A message from the Distinguished Lecturer:
Next month I’m staying at home in Perth, Australia to visit members of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) in the SPE WA Section to deliver a Distinguished Lecturer talk. Distinguished Lecturer Program (spe.org) I feel particularly honoured to have been nominated as a SPE Distinguished Lecturer (DL) and hope that I can contribute to the aims of the program and the benefit of the attendees and learn from the members.
The SPE is a not-for-profit professional association with more than 119,000 members in 138 countries engaged in the exploration and production of oil and gas and related energy resources. The purpose of the DL program is to provide SPE sections with outstanding speakers for section meetings, and to recognize the professional contributions of the selected Distinguished Lecturers. The program promotes SPE’s mission to connect a global community of engineers, scientists, and related energy professionals to exchange knowledge, innovate, and advance their technical and professional competence regarding the exploration, development, and production of oil and gas and related energy resources to achieve a safe, secure, and sustainable energy future.
For my lecture, I’ll be reflecting how Covid brought into focus the detrimental impact that significant external changes can have on everyone’s mental health, and particularly so for us in the E&P business where separation and distance became increased challenges. Taking this as a learning opportunity to prepare ourselves mentally for future challenges, the maintenance of physical assets can be paralleled with mental health risks, and established tools applied to identify and control these risks. Solutions provided by the offshore workforce may help guide us all in dealing with the certainty of the next crisis no matter what it relates to or when it occurs.
