SUMMARY:Credibility of Geomechanical Sanding Evaluations\, Examples from Gas Fields in Otway\, Browse and Perth Basins
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our February 2024 SPE WA Technical Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nGeomechanical sanding evaluation has become a key tool in the development of fit-for-purpose sand management strategies and well completion decisions. Geomechanical analyses identify the likely sand producing intervals\, the timing (pressure conditions) and the severity of sanding. Sanding evaluations are ideally calibrated against field sanding observations. However\, in the absence of field observations\, the validity of geomechanical analyses can be a concern for field development planning\, well design or well intervention decision. This presentation focuses on the credibility of geomechanical sanding risk evaluation\, conducted at appraisal and early field life stages. It includes three field case studies from a range of geological settings\, stress regimes and rock strengths\, well types and operation conditions. The case studies include gas fields from offshore Otway Basin in Victoria\, and offshore Browse Basin and onshore North Perth Basin in Western Australia. The examples demonstrate the validity of geomechanical assessments conducted at early field life that are verified with several years of production later. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Abbas Khaksar is a global Geomechanics advisor and subject matter expert in sanding evaluation with Baker Hughes\, based in Perth.  Abbas has 29 years of work experiences and before joining Baker Hughes in 2009 worked for Helix-RDS (2005-09)\, Geomechanics International (GMI\, 2000-05)\, University of Adelaide (1998-2000) and Iran Geological Survey (1989-92). He holds PhD in Rock Physics (1999)\, MSc in Petroleum Geophysics (1994) and BSc in Mining Engineering (1989). He served the WA section of SPE as a board member and continuing education officer from 2012 to 2019. Abbas was a SPE Distinguished Lecturer for 2019-2020 on “Use of Geomechanics for sanding prediction and sand management”. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 14 Feb 2024>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 14 Feb 2024>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \n  \nSpecial Promotion Deal: Buy 1 ticket and bring 1 guest for free! SUMMARY:SPE GAIA: THE IMPACT OF THE ENERGY TRANSITION ON WATER RESOURCES: THE CASE OF GREEN HYDROGEN
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA GAIA is proud to present our February 2024 Sustainability Energy Series Lunch Time Technical Meeting.\n\nAbout the Presentation\nThe energy transition necessitates hydrogen generation to meet current energy needs. Low-carbon hydrogen (green hydrogen from renewable energy\, and blue hydrogen from gas with CO2 removal and storage) is touted as a replacement\, with most authors recognising the ‘green’ credentials of hydrogen. However\, as this seminar examines\, the impact of hydrogen generation on water resources in the driest inhabited country on Earth\, Australia\, has the potential to be devastating. This seminar examines the water use for hydrogen\, the laws regulating water at present\, and the deficiencies in such water regulation \nAbout the Speaker\nProfessor Tina Soliman Hunter is the Professor of Energy and Resources Law at Macquarie University\, and the Director of the Centre for Energy and Natural Resources Innovation and Transformation (CENRIT) at Macquarie. She teaches and researches in offshore energy law (both hydrocarbons and renewables)\, infrastructure decommissioning\, energy installations\, facility repurposing\, offshore CCS\, Arctic resources law and policy\, and energy law. Much of her research is multidisciplinary in nature\, and includes working with engineers\, geologists\, and political scientists.  She holds several visiting professor positions and is a member of the Educational Board of the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN)\, a Board member of the Aberdeen chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)\, and an editor of the Journal of International Petroleum Technology. \nAbout the Event (Note: venue is at the Wood Offices)\n\nPrice:           SPE Member                        $20\n                      Non-Member                        $30 \nDate:              Tuesday\, 13 February 2024 \nTime:             11:45am – 12:20pm Registration & Light Lunch\nTime:             12:20pm – 1:00 pm Opening remarks\, presentation and Q&A\nTime:             1:00pm – 2:00 pm  Networking \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Integrated Field Development Planning and its Value Chain
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our January 2024 SPE WA Lunch Time Technical Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nAn Integrated Field Development Planning (IFDP) is mainly defined as a subsurface and surface journey to select and execute the best development scenario for a field to maximize economic value and overall recovery of the asset. The maturation process of an IFDP consists of Framing (identify the opportunity)\, Front-End-Loading (FEL)\, Execution (authorisation)\, Operated and Evaluate and lastly the Abandonment. Each stage of the process can be viewed as “live cycle” and respective value and cost target be re-evaluated. This is to ensure that the IFDP cycle is meant for Value Creation (‘Doing the Right Project’) and for the Value Realisation (‘Doing the Project Right’)\,furthermore\, to ensure the opportunity still holds business value and relevant process remains aligned with the objectives and industry outlook. \nA comprehensive IFDP must deliver (but not limited to) Subsurface Characteristics\, Recoverable Reserve (range)\, Depletion Plan\, Emission Reduction Plan\, Facilities and Flow Assurance Plan\, Risk and Mitigation Plan\, HSE Plan\, Sales and Commercial Plan and Abandonment Plan. In recent years\, the Carbon Sequestration/Storage plan has also become an integral part of IFDP. Key Stakeholders of IFDP must be known and categorised based on their interest and involvements\, and responsibilities in the process. The two important categories of stakeholders are ones who have high interest (economically/commercially) in the project and those who will have voice\, concern or opinions (environmentally etc…). \nThis talk will cover key value drivers and steps for a successful Integrated Fidel development Planning (IFDP) and in context of techno-commerciality objectives of the maturation process. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nAli Sabzabadi is a Chartered Petroleum Engineer\, with 24 years of experience in the oil and gas industry working on and leading the delivery of field development planning for mature/green oil & gas fields\, and implementing improved oil recovery (IOR) and enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques. He has published and presented several papers in technical conferences and journals (IPTC\, OTC\, APOGCE\, SPE EOR Conferences). \nAli Sabzabadi is a graduate of the Imperial College of London where he studied Masters in Engineering (MEng) in Petroleum Engineering and member of the UK Engineering Council. \nIn his free time\, Ali enjoys Scuba Diving\, biking\, and spending time with his family. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 19 Jan 2024>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 19 Jan 2024>\n                       SPE Member                         $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Tuesday\, 23 January 2024 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             11:45am – 12:00pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             12:00pm – 12:45pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             12:45pm – 1:00pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             1:00pm – 2:30 pm  Networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:HISTORY OF ENERGY TRANSITION: What have the Romans (Energy Professionals) every done for us?
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our December 2023 SPE WA Technical Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nMark will deliver a light-hearted whimsical review of the ongoing human energy transition\, reflecting on the role played by energy professionals (Romans) in forever changing the world we live in. Starting in the paleolithic\, when catching and eating animals produced a bigger brain\, only a bunch of cave paintings\, hieroglyphs and a few cartoons of Larsen remain to attest to the beginning. Discovering fire\, the burning of carbon-based materials to gain heat\, cook food and scare the crap out of everything else was when problems began\, pretty much right away. Cutting down most of the trees\, we ate a buffet of wild animals\, whilst rejecting early versions of the paleo diet\, we ruined our teeth. We engineered new weapons we could turn on ourselves when the animals became too few led to millennia of conflict. Life was good but most of us died at birth or in early childhood\, survivors taken out mostly by a variety of sexually transmitted diseases or in pointless bloodthirsty battles\, rich in toxic masculinity. Compulsory superannuation was still in its infancy.\n \nThe Chinese “invented” coal 3500 years ago\, the Romans dabbled after the birth of Christ\, but not until the 18th century did coal really have its moment\, basking in long forgotten sunlight. Powering the industrial revolution\, perfecting child labour and blackening the skies\, mass production and the energy to move it quickly to consumers was delivered. About the same time a crazy colonel struck oil in Pennsylvania\, saving the whales and irrevocably shifting global power away from empire. Soon we had a tiger in our tank\, driving our gas guzzling automobiles to the store to buy pointless trinkets or enjoying a new past-time known as a vacation. The first Black Friday sale was held.\n \nFossil fuels\, more than any other enterprise\, have powered human development\, improving living conditions beyond our wildest imagination\, dramatically increasing human life expectancy. None of this could have been achieved without engineering. For millennia improvements relied on replacing one energy source with a more energy dense and efficient one. How do we transition to future fuel sources that are inherently less dense\, less efficient and with a footprint dwarfing anything that has come before? So\, what have the Romans (aka energy professionals) done for us? What role does a mere rock doctor play in this new world\, do we remain relevant or are we destined to the dust bin of history having done all we could to lay down the next super source rock? \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nDr Mark Lisk – Chief Geoscientist\, Ascendience Geoscience \nMark has experienced a continuous transition throughout his 30-year resource industry career. Joining the down-stream oil business at 16 in a petroleum engineering role\, pumping petrol at the local BP he realised there was way too much maths involved and instead chose to study geology at the University of Auckland. Briefly distracted by the allure of gold\, Mark worked epithermal exploration for BHP in the wild hills of the Coromandel\, dodging drug lords and rabid environmentalists\, before a resource industry reality check with his first redundancy. Returning to the oil patch in 1990 he left NZ for West Island to engage in scientific experiments on the Island of Dr Moreau\, aka CSIRO. Gazing intently at microscopic objects small in stature but with a big story to tell\, he became a true specialist\, knowing absolutely everything about nothing! With a half-finished PhD in tow and clutching his first redundancy cheque he joined Woodside in 2005 just in time for a boom in oil price. Widely\, but mistakenly considered a geochemist\, despite failing organic geochemistry twice at university\, Mark transitioned\, some might say blossomed\, becoming a regional geologist with a focus on Australian basins. His transition to a generalist\, knowing nothing about everything\, was now complete. Yearning to see geology beyond Australia\, a transition to International New Ventures beckoned\, complete with globetrotting travel opportunities. Almost too good to last the winds of Covid blew\, oil price collapsed again\, culminating in yet another redundancy. Cast adrift\, this time in a more palatial lifeboat\, latest redundancy payment providing a suitable cushion\, he took the plunge and started his own company. Now adept at the art of transitioning Mark has discovered a sweet life diversifying into new energies. Adaption is part and parcel of being a successful in the energy business\, where others see doom and gloom\, we see opportunity and with luck\, some free beer. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 6 Dec 2023>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 6 Dec 2023>\n                       SPE Member                           $50\n                       Non-Member                           $70 \nDate:              Wednesday\, 13 December 2023 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             4:45pm – 5:00pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             5:00pm – 5:50pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             5:50pm – 6:00pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:00pm – 7:30 pm  Networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Influence of formation heterogeneity on reservoir performance of CCS projects in saline formations
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our November 2023 SPE WA Technical Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nPotential saline formation targets for carbon dioxide disposal must meet containment criteria for project success. In the selection process\, detailed reservoir characterisation of these formations should be undertaken to understand the impact of formation heterogeneity on containment of injected carbon dioxide. A reservoir simulation study was conducted to evaluate the impact of varying net-to-gross ratio\, shale barrier length and formation dip on the subsurface behaviour of injected carbon dioxide in a hypothetical marine sand reservoir model. The study results showed that heterogeneity has a significant impact on the behaviour of the plume and can improve containment of injected carbon dioxide. \n\nAbout the Speaker \nMatthew Flett is a senior reservoir engineer at Chevron Australia. Since joining the company in 2003\, he has served in exploration\, development\, and production roles for hydrocarbons and CCS developments in Australia. Flett has authored or coauthored more than 10 technical papers and holds one US patent. \nHe holds a BSc degree and a BEng degree with honours in chemical engineering from the University of Adelaide and holds a Doctoral degree in petroleum engineering from Curtin University of Technology. Flett is a member of SPE and currently serves with the SPE Australia / NZ / PNG council and is the chair elect of the CCUS Technical Section. He is the recipient of the 2013 and 2022 SPE Regional Service Awards for the Southern Asia Pacific Region. \n  \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 7 Nov 2023>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 7 Nov 2023>\n                       SPE Member                           $50\n                       Non-Member                           $70 \nDate:              Tuesday\, 14 November 2023 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             4:45pm – 5:00pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             5:00pm – 5:50pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             5:50pm – 6:00pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             6:00pm – 7:30 pm  Networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Transforming How to Evaluate Wells and Unlock Reserves: Deep Transient Testing
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our October 2023 SPE WA Technical Lunch Time Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nDynamic data\, acquired using wireline formation testing or well testing techniques\, are used by operators to address uncertainties associated with reserve estimates and productivity\, while rationalizing field development and production costs. However\, these evaluation techniques provide dynamic data at different length scales\, and with different environmental footprint\, cost\, and operational constraints.\nTo help reduce development risks\, a Deep Transient Testing (DTT) technique was developed in response to an industry and customer need in 2015 and has been used since then by many oil companies. The method is a hybrid technique between wireline formation testing and Drill Stem Testing (DST) designed to meet local regulatory requirements to unlock reserves. It is based on innovations with higher resolution measurements\, pumping of large fluid volumes on wireline at higher rates\, extending testing time and circulating the produced fluids out of the well for safety and well control\, without the requirement for surface flaring. These features enable dynamic reservoir characterization in thicker formations\, higher permeabilities and with much deeper volume of investigation than previously available.\nPressure transient testing and sampling results from DTT technique is now becoming an important component in operating companies’ reservoir evaluation programs. The DTT technique is embedded in a digital framework to provide early reservoir fluids models and reservoir insights coupled to geological models\, so that well deliverability and prospect commerciality can be evaluated. DTT also aligns with global sustainable development goals\, by enabling reductions in CO2 emissions by up to 96% percent\, and offering high operational efficiency compared with other wireline formation testing systems to significantly reduce energy consumption. \nAbout the Speaker \nFrancois-Xavier Dubost focused for 27 years on reservoir performance evaluation and recently joined the SLB HQ team as Reservoir Technical Director. Graduated from Herriot Watt University with an MSc in Reservoir Evaluation and Management\, Francois has been looking at all angles of reservoir engineering topics from acquisition to interpretation and incorporation of the measurements into field models. He recently dedicated his interests in the field of Deep Transient Testing\, introducing this topic to the industry with the first published papers\, presenting it in different expert meetings and lectures\, and acting as a leader internationally to develop this new technique. Francois co-authored over 30 publications and filed over 10 patents predominantly on Formation Testing & Sampling. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member        $40 <Until 28 Sep 2023>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member         $60 <Until 28 Sep 2023>\n                       SPE Member                           $50\n                       Non-Member                           $70 \nDate:              Lunch Time on Tuesday\, 3 October 2023 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             11:45am – 12:10 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             12:10pm – 12:50pm Opening remarks and presentation.\nTime:             12:50pm – 1:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             1:00pm – 2:00 pm  Networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SUMMARY:Tech 101 Series - The Application of Chemical Tracers for Well\, Reservoir Surveillance and CCS
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis\n\nThe SPE Young Professionals Tech101 series is an event primarily targeted at entry to mid-level engineers within the oil and gas community\, to provide “101” level education on topics across the industry. \nProfessionals of all experience levels are open to come\, but keep in mind materials presented are catered to young professionals. \nAbstract\n\nTracer technology offers a powerful means for conducting production and reservoir surveillance\, which is both operationally simple to deploy\, cost effective and can measure flow properties less than one metre to ten’s of kilometres between wells. Surveillance using tracer solutions truly provide continuous multi-scale monitoring from a well to reservoir scale.  It utilizes flow through porous media and pipe flow in wells as the telemetry method to transport the signals to the sampling point. Therefore\, tracer technology is a viable alternative as permanent monitoring technology of choice for well surveillance in today’s field developments\, and it is a risk-free solution from both planning and deployment perspectives. In terms of reservoir surveillance\, inter well tracers not only provide an understanding of the preferential flow paths between injectors and production wells on a field wide scale\, they also provide a method of understanding reservoir connectivity\, verifying suspected flow barriers\, characterizing flood patterns\, estimating residual oil saturations between wells and analyzing the effects of volumetric sweep efficiency. \nMore recently\, interwell tracers have been used to monitor leakage from CO2 storage reservoirs and used in carbon accounting practices. Inflow tracing is designed to evaluate near wellbore flow performance such as verifying clean up\, identifying the location of water/gas breakthrough over time and quantifying flow. The co-implementation of both tracer technologies in the early stage of waterflood or EOR development offers unique ability to monitor wells/reservoir\, eliminating the need for expensive and time-consuming wireline interventions and overcome any wellsite logistics challenges.  An increased adoption of integrating inter well and inflow tracer interpretation can reduce uncertainty in history matching well/reservoir models and thus improve reservoir management strategies using assisted history matching tools or optimisers based on results obtained from the tracer signal responses. This presentation will discuss tracer project conceptualization\, design\, analysis workflow and implementation of combining inflow and interwell tracers. \nSpeaker – Edmund Leung\n\nEdmund Leung is currently the Senior Technology Advisor with RESMAN\, based in Perth\, Australia since June 2022. He was previously Vice President for Well Technology leading the RESMAN flow-related interpretation and R&D team\, based in Trondheim in Norway. He earned an Honors degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of New South Wales in Sydney\, Australia\, graduating in 1995. \nHe began his career as a Schlumberger reservoir engineering consultant\, specializing in well testing\, reservoir simulation\, data mining\, intelligent completion optimization\, and real-time production surveillance technology for digital field implementations. He has held numerous technical\, business development\, and management positions in his 15-year career with Schlumberger\, with assignments in Australia\, Indonesia\, Malaysia\, Kuwait\, Saudi Arabia\, United States\, and United Arab Emirates. \nBefore joining RESMAN\, Edmund was the Global Reservoir Domain Leader in Schlumberger’s Completion and Sand Management Services segment based in Stavanger\, Norway\, specializing in sand control\, flow control modeling\, monitoring and R&D. SUMMARY:Making Good Decisions Half-Day Masterclass: Would you know a Good Decision if you saw one?
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION \nSuitable for \nAll people who provide information for\, or make\, decisions under conditions of novelty\, uncertainty or complexity – from relatively minor decisions (e.g. to collect data\, do “studies”\, hire a team member)\, through “project” level decisions (e.g. exploration\, production enhancement) up to major decisions (eg field development\, M&A\, strategy\, portfolio).  It is equally applicable to personal decisions! \nContext \nBusiness outcomes are largely determined by two factors: the decisions we make and uncertainties over which we have no control.  The best we can do to get good outcomes is to make good decisions – but would you know a good decision if you saw one? Like many other disciplines\, good decision-making ability does not arise from “natural talent”\, rather\, from learning and developing a set of skills and “tools”\, honed by experience.  However\, most people have not been taught how to do this and they do not just “stumble across” it. \nContent \nBusiness outcomes are largely determined by two factors: the decisions we make and uncertainties over which we have no control. \nThe workshop will introduce key concepts in Decision Analysis (DA) and the Decision Dialogue Process (DDP) – a non-proprietary\, rigorous (scientifically underpinned) approach to decision-making\, used for over 50 years in a variety of sectors (oil & gas\, pharmaceuticals\, IT\, military\, aviation\, sport\, environmental management ….. ) for decisions whose outcomes are not fully predictable and which must be made within time & budget constraints. \nIt consists of a prescriptive\, pragmatic methodology (process and tools) that is decision-agnostic and entirely scalable in that It balances the effort/cost of making a decision against its importance/consequences/ difficulty/cost.  Thus\, it is applicable to a wide range of decisions – one paradigm fits all\, but one size does not! \nAttendees will be expected to respond to questions about decision-making and engage in small group discussions and exercises – and take way some immediately implementable ideas for improving their decisions and thus chances of getting desired outcomes. \n  \nFeatured Speaker \nSteve Begg is an oil and gas industry expert on decision-making under uncertainty\, including asset and portfolio economic assessments and the psychology of decision-making\, particularly bias assessment and mitigation.  He is co-author of the book\, “Making Good Decisions”\, commissioned by the Society of Petroleum Engineers. \nHe is an Emeritus Professor of Petroleum Engineering and Management at the Australian School of Petroleum at the University of Adelaide\, where he has worked since 2002. Before joining the university\, Steve was Director for Decision Science and Strategic Planning with Landmark Graphics Corporation (a Halliburton company) where he was responsible for leading improved economic evaluation and decision-making for both Landmark and its customers.  Earlier\, he worked with BP for 13 years\, the last 6 of which were spent in a variety of senior geo-science and engineering operational assignments in Alaska\, which spanned production forecasting\, economic evaluation\, petroleum engineering\, and reservoir characterization roles. He also spent seven years as a researcher and Project Manager with BP Research\, where his focus was on risk and uncertainty assessment related to reservoir modelling.  His decision-making expertise is grounded in his understanding of the industry\, surface and subsurface. \nSteve is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and delivers in-house short-courses on decision-making and economic evaluation topics.  In 2003 he was a SPE Distinguished Lecturer on the topic “I would rather be vaguely right than precisely wrong: a new approach to investment decision-making” and was so again in 2011 on the topic “Reliability of Expert Judgements and Uncertainty Assessments”. \nIn 2000 he chaired an SPE Forum on the topic of “Adding Value by Leveraging Risk\, Options and Portfolio Management” and later Chaired the SPE Forum Co-ordinating Committee.  He currently sits on the SPE M&I Discipline Committee and the SPE Distinguished Lecturer Committee. In 2014 he was elected to the Board of the Society of Decision Professionals. \nSteve has published numerous papers on topics such as: decision-making under uncertainty; asset and portfolio investment evaluation/economics; psychological factors in judgement & decision-making (bias assessment and mitigation when eliciting subject-matter-expert opinions’ and uncertainty assessments); and reservoir characterization (heterogeneity/uncertainty modelling and up-scaling). He was instrumental in starting the SPE Economics and Management journal.  His contributions to decision-making and economic evaluation have been recognized by receiving the SPE Asia-Pacific regional award\, and in 2016 the SPE’s top International Award for the Management and Information discipline. \nSteve holds a PhD degree in Geophysics and a BSc degree in Geological Geophysics from Reading University and has attended executive education short courses at MIT and the University of Texas at Austin. \n \nEvent Run Sheet \n\nRegistration open from 8:30 am\nMasterclass start from 9:00 am\nMasterclass finish at 1:00 pm\n\nCost: \nSPE Members:                                $95.00 \nNon-members:                                 $120.00

SUMMARY:SPE WA GAIA Sustainability Energy Series
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA GAIA Sustainable Energy Series. Dive into the Future of Energy with Two Captivating Presentations.\n\nEnergy Literacy for the Energy Transition\nEnergy is one of the hot button topics of the day. Our news feeds are filled with energy-related stories\, often liberally sprinkled with terms like firming\, storage\, intermittency and capacity factor\, as well as the basic terms “power” and “energy” – which sadly are often confused. Intermingled with the jargon is a plethora of units and acronyms: kW\, kWh\, PJ\, eV\, EV\, LNG\, BESS and FESS and hundreds more. Without delving too far into the physics\, Nick’s talk will provide some clarity around the basic concepts of energy and power\, and show several examples to help sense check some of claims and counter claims that are made in this politically contentious field. \nSpeaker – Nick Last\nNick Last is a petroleum engineer and co-founder of the consultancy Well Test Knowledge International (WTKI). He has consulted for numerous operators in the APAC region\, specialising in the evaluation of wells and reservoirs. His interest in broader energy matters was sparked during a road trip through WA a few years ago\, which by chance passed by the Emu Downs wind and solar farms. Despite working for decades in the energy industry\, he suddenly realised that he didn’t really understand the nature of the power they produced\, or how they fitted into our energy system. Since then he’s devoted considerable time to rectifying that knowledge deficit. Nick has a BSc. In Physics from Imperial College\, London\, and he currently serves on the SPE WA Gaia sub-committee. \n\nAustralia’s Energy Transition: Risks and Opportunities\nThe energy transition is well underway in Australia\, driven by our commitment to reduce emissions under the Paris Agreement and also rising pressure from banks and investors for companies to play their part in helping decarbonize our economy in a swift and orderly manner. With the physical impacts of climate change becoming increasingly apparent in Australia and globally\, there is a pressing need to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. Leveraging Rystad Energy’s data and analysis on the Australian and global energy markets\, Sally will outline where we are in the transition process and the challenges and opportunities this poses for our energy industry. \nSpeaker – Sally Bogle\nSally Bogle is a Senior Editor with Rystad Energy’s Analytics team with a primary focus on the APAC region. Sally has longstanding experience as an energy journalist\, copywriter\, researcher and editor specializing in gas & LNG\, renewables\, climate risk disclosure\, electrification and energy transition technologies. Prior to joining Rystad Energy\, she worked as a writer and researcher for a range of private and public sector organizations globally\, including Accenture\, IHS Markit (CERA Global Insight)\, the International Energy Agency\, RSM\, L.E.K.\, Futureproof Consulting\, Monash University\, and Endeavour Mining. She has also written as a journalist for FT Energy\, S&P Global Platts\, Petroleum Economist\, Guardian Australia\, lnterfax Global Energy Service\, Schwartz Media and others. \n\nAbout the Event\nPrice:             SPE Member           $40\n                       Non-Member          $60       \nDate:              Thursday\, 17 August 2023 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel   14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             16:45 am – 17:00 pm Registration & Networking.\n                       17:00 pm – 18:15 pm Introduction and presentation\n                       18:15 pm – 19:30 pm Closing with networking drinks & nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students. SPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors is kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical events. SUMMARY:Repurposing networks for Hydrogen
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nThis presentation is an overview for repurposing and the potential blockers with respect to current code compliance based on Wood case studies of international code requirements and recent repurposing study work.  \nBased on rudimental calculations\, comparing both energy Natural Gas (NG) and H2 carriers\, repurposed pipelines can be capable of achieving circa 80-90% of the energy flow rate if design pressure can be maintained\, or 50-60% if the design pressure is de-rated. If other operational restrictions are considered\, such as flow velocity it can potentially have additional knock-on effect on the achievable flowrate and consequently to energy ratio.  \nThe feasibility of pipeline repurposing for hydrogen service is critical to the energy transition. Careful consideration of code requirements\, and further research and development currently ongoing is required in order to remove over-conservatisms in design to maximise the achievable energy flow rate when repurposing to hydrogen service. \nPresented by\n\nCallum Peace\nCallum is a chartered engineer working 15+ years in onshore and offshore from concept to detailed design\, procurement and installation. He has executed numerous H2\, H2 Blending and H2 vector studies. Additionally\, Callum leads Wood’s H2/CCUS pipeline R&D team. \n  \nAbout the Event\n\nPrice: \n\nSPE Member $10\nNon-Member $15\n\nBring a friend for free\, but it must be in the same registration.\nAdd your friend’s name to the field “Additional Guest Name” on the checkout page. \nDate:             Wednesday 9th of August 2023 \nLocation:      Flux Basement\, 191 St Georges Terrace\, Perth WA \nTime: \n\n4:45 pm – 5:00 pm Registration and Networking\n5:00 pm – 5:45 pm Presentation and Q&A Session\n5:45 pm – 6:45 pm Networking Drinks & Nibbles

SUMMARY:The Forgotten Story of the World’s First MODU - Princess Royal Harbour\, Albany\, 1906
DESCRIPTION:Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our July 2023 SPE WA Technical Evening Meeting. \nAbout the Presentation\nToday\, there are approximately 500 rigs drilling for oil or gas in our oceans\, seas and lakes at a cost of more than a quarter of a billion dollars a day. But how many people know that one of the earliest\, if not the earliest\, Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU)\, was built and operated right here in Western Australia\, 117 years ago? \nDuring the dredging of Albany’s Princess Royal Harbour between 1901-04\, “a great flow of oil came up”. This led to New Zealand born mining engineer\, Charles E Watkins\, taking out a prospecting licence over the area and in 1906\, forming the Princess Royal Harbour Mineral and Oil Company NL. One of the conditions set by the Mining Warden was “all boring operations are to be carried out from a floating punt and not from a fixed staging…” \nLong forgotten documents\, government files\, newspaper articles and family archives reveal that these were the first wells in Australia\, and probably the world\, to be drilled from a floating vessel. \nNot only will you learn what a 1906 MODU looked like\, you will discover\, why oil was thought to be present\, what the Government Geologist had to say\, how the venture lead to the world’s first offshore fatality and the widow’s prolonged fight for a Workers’ Compensation payout. \nThe Provisional Directors of the company were respected Albany and Perth gentlemen of various backgrounds but it wouldn’t be Western Australia without the involvement of a colourful character or two\, or rivalry between Perth and Fremantle. \nA piece of Western Australia’s forgotten oil and gas history. \nAbout the Speaker – Don Poynton\nDon Poynton is a retired petroleum geologist who continues his involvement in the Australian petroleum industry by researching its history. \nDon graduated with an Honours degree in Science (Geology) from the Australian National University in 1971. He then spent the next 42 years working on most of Australia’s sedimentary basins for BOC of Australia\, Woodside\, Mesa Petroleum\, Western Mining Corporation’s Petroleum Division and at the time of his retirement was Manager of Exploration and Environment for Strike Energy. \nHe received the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia’s Meritorious Service Award in 2016. \nSince his retirement Don has taken an active role in coastal rehabilitation and natural history organisations. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $40 <Until the 11 July 2023>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $60 <Until the 11 July 2023>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Tuesday\, 18 July 2023 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             16:45 am – 17:00 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             17:00 pm – 17:10 pm Opening Marks.\nTime:             17:10 pm – 17:45 pm Presentation.\nTime:             17:45 pm – 18:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             18:00 pm – 19:30 pm Closing with Networking drinks & Nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors is kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical events. SUMMARY:Greenwashing and the Rise of Green-Hushing
DESCRIPTION:SPE WA is pleased to announce our joint-society meeting arranged in conjunction with ERL (Energy & Resources Law) and AIEN (Association of International Energy Negotiators).  Our speaker will be John Zadkovich\, Partner of Penningtons Manches Cooper\, who will deliver an informative and engaging talk on the hot topic on greenwashing and the rising of green-hushing. \nAbout the Presentation\nThe ESG matrix continues to expand with a myriad of legal and regulatory considerations for companies operating in the energy sector\, among others. It is at times measured\, at others – to quote those in the industry – ‘tedious’ and ‘onerous’. \nCertain of the ESG indices are laudable because of the benefits they bring\, relevantly mitigating the risk of greenwashing and engendering a more sustainable environment. However\, there is an increasing countereffect\, ‘green-hushing’\, whereby companies deliberately downplay their environmental/green credentials or simply keep them confidential. \nThis presentation touches on the current regulatory environment for greenwashing\, covering certain jurisdictions\, looks at the pros and cons of green-hushing\, and offers some practical tips. \nAbout the Speaker – John Zadkovich\nJohn advises on a range of energy\, trade and finance matters\, with particular expertise in international commercial arbitration\, investigations and public international law. \nHe has a strong legal and commercial understanding of the trade\, energy (including oil and gas\, mining/natural resources\, renewables)\, infrastructure and finance sectors. SUMMARY:Sidetracking with Whipstocks: An Efficient Method for Increasing Your Operational and Asset Value
DESCRIPTION:Organised by Main Technical Program\nAs the demand increases to lower overall cost of accessing reserves\, more reliable operations during the well construction process are required and refined methods for maximizing the value of existing assets must be considered. In drilling operations\, there are numerous reasons why sidetracking may be a planned or contingency event.  Additionally\, many if not all\, fields have existing assets that can potentially be utilized to reestablish or increase production while reducing cost and footprint associated with a new drill.  One option of sidetracking a well involves a ramp directionally anchored in the casing or open hole to create a window for future drilling and completion assemblies. Whipstock sidetracking has evolved as a viable solution to add operational value in both new and mature wells. \nThrough technological advances\, whipstock operations have become more efficient and can cover most applications for new drills and re-entries.  With additional evolutions in drilling capabilities and more complex wellbore design\, sidetracking in casing or open hole can provide an economical advantage over traditional contingency solutions.  From an overall cost per foot perspective\, multilateral and re-entry projects can reduce the operational spend to access additional reserves while reducing the environmental footprint. \nWith extensive run history and ever-increasing developments in equipment\, competency\, and data driven analytics\, the scope and success for whipstock sidetracking operations provides operators with lower risk options to further industry optimization. \nThis presentation will focus on identification of applications and methods to increase operational efficiency in the process of drilling and completing wells along with recovering stranded production in existing fields. \nSpeaker – Tom Emelander\nProduction Line Manager for Weatherford’s Whipstock Systems\nTom Emelander is the Product Line Manager for Weatherford’s Whipstock Systems. His early career focused on support and implementation of Casing Exit Technologies.  After gaining operational experience\, he was elevated to Technical Specialist where he guided his team to significant improvements in service quality.  His recent role is focused on increasing efficiencies\, developing new technologies\, and working with operators on highly innovative re-entry projects including multiple industry first installations. \nRegarded as a subject matter expert\, he has authored multiple technical papers and industry articles.  Tom has a Mechanical Engineering degree from Western Michigan University. \nAbout the Event\nPrice:             Early Bird SPE Member          $40 <Until the 1 May 2023>\n                       Early Bird Non-Member          $60 <Until the 1 May 2023>\n                       SPE Member                          $50\n                       Non-Member                          $70 \nDate:              Monday\, 8 May 2023 \nLocation:       Parmelia Hilton Hotel\nLocation:       14 Mill Street\, Perth WA 6000 \nTime:             16:45 am – 17:00 pm Registration & Networking.\nTime:             17:00 pm – 17:10 pm SPE WA Opening Marks.\nTime:             17:10 pm – 17:45 pm Presentation.\nTime:             17:45 pm – 18:00 pm Q&A Session.\nTime:             18:00 pm – 19:30 pm Closing with Networking drinks & Nibbles. \nFree tickets are available for Students\nSPE WA in conjunction with our sponsors is kindly sponsoring students to attend the monthly technical events.
