SPE WA Technical Luncheon – Scalable systems for reservoir modeling on modern hardware platforms
May 10, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
$30.00 – $55.00Abstract:
Over the last few years, the computational hardware architecture has changed significantly. Multicore processors, powerful desktops and laptops, graphical cards (GPU) with thousands of cores available for simulations – it is all now available for us at a very reasonable price range. One of the key challenges for reservoir simulation software is to be aligned with the hardware progress, and deliver performance results proportionate to the growth of the computational power available on the hardware market. If our software tools are capable of utilizing it efficiently, we should be able to remove the bottlenecks related to the simulation time, which would allow reservoir engineers to run models with required grid resolution and consider many realizations that are necessary for reliable decisions with account for uncertainty. In this talk, the author will discuss various types of computational platforms available for simulations these days, such as personal computers with CPU’s and GPU’s, high-performance clusters, public and personal computational clouds. The results, advances and potential bottlenecks combined with analysis of the performance and the ‘value for money’ of the modern hardware solutions will be discussed.
Presenter: Dmitry Eydinov
Dmitry holds the position of Business Development Director in Rock Flow Dynamics – a software company developing a reservoir simulator known as tNavigator. He completed an MSc in Applied Mathematics and Physics in the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in Russia. He holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from The University of Bergen in Norway. After graduation he was working several years in the MEPO team in SPT Group, and joined RFD in 2010. Dmitry has wide experience in numerical reservoir modelling and software development.
