Dropped objects associated with drilling and construction SIMIOPS pose serious and costly hazard to subsea infrastructure. Traditional approaches used to predict dropped object seabed impact zones use a ‘simplified’ method, resulting in uncertainty and residual risk. High Fidelity dropped object non-linear simulations are required to better predict the trajectory and better manage risk and resources, however previous simulation attempts in commercially available software have resulted in prohibitively long computation times even for simplified geometries. An advanced nonlinear solver FLEXAS has demonstrated accurate and computationally efficient predictions of complex object fall trajectories. Case studies and validations against blind simulations and model tests will be presented along with the opportunity to setup a library of the simulation results for wider benefit of the subsea industry.
