Tech 101 Series – Verifying well barriers for suspension and P&A

July 27, 2023 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Free

Synopsis

This presentation focuses on well barriers and their significance in maintaining well integrity, as outlined in the NORSOK D-010 standard. The main points to be discussed include the definition of well barriers, the various types of barriers employed, their specific application in suspension and abandonment operations, regulatory requirements for testing, the degradation of common barriers during testing, challenges associated with testing, verification methods, and emerging technologies for ensuring well integrity.

The presentation begins by providing a comprehensive definition of well barriers according to the NORSOK D-010 standard. It explores the primary and secondary barriers, emphasizing their roles in preventing uncontrolled fluid flow within wells and maintaining wellbore safety. Special attention is given to well barriers used in suspension and P&A scenarios. The presentation highlights the unique considerations and requirements for establishing robust barriers during these critical phases of well life cycle management.

The regulatory framework governing the testing of well barriers is discussed, emphasizing compliance with industry standards and government regulations. The presentation examines the specific requirements for testing well barriers to ensure their reliability and functionality under expected pressure and temperature conditions. The degradation of common well barriers during testing is addressed, shedding light on potential challenges and vulnerabilities that can impact barrier performance. The presentation also explores the associated difficulties in testing well barriers, such as limited access, well integrity, well status, well design, environmental conditions, and operational constraints.

Various verification methods for testing well barriers are reviewed. The advantages, limitations, and best practices for each method are discussed to facilitate effective barrier verification.
Finally, emerging technologies aimed at enhancing well barrier verification and ensuring long-term well integrity are explored. These advancements may include novel monitoring systems, real-time data analytics, and advanced data transmission systems.

Overall, this presentation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of well barriers, their importance in well integrity, and the regulatory requirements and challenges associated with testing and verification. By exploring new technologies, attendees will gain insights into the evolving landscape of well barrier verification, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding well construction, intervention, and maintenance activities.
