Abstract:

First came Piper Alpha, then years later came Macondo and Montara in quick succession. The question is: Why? Why did these two more recent Incidents occur if we had learnt lessons from Piper Alpha and implemented the appropriate corrective actions?

Dr Rhona Flin from the University of Aberdeen and her team were tasked by the IOGP to investigate and report on this question. Their first report published in 2012, clearly indicates that these incidents could be attributed to human factors and not the lack of procedures. Two more reports followed that defined six core Non-Technical Skills and a syllabi, from which a number of training organizations around the world have already developed into two or three day training programs. Although this is a step in the right direction, the question that still needs to be addressed is: How can we ensure that once our people become aware of these non-technical skills, that they can then actually implement them?

From a psychological point of view, a person can learn a new concept in a matter of minutes, but it takes approximately two years of implementation for it to become a permanent change in their behavior. The aim of this presentation is to recognizes the question asked and introduce a continuous Personal Development strategy, which has over 100 academic years of experience behind it and been applied over the past 25 years here in Australia, to help each individual become a more effective team member and implement the required long term change.

Speaker: Jeanne Alexandra Boles

Jeanne has over 10 years’ experience in Well Servicing Operations, Training and Management, with Schlumberger, on land and offshore operations, in shallow and deep water environments, across four continents, giving her a greater insight into the way in which people and organisations function. Over the last year, Jeanne has worked with Well Control Training providers to focus on Technical Training and has in the last year had the honour of working with a local Industrial Psychologist to develop one of the first IADC approved Well Operations Crew Resource Management (WOCRM) programs for Welltrain.

During Jeanne’s career, she has always been actively involved in mentoring and developing material to teach internal and external clients and has decided to take Personal Development to the next level and set up her own Consulting and Coaching business, that combines the understanding of the Technical and Training needs of the O&G Industry and the concepts of Continuous Personal Development to offer individuals the tools required to achieve their goals and ultimately the goals of their organisations.
