SUMMARY:AGM and Distinguished Lecturer: CO2 Storage Resource Management System – Application and Learnings from World’s First Booking
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our August 2024 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting. The technical meeting will be preceded by the SPE-WA 2024 Annual General Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nCarbon capture\, utilization and storage (CCUS) is experiencing rapid growth and the ability to classify and compare projects across the globe is of increasing importance. The CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS) has been designed to provide the common framework and is increasingly being applied across the industry. The SRMS has been seeded from the widely used Petroleum Resources Management System (PRMS)\, which makes it ideal for industry professionals familiar with the concepts of classification and categorization. \nThe SRMS was applied to an onshore project by an Australian oil and gas company in 2021 and led to the world’s first public reporting of CO2 storage quantities under the SRMS classification system. Standard reserves workflows and systems were modified for CO2 evaluation and reporting\, resulting in a streamlined processes throughout the organization. Multiple benefits were realized such as standardized evaluation and reporting\, a unified language across the company\, and enhanced formality in CCUS reporting. \nAs more CCUS projects are proposed\, a robust classification system has become vital to communicate consistent terminology\, valuation methodologies\, and reporting systems for identifying project status and differential between projects. The application of the SRMS is highly recommended for stakeholders\, financiers\, or regulatory bodies involved in the commercial development of a CCUS project. \n\nAbout the Speaker\nPaul Lyford is the General Manager Planning Portfolio & Resource Management at Santos Ltd\, an Australian oil and gas company and the first to add CO2 Storage resources to the annual reserves report. Paul has over 30 years experience and has been involved in many field developments across Australia. He has a background in reservoir engineering\, operations\, planning\, strategy and commercial. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia\, a member of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and member of Society of Petroleum Evaluation engineers (SPEE). Paul holds an honors degree and PhD in Engineering from University of Melbourne and post graduate qualifications in Finance. Paul is currently a member of the SPE CO2 Storage Resources Committee (CSRC) and part of the SPE SRMS subcommittee charged with updating the SRMS. \n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $40 <Until 21 Aug 2024>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $60 <Until 21 Aug 2024>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                           $70 \nDate:              Wednesday\,  28 August 2024 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration & Networking. \nTime:             5:00 pm – 5:10 pm Annual General Meeting. \nTime:             5:10 pm – 5:50 pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             5:50 pm – 6:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:00 pm – 7:30 pm Closing with networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors is kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical events. SUMMARY:A Modern-Day Gold Rush: Lithium in Brines
DESCRIPTION:Lithium in brines in southeast Saskatchewan: a modern-day gold rush \nThe Speaker \nDr. Ben Rostron\, is the 2024 Birdsall-Dreiss Distinguished Lecturer. He is a Professor Emeritus of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta and President of Isobrine Solutions Inc. He holds a BASc in Geological Engineering (1986) from the University of Waterloo\, and earned his MSc (1990) and PhD (1995) in Geology from the University of Alberta. \nHe started his academic career at the University of Saskatchewan in 1994\, Ben conducted pioneering hydrogeological mapping of the Williston Basin\, continuing extensive fieldwork since his first wellhead formation-water sample in 1996. Returning to the University of Alberta in 1997\, he taught Regional and Petroleum Hydrogeology until his retirement in 2021\, emphasizing applied research addressing real-world challenges. \nBen’s initiatives extended to practical applications\, notably founding Isobrine Solutions Inc. in 2004. His research led to an understanding of the unique distribution of lithium in the subsurface\, a rush for mineral brine permits in Saskatchewan\, and ultimately\, in part to the creation of several new lithium exploration/production companies attempting to exploit a new type of lithium-brine resource in the province and beyond. \nThe Talk \nThere is currently an enormous exploration interest in brine-hosted lithium from the Duperow/Leduc aquifer in Western Canada. Published concentrations of lithium up to 259 mg/L are found in southeast Saskatchewan\, significantly higher than those currently being exploited further west in west central Saskatchewan and Alberta. Yet\, the origin of this difference within a single formation has received little attention in the open literature. The question remains: what controls the distribution of lithium in subsurface brines? A second question is: why are there extreme variations in lithium concentrations mapped very close together? \nBen will address these questions and he will review this new type of brine-hosted lithium resource from southeast Saskatchewan and provide the latest public results from this active exploration play. \nAbout the Event \nPrice:            SPE/AusIMM Member          $45 \n                         Non-Member                         $65                       \nDate:              Tuesday\,  20 August 2024 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel \, 14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             5:00 pm – 5:50 pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             5:50 pm – 6:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Closing with networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors is kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical events. SUMMARY:Revamping Gas Facilities for a Greener Future: Transforming Brownfields into CCS Hubs – The Kent Way
DESCRIPTION:Brownfield modifications to convert existing gas production facilities for CCS operations \nSpeaker: \nChristopher Jones has 13 years of experience in process engineering and currently is a Principal Process Engineer at Kent PLC. He underwent an accelerated Honours (First Class) program at university in chemical engineering and completed an internship in Germany. Chris has been exposed to a wide breadth of industry projects allowing him to apply unique design approaches when tackling challenges in traditional oil and gas and emerging new energy industries. \n  \nAbstract: \nIn recent years\, traditional oil and gas operators have found novel means of extending the life of their assets and deferring onerous decommissioning costs by converting their facilities from gas production into carbon dioxide (CO2) injection. While the task of designing for CO2 may sound simple\, CO2 injection works in counter-intuitive ways\, with previously established heuristics derived from years of experience in gas condensate systems being quickly challenged as potentially dangerous. The world of designing CO2 systems is back-to-front compared with hydrocarbons; it isn’t simply a case of a change in flow direction. \nSome of the design challenges explored in this presentation include: large density variability in CO2 systems where a small change in the ambient temperature can significantly impact the pressure of a shut-in system; optimal pressure ratings of the vents and drains systems and how previous safety margins may be unsafe; pipeline hydraulic modelling focussed on new areas outside of the traditional suite of analysis\, such as assurance of the supercritical phase; understanding liquid water dropout; and what to modify in an existing gas-condensate production system. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Geothermal Energy: A pragmatic consideration of how to commercialize Australia’s misunderstood resource Australian CCUS in 2024 – project status\, policy and the future
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our July 2024 SPE WA Technical Meeting which will be held jointly with PESA. \n\n  \nAbout the Presentations\nGeothermal Energy: A pragmatic consideration of how to commercialize Australia’s misunderstood resource \nGeothermal energy is a readily available\, reliable\, zero-emissions resource that provides numerous advantages in a balanced energy portfolio\, as well as societal and environmental benefits\, that can help Australia meet its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050. \nRenewable energy projects are central to achieving Australia’s decarbonization objectives: electricity is the largest source of emissions in Australia\, at ~33% of the national total. Recent trends have seen substantial decreases in power-related generation in the past decade; however\, existing and planned wind\, solar and battery storage projects are not capable of offsetting planned retirements of thermal power plants – especially when considering anticipated increases in electricity demand and baseload supply issues. Supply shortfalls and grid reliability issues represent serious risks to safe\, secure\, clean and affordable energy. \nGeothermal resources address these issues by providing flexible\, dispatchable\, baseload power that complements solar and wind projects by providing “always-on” power\, supplementing those significant\, but intermittent resources. Furthermore\, geothermal is highly scalable\, allowing fit-for-purpose power solutions\, including behind the meter provision\, “islanded” grids in remote areas\, and baseload or dispatchable supply to the grid in more populous areas. \nThis talk provides an overview of geothermal energy in an Australian context\, including next-generation technologies that have transformed the global industry over the past decade; the benefits and challenges that will shape the sector in the coming decades; and critical commercial\, regulatory\, ESG and other success factors that will drive geothermal energy as a significant component of Australia’s decarbonized future. \n  \nAustralian CCUS in 2024 – project status\, policy and the future \nCCS project maturation in Australia has seen highs and lows since it was first initiated 1999 with the GEODISC study. Changes in government support and market forces have seen periods of greater activity (notably 2008-2011 with state and Federal support for CCS to address coal emissions thorough the CCS Flagships program) through to the doldrums of the 2010’s with the removal of both CCS incentives (carbon tax and meaningful emission reduction schemes)  and wholesale government support through funding. \nThe 2020’s saw a change in public sentiment and the setting of corporate\, state and national Net Zero 2050 targets which supported a renewed interest in CCS in Australia\, this time linked to emission reduction from LNG gas processing\, hard to abate industries and the rise in third party CCS as a service hubs. \nIn this talk Rosie will give a look back on CCS in Australia\, give a view of the current status of projects and potential future trends. \n  \n  \nAbout the Speakers\nDr Trey Meckel has more than has more than 30 years of experience at the forefront of the global energy sector\, including decarbonised energy solutions\, petroleum E&P\, and energy R&D. \nPresently\, Dr Meckel is the Head of Subsurface for Earth’s Energy\, Australia’s only pure play ASX-listed geothermal company; and Chief Exploration Officer for Groundbreaking Energy\, a privately held Australian geothermal company. SUMMARY:Distinguished Lecturer: Well Dynamic Simulation – Challenging the “Just Do This” Approach
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our June 2024 SPE WA Lunch Time Technical Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nOver the last decade\, dynamic simulation has increasingly been integrated into day-to-day well and production operations\, and decision-making processes. This presentation will showcase well dynamic simulations supporting the full life cycle of well operations\, including well clean-up\, field start-up\, production operations\, well intervention and field abandonment. These case studies highlight the importance of a cross-disciplinary approach to foster strong collaborations between the field-based supervisor and the office-based engineer carrying out the simulations. When operational parameters are properly incorporated into simulations\, the results can provide great insights\, enabling field supervisors to carry out operations in a safe and efficient manner. Field supervision becomes more relaxed and assured as emergent situations have already been anticipated through simulations that include multiple what-if scenarios. A successful application of well dynamic simulation provides an informed challenge to experience-based bias that is common in operations organizations\, which often results in a “just do this\, because it worked well in the past” approach. So\, let’s simulate operations to anticipate the expected and unexpected before going out to the field. Your operations will be safer\, more predictable\, and more enjoyable! \n  \nAbout the Distinguished Lecturer:\nRyosuke YOKOTE (Rio) is a Senior Petroleum Engineer with Eni Australia. He has over 29 years of industry experience in Australia\, Timor-Leste\, Indonesia\, and Japan. His experiences include operations engineering support\, planning and supervising various well operations\, flow assurance engineering as well as hands-on drilling crew during the early days of his career. He has authored and co-authored multiple technical papers on intelligent completions\, advanced perforation technique and application of well dynamic simulation to support operations. Rio graduated from Tohoku University in 1993 with a BSc and in 1995 with an MSc\, both in Resource Engineering. \n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 29 May 2024>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 29 May 2024>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Wednesday\, 5 June 2024 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             11:45am – 12:00pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             12:00pm – 12:50pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             12:50pm – 1:00pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             1:00pm – 2:30 pm  Networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Distinguished Lecturer: Carbon Capture and Storage and the CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS)
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our May 2024 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nAfter the lecture\, members will understand the importance of carbon capture and storage in the transition to a lower carbon future\, and know how to evaluate quantities consistently using the SRMS. \n\nAs part of the international effort to combat global warming\, significant attention is being given to ways to sequester (store for the long-term) carbon dioxide\, which is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect. It is therefore critical that there is a universal means to record the storable quantities by recognizing the maturity of the projects to be implemented and the confidence that can be placed in the estimated volumes to be sequestered. \n\nThis talk will look at some of the ways in which carbon dioxide can be stored and provide a review of the CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS) framework prepared by the Society of Petroleum Engineers to classify and categorize the storable quantities. \n\nThe talk will cover:\n• An overview of carbon capture\, utilization and storage\, including the role of greenhouse gasses in global warming\n• Discussion of typical modes of storage of carbon dioxide in saline aquifers and depleted oil and gas fields\n• Review of the CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS)\, including principles and key definitions\n• Discussion of economics and evaluation methods\n• A hypothetical example \n  \nAbout the Speaker\nRawdon Seager is a reservoir engineer with over 50 years’ experience in the international oil and gas arena with Shell\, Huffco and\, since 1985\, Gaffney\, Cline & Associates\, where he is Chief Reservoir Engineer and Global Director of Quality Assurance. He is currently ivolved in CCS studies and application of the SRMS. He has a BSc in Physics from Bristol University and an MSc in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College\, London. Rawdon is past Chairman of the SPE Oil and Gas Reserves Committee and past member of the Board and current Chair of the Reserves Definitions Committee of the SPEE.

SUMMARY:SPE-WA Geomechanics SIG TALK 23-Apr-2024
DESCRIPTION:SPE-WA Geomechanics SIG is proud to present the details of our talks in April 2024. (There will be two talks) \nTALK-1: \nHydrogen geo-storage in rock salt formations: Petrophysical characterisation and geomechanical testing of a potential host formation in Western Australia \nThis is a presentation on the evaluation of the potential suitability of a rock salt formation for waste disposal or energy/gas storage. We consider the case of the Frome Rocks salt dome (depth > 600 m) in the Canning basin\, Western Australia. This evaluation involves the characterization of the petrophysical\, mineralogical and geomechanical properties of rock salt samples from two contrasting facies\, identified from recovered core material: a shallower (800m) heterogeneous facies with 40% halite and 38% of dolomite inclusions (mm to cm); and a deeper (1100m) homogeneous\, halite-rich facies (98%). \nThe dataset includes porosity and gas permeability estimation as a function of confining pressure (or depth); and multi-stage triaxial (MTXL) testing at four distinct confining pressures\, one of which corresponding to the confining pressure prevailing at the depth of recovery of each sample. MTXL tests allow to simulate the impact on the mechanical properties of depth within the formation; and that of the stress perturbations induced by drilling/excavation operations. During each stage of an MTXL test\, gas transmission and creep were also evaluated under hydrostatic and deviatoric stress conditions. \nThe heterogeneous (homogeneous) salt facies exhibits a porosity of 0.8 – 1.1% (0.2 – 0.3%)\, and a gas permeability of 50 – 500 D (1 – 20 D)\, within the confining pressure interval 0 – 16 MPa. Each MTXL test lasted about 80 days\, essentially due to the time-consuming nature of the gas transmission and creep evaluations. The two salt facies have a remarkably contrasting mechanical and petrophysical response to hydrostatic and deviatoric stresses; both facies\, however\, behave in a rather ductile manner at their native depth\, i.e.\, plastic yield rather than brittle fracturing/faulting. \nMustafa Sari holds a Ph.D. in Geomechanics from UNSW (2019). Currently\, in his role as a Research Scientist at CSIRO\, Kensington\, WA\, he is focusing on hydrogen storage in salt caverns and depleted gas reservoirs from a geomechanical perspective. \nTALK-2:\nThe exciting applications of 3D Geomechanics in addressing the challenges in the O&G industry \nGeomechanics is increasingly becoming an important component of reservoir management from exploration to abandonment. If rock is removed (eg: while drilling) or pressure is changed in a reservoir (eg: depletion or injection) this alters the stress state of the rock.\nThis has cascading effect on the operation we are performing. \n• Drilling: Determining the safe mud weight drilling without incurring hole collapse or fracturing the formation\n• Completion: Determine safe draw-down without causing sanding issues\n• Hydraulic Fracturing: Determining the rock elastic properties and stress that are important inputs to the Hydraulic Fracture Stimulation designing.\n• Production optimization: If the rock has natural fractures and flow is thru fractures\, then how will the permeability change with stress in the life of the field.\n• Compaction and Subsidence: By how much will the reservoir compact or surface subside? \nThis presentation will go through how 1D and 3D Geomechanics models are constructed and their applications through examples. \nZachariah John Pallikathekathil (Zach) is currently the domain lead of Geomechanics and Acoustics in SLB\, based in Perth. \nABOUT THE EVENT \nAttending IN PERSON\nSPE Member $0 (Free)\nSPE Non-Member $ 10 (Introductory Offer) \nLocation: SLB Office\, Uluru conference room (5th Floor)\, 10\, Telethon Ave\, Perth\, 6000 \nAttending ONLINE\n(You will be able to join via MICROSOFT TEAMS. SUMMARY:Why Understanding Hydrodynamics is Critical in Exploration\, Appraisal\, Development and Production
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our April 2024 SPE WA Lunch Time Technical Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nWater flow occurs in ALL sedimentary basins from higher pressured to lower pressure areas.  Flow occurs via permeable beds away from meteoric intake areas or from over-pressured mudstones that are de-watering.  Another source of pressure variation is aquifer depletion due to hydrocarbon production\, or aquifer pressurisation due to fluid injection. To understand fluid flow\, pressure must be expressed as over-pressure variation\, the variation in potential\, equating to over-pressure above hydrostatic gradient or head (the height a water column would rise above MSL in a pipe intersecting the point of measurement).  Variation in fluid potential within the aquifer beneath a hydrocarbon field results in a variation in FWL over a field (tilted or stepped contacts).  This is not evident in most fields due to the small size of fields relative to the small variations in potential which are routinely interpreted as measurement error.  However\, when the variation is higher these tilts or steps can be very significant\, due to: \n\nLarge field areas\nFaults causing baffling\nLower permeabilities\nHigher water flows\nHigh density hydrocarbons where minor variation in potential causes significant tilting.\n\nIn this talk concepts such as overpressure\, potentiometric maps and sections and compartmentalised reservoirs are discussed.  Examples from all over the world are presented along with the impact on failed exploration wells and sub-optimum development plans.  Vertical variation in potential within fields is also discussed. Finally\, publicly available pressure data from the Perth Basin is reviewed and discussed to consider whether Perth Basin Fields are compartmentalised\, or have complexly stepped contacts. \nAbout the Speakers\nRobert Seggie and Peter van Ruth \nRobert worked as a petroleum geologist for over 40 years. He worked for BHP Petroleum\, Oil Company of Australia\, BMR (now GA)\, Santos\, as a consultant\, Woodside Energy and has now retired into an Adjunct Professor role at Curtin University together with some consulting. Robert has been a successful explorationist and development/production geologist. SUMMARY:Distinguished Lecturer: Well Integrity in the Operate Phase of the Well Lifecycle – Our Role as Crime Scene Detectives
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our March 2024 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nHaving a well Well integrity problem is not a sin\, but doing nothing about it is! \nGlobally\, there are over two millions wells\, and it is well documented that at least 40% have mechanical problems that require risk assessment and mitigation. Many of these wells are old and close to de-commissioning but day to day management remains a key issue.\n \nThis dynamic presentation shows and documents how over time\, key industry events have impacted the well construction and management process of our well stock. Changes are partly driven by regulations in one part of the world and utilised by other regions as best practices. Technical advances in engineering and sciences also create change by providing greater access to well data and well operational status. Finally\, software such as Well Integrity Management Systems (WIMS) has brought about an awareness of the wells status and how it can be better managed particularly as part of the ageing process.\n \nWell integrity is an exciting discipline that embraces a wide range of subjects and skills. Like crime scene investigation\, the evidence is provided – it’s a case of reviewing and understanding the data\, that ultimately leads you and the team to making a decision on the best way to manage your well(s). \n\nAbout the Speaker \nSimon began his career in 1978 working for Schlumberger in the Middle East. Over the next 25 years he worked globally for a variety of service providers and Operators in various field and office based roles both onshore and offshore as an Operations Engineer. Gaining a masters degree in 2005 he moved into Operations Management for a major independent operator and built his first well integrity management system\, publishing SPE MS-142449\, ‘Seven Pillars of Well Integrity’ which identified\, which established the key seven system ingredients for well integrity. \nConsiderable experience and knowledge was gained as a co-author of ISO Well Integrity Standard 16530-1. Now\, as an independent contractor\, he authors key operations related documents for a wide range of clients\, building well integrity management systems and providing training schools in many countries and languages for all types of wells.\n \nSimon is an active member of the SPE\, and is working on various committees to promote well integrity awareness on a global basis. \n\nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $40 <Until 28 Feb 2024>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $60 <Until 28 Feb 2024>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                           $70 \nDate:              Wednesday\, 6 March 2024 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             5:00 pm – 5:50 pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             5:50 pm – 6:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:00 pm – 7:30 pm Closing with networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Credibility of Geomechanical Sanding Evaluations\, Examples from Gas Fields in Otway\, Browse and Perth Basins
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our February 2024 SPE WA Technical Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nGeomechanical sanding evaluation has become a key tool in the development of fit-for-purpose sand management strategies and well completion decisions. Geomechanical analyses identify the likely sand producing intervals\, the timing (pressure conditions) and the severity of sanding. Sanding evaluations are ideally calibrated against field sanding observations. However\, in the absence of field observations\, the validity of geomechanical analyses can be a concern for field development planning\, well design or well intervention decision. This presentation focuses on the credibility of geomechanical sanding risk evaluation\, conducted at appraisal and early field life stages. It includes three field case studies from a range of geological settings\, stress regimes and rock strengths\, well types and operation conditions. The case studies include gas fields from offshore Otway Basin in Victoria\, and offshore Browse Basin and onshore North Perth Basin in Western Australia. The examples demonstrate the validity of geomechanical assessments conducted at early field life that are verified with several years of production later. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Abbas Khaksar is a global Geomechanics advisor and subject matter expert in sanding evaluation with Baker Hughes\, based in Perth.  Abbas has 29 years of work experiences and before joining Baker Hughes in 2009 worked for Helix-RDS (2005-09)\, Geomechanics International (GMI\, 2000-05)\, University of Adelaide (1998-2000) and Iran Geological Survey (1989-92). He holds PhD in Rock Physics (1999)\, MSc in Petroleum Geophysics (1994) and BSc in Mining Engineering (1989). He served the WA section of SPE as a board member and continuing education officer from 2012 to 2019. Abbas was a SPE Distinguished Lecturer for 2019-2020 on “Use of Geomechanics for sanding prediction and sand management”. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 14 Feb 2024>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 14 Feb 2024>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \n  \nSpecial Promotion Deal: Buy 1 ticket and bring 1 guest for free! SUMMARY:SPE GAIA: THE IMPACT OF THE ENERGY TRANSITION ON WATER RESOURCES: THE CASE OF GREEN HYDROGEN
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA GAIA is proud to present our February 2024 Sustainability Energy Series Lunch Time Technical Meeting.\n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe energy transition necessitates hydrogen generation to meet current energy needs. Low-carbon hydrogen (green hydrogen from renewable energy\, and blue hydrogen from gas with CO2 removal and storage) is touted as a replacement\, with most authors recognising the ‘green’ credentials of hydrogen. However\, as this seminar examines\, the impact of hydrogen generation on water resources in the driest inhabited country on Earth\, Australia\, has the potential to be devastating. This seminar examines the water use for hydrogen\, the laws regulating water at present\, and the deficiencies in such water regulation \nAbout the Speaker\nProfessor Tina Soliman Hunter is the Professor of Energy and Resources Law at Macquarie University\, and the Director of the Centre for Energy and Natural Resources Innovation and Transformation (CENRIT) at Macquarie. She teaches and researches in offshore energy law (both hydrocarbons and renewables)\, infrastructure decommissioning\, energy installations\, facility repurposing\, offshore CCS\, Arctic resources law and policy\, and energy law. Much of her research is multidisciplinary in nature\, and includes working with engineers\, geologists\, and political scientists.  She holds several visiting professor positions and is a member of the Educational Board of the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN)\, a Board member of the Aberdeen chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)\, and an editor of the Journal of International Petroleum Technology. \nAbout the Event (Note: venue is at the Wood Offices)\n\nPrice:           SPE Member                        $20\n                      Non-Member                        $30 \nDate:              Tuesday\, 13 February 2024 \nTime:             11:45am – 12:20pm Registration & Light Lunch\nTime:             12:20pm – 1:00 pm Opening remarks\, presentation and Q&A\nTime:             1:00pm – 2:00 pm  Networking \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Integrated Field Development Planning and its Value Chain
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our January 2024 SPE WA Lunch Time Technical Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nAn Integrated Field Development Planning (IFDP) is mainly defined as a subsurface and surface journey to select and execute the best development scenario for a field to maximize economic value and overall recovery of the asset. The maturation process of an IFDP consists of Framing (identify the opportunity)\, Front-End-Loading (FEL)\, Execution (authorisation)\, Operated and Evaluate and lastly the Abandonment. Each stage of the process can be viewed as “live cycle” and respective value and cost target be re-evaluated. This is to ensure that the IFDP cycle is meant for Value Creation (‘Doing the Right Project’) and for the Value Realisation (‘Doing the Project Right’)\,furthermore\, to ensure the opportunity still holds business value and relevant process remains aligned with the objectives and industry outlook. \nA comprehensive IFDP must deliver (but not limited to) Subsurface Characteristics\, Recoverable Reserve (range)\, Depletion Plan\, Emission Reduction Plan\, Facilities and Flow Assurance Plan\, Risk and Mitigation Plan\, HSE Plan\, Sales and Commercial Plan and Abandonment Plan. In recent years\, the Carbon Sequestration/Storage plan has also become an integral part of IFDP. Key Stakeholders of IFDP must be known and categorised based on their interest and involvements\, and responsibilities in the process. The two important categories of stakeholders are ones who have high interest (economically/commercially) in the project and those who will have voice\, concern or opinions (environmentally etc…). \nThis talk will cover key value drivers and steps for a successful Integrated Fidel development Planning (IFDP) and in context of techno-commerciality objectives of the maturation process. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nAli Sabzabadi is a Chartered Petroleum Engineer\, with 24 years of experience in the oil and gas industry working on and leading the delivery of field development planning for mature/green oil & gas fields\, and implementing improved oil recovery (IOR) and enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques. He has published and presented several papers in technical conferences and journals (IPTC\, OTC\, APOGCE\, SPE EOR Conferences). \nAli Sabzabadi is a graduate of the Imperial College of London where he studied Masters in Engineering (MEng) in Petroleum Engineering and member of the UK Engineering Council. \nIn his free time\, Ali enjoys Scuba Diving\, biking\, and spending time with his family. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 19 Jan 2024>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 19 Jan 2024>\n                       SPE Member                         $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Tuesday\, 23 January 2024 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             11:45am – 12:00pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             12:00pm – 12:45pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             12:45pm – 1:00pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             1:00pm – 2:30 pm  Networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:HISTORY OF ENERGY TRANSITION: What have the Romans (Energy Professionals) every done for us?
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our December 2023 SPE WA Technical Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nMark will deliver a light-hearted whimsical review of the ongoing human energy transition\, reflecting on the role played by energy professionals (Romans) in forever changing the world we live in. Starting in the paleolithic\, when catching and eating animals produced a bigger brain\, only a bunch of cave paintings\, hieroglyphs and a few cartoons of Larsen remain to attest to the beginning. Discovering fire\, the burning of carbon-based materials to gain heat\, cook food and scare the crap out of everything else was when problems began\, pretty much right away. Cutting down most of the trees\, we ate a buffet of wild animals\, whilst rejecting early versions of the paleo diet\, we ruined our teeth. We engineered new weapons we could turn on ourselves when the animals became too few led to millennia of conflict. Life was good but most of us died at birth or in early childhood\, survivors taken out mostly by a variety of sexually transmitted diseases or in pointless bloodthirsty battles\, rich in toxic masculinity. Compulsory superannuation was still in its infancy.\n \nThe Chinese “invented” coal 3500 years ago\, the Romans dabbled after the birth of Christ\, but not until the 18th century did coal really have its moment\, basking in long forgotten sunlight. Powering the industrial revolution\, perfecting child labour and blackening the skies\, mass production and the energy to move it quickly to consumers was delivered. About the same time a crazy colonel struck oil in Pennsylvania\, saving the whales and irrevocably shifting global power away from empire. Soon we had a tiger in our tank\, driving our gas guzzling automobiles to the store to buy pointless trinkets or enjoying a new past-time known as a vacation. The first Black Friday sale was held.\n \nFossil fuels\, more than any other enterprise\, have powered human development\, improving living conditions beyond our wildest imagination\, dramatically increasing human life expectancy. None of this could have been achieved without engineering. For millennia improvements relied on replacing one energy source with a more energy dense and efficient one. How do we transition to future fuel sources that are inherently less dense\, less efficient and with a footprint dwarfing anything that has come before? So\, what have the Romans (aka energy professionals) done for us? What role does a mere rock doctor play in this new world\, do we remain relevant or are we destined to the dust bin of history having done all we could to lay down the next super source rock? \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nDr Mark Lisk – Chief Geoscientist\, Ascendience Geoscience \nMark has experienced a continuous transition throughout his 30-year resource industry career. Joining the down-stream oil business at 16 in a petroleum engineering role\, pumping petrol at the local BP he realised there was way too much maths involved and instead chose to study geology at the University of Auckland. Briefly distracted by the allure of gold\, Mark worked epithermal exploration for BHP in the wild hills of the Coromandel\, dodging drug lords and rabid environmentalists\, before a resource industry reality check with his first redundancy. Returning to the oil patch in 1990 he left NZ for West Island to engage in scientific experiments on the Island of Dr Moreau\, aka CSIRO. Gazing intently at microscopic objects small in stature but with a big story to tell\, he became a true specialist\, knowing absolutely everything about nothing! With a half-finished PhD in tow and clutching his first redundancy cheque he joined Woodside in 2005 just in time for a boom in oil price. Widely\, but mistakenly considered a geochemist\, despite failing organic geochemistry twice at university\, Mark transitioned\, some might say blossomed\, becoming a regional geologist with a focus on Australian basins. His transition to a generalist\, knowing nothing about everything\, was now complete. Yearning to see geology beyond Australia\, a transition to International New Ventures beckoned\, complete with globetrotting travel opportunities. Almost too good to last the winds of Covid blew\, oil price collapsed again\, culminating in yet another redundancy. Cast adrift\, this time in a more palatial lifeboat\, latest redundancy payment providing a suitable cushion\, he took the plunge and started his own company. Now adept at the art of transitioning Mark has discovered a sweet life diversifying into new energies. SUMMARY:Influence of formation heterogeneity on reservoir performance of CCS projects in saline formations
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our November 2023 SPE WA Technical Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nPotential saline formation targets for carbon dioxide disposal must meet containment criteria for project success. In the selection process\, detailed reservoir characterisation of these formations should be undertaken to understand the impact of formation heterogeneity on containment of injected carbon dioxide. A reservoir simulation study was conducted to evaluate the impact of varying net-to-gross ratio\, shale barrier length and formation dip on the subsurface behaviour of injected carbon dioxide in a hypothetical marine sand reservoir model. The study results showed that heterogeneity has a significant impact on the behaviour of the plume and can improve containment of injected carbon dioxide. \n\nAbout the Speaker \nMatthew Flett is a senior reservoir engineer at Chevron Australia. Since joining the company in 2003\, he has served in exploration\, development\, and production roles for hydrocarbons and CCS developments in Australia. Flett has authored or coauthored more than 10 technical papers and holds one US patent. \nHe holds a BSc degree and a BEng degree with honours in chemical engineering from the University of Adelaide and holds a Doctoral degree in petroleum engineering from Curtin University of Technology. Flett is a member of SPE and currently serves with the SPE Australia / NZ / PNG council and is the chair elect of the CCUS Technical Section. He is the recipient of the 2013 and 2022 SPE Regional Service Awards for the Southern Asia Pacific Region. \n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 7 Nov 2023>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 7 Nov 2023>\n                       SPE Member                           $50\n                       Non-Member                           $70 \nDate:              Tuesday\, 14 November 2023 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             4:45pm – 5:00pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             5:00pm – 5:50pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             5:50pm – 6:00pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:00pm – 7:30 pm  Networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students.
