About the Presentation
Potential saline formation targets for carbon dioxide disposal must meet containment criteria for project success. In the selection process, detailed reservoir characterisation of these formations should be undertaken to understand the impact of formation heterogeneity on containment of injected carbon dioxide. A reservoir simulation study was conducted to evaluate the impact of varying net-to-gross ratio, shale barrier length and formation dip on the subsurface behaviour of injected carbon dioxide in a hypothetical marine sand reservoir model. The study results showed that heterogeneity has a significant impact on the behaviour of the plume and can improve containment of injected carbon dioxide.
About the Speaker
Matthew Flett is a senior reservoir engineer at Chevron Australia. Since joining the company in 2003, he has served in exploration, development, and production roles for hydrocarbons and CCS developments in Australia. Flett has authored or coauthored more than 10 technical papers and holds one US patent.
He holds a BSc degree and a BEng degree with honours in chemical engineering from the University of Adelaide and holds a Doctoral degree in petroleum engineering from Curtin University of Technology. Flett is a member of SPE and currently serves with the SPE Australia / NZ / PNG council and is the chair elect of the CCUS Technical Section. He is the recipient of the 2013 and 2022 SPE Regional Service Awards for the Southern Asia Pacific Region.
