Synopsis

The SPE Young Professionals Tech101 series is an event primarily targeted at entry to mid-level engineers within the oil and gas community, to provide “101” level education on topics across the industry. Professionals of all experience levels are open to come, but keep in mind materials presented are catered to young professionals.

This event is free to sign up for Students who wish to attend.

Abstract

Real-time process twins are essential for efficiently operating systems to maintain integrity and profitability. This presentation explores the features and importance of process digital twins, using Wood’s in-house product, Virtuoso, as an example. Virtuoso provides real-time monitoring and forecasting of key flow assurance parameters, including pressures, temperatures, flow rates, holdups, densities, impurities, and inhibitor concentrations. This process twin serves as a vital operational tool, guiding operators to mitigate integrity and operational risks, minimize emissions, and maximize production. Additionally, it extends operators’ reaction time to unplanned shutdowns or trips, significantly reducing daily operational costs.

Virtuoso combines physics-based and digital capabilities, employing hydraulic, thermodynamic, and unit operations modeling during the design phase to inform integrated system responses. In the operational phase, it uses real-time field sensor data to monitor the field, trigger alarms for specific events, identify process anomalies, and provide predictive functionalities based on operator actions. By utilizing historical field data, the process twin learns and understands field-specific nuances, enhancing operator readiness. The process twin facilitates complete process digitalization, field operation verification, process and production optimization, decarbonization, and improved system integrity.

This presentation will also discuss Virtuoso’s monitoring, forecasting, and advisory functionalities through the lens of a couple of case studies, highlighting the value some of these capabilities add to operations.
