19th October 2022 SPE WA Technical Meeting – An Independent Perspective on CCS in the UK

October 19, 2022 @ 4:45 pm - 7:30 pm

$40.00 – $70.00

Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of the October 2022 Technical Evening Meeting.

About the Presentation

The presentation aims to outline the rapidly evolving CCS opportunity in the UK from the perspective of an independent, integrated consultancy working closely with government and industry. This has been a journey to promote and evaluate the national CCS resource, repurpose high-value infrastructure assets, licence and commercialize underground carbon storage projects against the backdrop of a mature offshore hydrocarbon basin, acute national energy security challenges and net zero commitments.

A chronological account of CCS in the UK is provided, dating back to around 2006, highlighting roadblocks encountered, as well as the emerging industry objectives and drivers that have brought us to the present day. Insight is afforded into opportunity maturation, the current status of projects and their regulation. The changing nature of the consultancy business and the transfer of skills between traditional oil and gas, and increasingly towards low carbon, in response to industry trends, is summarised.

The talk draws on experience gained in the UK CCS sector, with a focus on key technical risks and known success factors, making use of case studies where possible. It follows the pathway toward commercialisation of several distinct types of offshore storage assets – saline aquifer and depleted gas field – highlighting pertinent considerations for both.

It will review workflows developed and successfully applied in the UK to screen and select offshore CCS stores, from within existing portfolios or from strategic acreage allocated by the authorities. Finally, it outlines the approaches taken to mature short-listed projects through detailed subsurface evaluation and multi-disciplinary integration arriving at FID ready storage site development plans and will further highlight available resources from within the public domain.

The presentation will appeal to the sensibilities of the petroleum engineer, or geoscientist, who will readily identify parallels to their own skill-set and daily work activities in oil and gas.  Workflows revealed and lessons learned might be adopted in Australia and indeed elsewhere in view of current and future CCS assets and/or projects.

About the Speaker – Shaun Bambridge

Shaun Bambridge is a WA-based Senior Reservoir Engineer with Axis, an independent consultancy headquartered in Aberdeen, UK. He has almost two decades of international oil and gas industry experience that includes deployments for Operator, E&P and Oilfield Service company across Australia, Europe, Africa and the Middle-East. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of WA and a Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College London.

Founded in 2001, Axis have been closely involved with CCS in the UK since 2015, with Shaun being part of a broader multi-disciplinary team working on CCS scopes since that time. This includes CCS due diligence, license acquisition and portfolio screening through to subsurface evaluation, site select and storage development planning. Axis is currently involved in several commercial-scale CCS projects, pilot planning and the UK’s first ever CCS licensing round.
