leadership. \nHe holds a PhD in Earth Sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH-Zürich)\, an MA in Geology from the University of Texas at Austin (USA)\, and a BA with Honors from Williams College (USA). \n  \nRosie Johnstone is a sedimentologist and geoscientist with 25+ years’ experience in both oil and gas exploration and carbon capture and storage (CCS) across Australia\, the Asia-Pacific region and the UK. Rosie was Shell’s focal point for CCS sink identification in the Australia/Asia-Pacific region\, from high-level screening to injection site planning in the Petrel Sub-Basin. \nSince 2021 Rosie has been Head of CCS Solutions for GeoVault\, a wholly owned subsidiary of Buru Energy and a “CCS as a service” company specialising in onshore geological storage of CO2. GeoVault leverages Buru’s extensive onshore experience in the Canning and Carnarvon Basins (Kimberly and Pilbara) of WA\, drawing on geological\, operational and stakeholder experience. \nRosie is the current Interim Chair for the CCUS Network Australia and actively engages with federal and state government regulators\, research institutions\, local communities and emitters. \n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 11 July 2024>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 11 July 2024>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Thursday\, 18 July 2024 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             5:00pm – 6:00pm Registration & networking drinks.\nTime:             6:00pm – 6:45pm Food platters served.\nTime:             6:45pm – 7:45pm  Opening remarks\, presentations and Q&A.\nTime:             7:45pm – 8:30pm  Networking drinks. \nFree tickets are available for Students.
