Automated Production and Reservoir Surveillance Systems: Why is it that with all of the technology at our disposal, the oil and gas sector is still decades behind the process industry?  Is there something about the oil patch that prevents technology from being properly deployed and utilised to make better decisions?

How does a company spend $40 Billion on $10 Billion of Oil and Gas?  How does a company let a 10,000 STB/d well’s completion fail?  How does ‘going to the cloud’ produce more oil and gas from a reservoir?  How does new technology (A.I., Smart wells etc.) change the way  management makes decisions?

Is it the technology…or is it us? (Spoiler Alert: It’s Us!)

Chris will share several case studies from his experience across the globe showing how Automated Production and Reservoir Engineering Surveillance technology has been used to detect and diagnose problems that otherwise went unnoticed. He will also demonstrate how the democratisation of information can change the way decisions are made (for the better!) and how taking a holistic approach to the wellbore-completion-reservoir system can avoid myopic mistakes.

Chris Fair received his BS in Chemical Engineering (1994) and his MS in Petroleum Engineering (1997) from the University of Houston. While studying, he worked in various positions in the chemical and oil industries. These roles included process operations, project/design engineering, PVT and fluid mechanics research, sales engineering, process control and instrumentation, downhole nuclear tool testing, and laboratory instruction in process control. In 1997, he joined Data Retrieval Corporation where he worked on expanding the range & types of wells that could be effectively tested from the surface, and worked on increasing the company’s markets, both in the US and overseas. In 2005, he started Oilfield Data Services, a reservoir/production engineering consulting firm that specializes in Automated Reservoir and Production Engineering Surveillance.  Outside of his “day-job”, Chris sings with the Houston Symphony Chorus.
