SPE WA GAIA Sustainability Energy Series

August 17, 2023 @ 4:45 am - 7:30 pm

$40.00 – $60.00

SPE WA GAIA Sustainable Energy Series. Dive into the Future of Energy with Two Captivating Presentations.

Energy Literacy for the Energy Transition

Energy is one of the hot button topics of the day. Our news feeds are filled with energy-related stories, often liberally sprinkled with terms like firming, storage, intermittency and capacity factor, as well as the basic terms “power” and “energy” – which sadly are often confused. Intermingled with the jargon is a plethora of units and acronyms: kW, kWh, PJ, eV, EV, LNG, BESS and FESS and hundreds more. Without delving too far into the physics, Nick’s talk will provide some clarity around the basic concepts of energy and power, and show several examples to help sense check some of claims and counter claims that are made in this politically contentious field.

Speaker – Nick Last

Nick Last is a petroleum engineer and co-founder of the consultancy Well Test Knowledge International (WTKI). He has consulted for numerous operators in the APAC region, specialising in the evaluation of wells and reservoirs. His interest in broader energy matters was sparked during a road trip through WA a few years ago, which by chance passed by the Emu Downs wind and solar farms. Despite working for decades in the energy industry, he suddenly realised that he didn’t really understand the nature of the power they produced, or how they fitted into our energy system. Since then he’s devoted considerable time to rectifying that knowledge deficit. Nick has a BSc. In Physics from Imperial College, London, and he currently serves on the SPE WA Gaia sub-committee.

Australia’s Energy Transition: Risks and Opportunities

The energy transition is well underway in Australia, driven by our commitment to reduce emissions under the Paris Agreement and also rising pressure from banks and investors for companies to play their part in helping decarbonize our economy in a swift and orderly manner. With the physical impacts of climate change becoming increasingly apparent in Australia and globally, there is a pressing need to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. Leveraging Rystad Energy’s data and analysis on the Australian and global energy markets, Sally will outline where we are in the transition process and the challenges and opportunities this poses for our energy industry.

Speaker – Sally Bogle

Sally Bogle is a Senior Editor with Rystad Energy’s Analytics team with a primary focus on the APAC region. Sally has longstanding experience as an energy journalist, copywriter, researcher and editor specializing in gas & LNG, renewables, climate risk disclosure, electrification and energy transition technologies. Prior to joining Rystad Energy, she worked as a writer and researcher for a range of private and public sector organizations globally, including Accenture, IHS Markit (CERA Global Insight), the International Energy Agency, RSM, L.E.K., Futureproof Consulting, Monash University, and Endeavour Mining. She has also written as a journalist for FT Energy, S&P Global Platts, Petroleum Economist, Guardian Australia, lnterfax Global Energy Service, Schwartz Media and others.
