Credibility of Geomechanical Sanding Evaluations, Examples from Gas Fields in Otway, Browse and Perth Basins

February 21 @ 4:45 pm - 7:30 pm

$40.00 – $70.00

Society of Petroleum Engineers Western Australia is proud to present the details of our February 2024 SPE WA Technical Meeting.

About the Presentation

Geomechanical sanding evaluation has become a key tool in the development of fit-for-purpose sand management strategies and well completion decisions. Geomechanical analyses identify the likely sand producing intervals, the timing (pressure conditions) and the severity of sanding. Sanding evaluations are ideally calibrated against field sanding observations. However, in the absence of field observations, the validity of geomechanical analyses can be a concern for field development planning, well design or well intervention decision. This presentation focuses on the credibility of geomechanical sanding risk evaluation, conducted at appraisal and early field life stages. It includes three field case studies from a range of geological settings, stress regimes and rock strengths, well types and operation conditions. The case studies include gas fields from offshore Otway Basin in Victoria, and offshore Browse Basin and onshore North Perth Basin in Western Australia. The examples demonstrate the validity of geomechanical assessments conducted at early field life that are verified with several years of production later.

About the Speaker

Dr. Abbas Khaksar is a global Geomechanics advisor and subject matter expert in sanding evaluation with Baker Hughes, based in Perth.  Abbas has 29 years of work experiences and before joining Baker Hughes in 2009 worked for Helix-RDS (2005-09), Geomechanics International (GMI, 2000-05), University of Adelaide (1998-2000) and Iran Geological Survey (1989-92). He holds PhD in Rock Physics (1999), MSc in Petroleum Geophysics (1994) and BSc in Mining Engineering (1989). He served the WA section of SPE as a board member and continuing education officer from 2012 to 2019. Abbas was a SPE Distinguished Lecturer for 2019-2020 on “Use of Geomechanics for sanding prediction and sand management”.
